Ranmyaku yawned as the sun became no more than a crimson streak staining the sky , hidden behind the cover of the clouds. She blinked, watching it set. Her wings stretched and she sighed. Her right paw dangled below her as she laid in the tree. She had a habit of hanging around in trees, like her mother, no matter how much she may hate admitting it. She didn't like her weak, insignificant mother. It made her feel . . . Pathetic. Stretching out her back and wings, she hopped down from the branch onto the forest floor, or rather, glided down to the forest floor. She sensed a presence nearby, a strange presence, one that she couldn't explain, for she couldn't see this . . . Presence.

He slept, curled around the base of a great maple tree. He slept, and dreamed of nightmares.

Visions of loneliness, of confusion, of abject despair and shameful torture - every low and fearful thought that ulaya had ever dreamed up seemed to be there. But the god of fear would never fall prey to their seductive call. Kuragari played with them like the youthful kit he had never really been, baiting and teasing and dashing away again. This was the one time he could be free - except for the memories that came with those dreams. Their faces haunted his vision, and their names waited just on the edge of hearing.

Amirakaransarahailanakyojoseika...

Kuragari's eyes snapped open. Had that been a noise? Not a muscle moved, except for the silver-streaked ears that swiveled, listening carefully.

Ranmyaku's ears flicked as she heard a faint rustle in the bushes. It was very faint and extremely short, to such an extreme that it wouldn't be bothersome to your average, normal Ulaya.

But Ranmyaku wasn't your average, normal Ulaya . . .

She was hollow, quiet, mysterious, stoic, and preferred to distance herself from the world. And being the way she was, she was very cynical and . . . Not timid . . . Just paranoid.

Pivoting on her paws, she wheeled around, facing the bush. Her wings were folded tightly against her sides, her claws already extended. She approached the bush and peered through it, seeing a black male Ulaya with long silver hair, wings and horns of bone, chains and cuffs around his ankles, a skull forehead gem, and blood red eyes.

Curious, she stepped out in the open, her claws still extended. She was ready for anything and everything, being so untrustworthy.

There. His paw snaked out, raking cruelly across the back of the mouse that had been rooting around in the soft loam there. Incautious of it to venture so close, indeed. Before it had a chance to cry aloud in its pain, Kuragari opened himself to the creature's agony and fear, draining it away in a flash. The creature shuddered once, and died without a sound.

He was just about to sink his fangs into its warm flesh - even a god could not live on fear alone - when he became suddenly aware of the presence of something else. Something larger than a mouse, but still far smaller than him. He turned just as the kit stepped out of the brush.

Her claws were extended, and the serious expression on her face belonged on a much older ulaya. "Well, what have we here?" The god's low voice held the barest hint of a purr, and the chains on his skeletal wings swayed gently as the aged ivory stirred, testing.

8D *Shotmauled>

Ranmyaku's orange eyes with swirls of red stared at the black ulaya with a bit of a glare. A pointy fang poked of her mouth and the kit quickly glanced at his skeletal wings. Fixing her gaze back on his blood red eyes, she let out a bit of a growl. "Does it matter? Just another kit . . ."

One brow raised curiously at the kit's indifferent response. With her fearsome appearance, or at least so far as others accounted such things, and her sharp claws and teeth obviously at the ready, Kuragari had expected a more passionate reply than that. "Just another kit," he agreed lazily, turning back to his meal. As if already unaware that the kit was still there, he ripped off a mouthful of the juicy meat. It was not as satisfying as the other hunt, the one that was his sole purpose in life, but still good.

A few moments drifted by, moments that seemed longer to Ran as she watched the male in front of her devour his meal. She let out a sigh through her nose, relaxing her muscles and straightening herself out. It didn't seem like this male had any intentions to hurt her.

But for some reason, his scent was strangely familiar. It was vague but she knew she had smelled it before. As if it came with the wind, stopped for a moment and then disappeared again.

She couldn't put her paw on it. All she could remember was that her mother had come home that night so long ago. "Do you know any female Ulaya by the name of Seika?" She asked, her stoic, empty voice remaining. A voice that shouldn't have belonged to a young kit. "One that might have a flaming orange pelt and eyes like mine?"

He kept one ear casually flicked in her direction as he ate in case she should try anything despite her words, but the kit still didn't speak. But then, just as Kuragari was about to finish the mouse off, she finally did so - and he instantly froze. Red eyes flicked up faster than thought to meet her orange ones, their slit pupils flashing dangerously in the darkness.

Seika... He knew that name like he knew his own. That was from before everything had changed, before... "What would you know of it, kit?" He was almost surprised to find that the words were deceptively cool and even, matching her hollow tone. She smelled like death, like he did, but even so how had he missed that nearly-familiar scent wound in with it?

Ranmyaku observed him for a moment. She pierced his eyes that would have struck fear into the hearts of most others with her own, attempting to search their depths. Ran could not read minds; most Ulaya couldn't. But she was pretty good at looking beyond what was outside.

The memory came back to her, the memory of that night.

Her father in all of his glory was sleeping in the back of the den, his paws folded around his scythe and his wings draped down on his sides. Her sister, Naal'ynth was sleeping in a different corner of the den, her white pelt reflecting the moonlight that found its way through the entrance and inside.

Ranmyaku herself wasn't asleep. Far from it. She found it hard to sleep at night. She was zoned out, random thoughts running through her head.

Her mother came into the den. At what time Ran couldn't determine. Nor did she care. She just remember the pale, shocked expression on her mother's face, her orange and red swirled eyes struck with fear. She was trembling as she entered the den, trying to be as quiet as possible as to not wake her sleeping family. She was breathing heavily and its rhythm was off. She was violently shaking as she settled down near the entrance, curling up tightly. The only word that she uttered several times was, "Kuragari . . ."

Kuragari . . . Ranmyaku closed her eyes for a moment. "Kuragari . . ." She spoke the word out loud. "That's your name isn't it?" Her eyes opened still lacking any expression at all. "And to answer your question, Seika is my mother."

He closed his eyes for a moment, the god's breath hissing softly in the sudden silence. When he opened them again, they were hard and cold, sharp as bloody rubies. "Is that so?" Kuragari breathed, claws unconsciously sliding back out to dig into the ground. The mouse lay forgotten by one paw.

What did she know? That emotionless gaze seemed to hold far more than it should. Lying here, with that familiar scent in the air and those eyes so cold studying him, brought all the confusion and torment of those lonely days back into his mind. He hated it. He hated her, for doing this to him. Surprised at the sudden intensity of it, Kuragari shoved the unwanted emotions back down, regaining his composure with momentary difficulty. "No," he lied evenly. "I can't recall meeting anyone by that name."

Ran shrugged and rolled her eyes. Stupid, arrogant god . . . How retarded did he consider her? Her mother was typically one to shrug most things off. To come back home scared like that could only be done by the God of Fear. And who was she talking to? Insolent Ulaya . . . . . But Ran wasn't one to argue over trivial matters. If things crossed the line, then she'd voice her opinion. "Whatever." She replied, folding her red and black wings by her side. She flipped the hair out of her eyes and sighed. "I'll have you know, lying doesn't work on all Ulaya . . ."

He narrowed his eyes menacingly as the red and black kit rolled hers, compelling slit-pupils boring into hers for an instant, then licked the dried blood off of one of his claws, considering. She was certainly bold for her age, but he wouldn't take a flippant response like that from anyone, and certainly not some mere kitling like this. It would be a shame to have to teach a kit of that female the same lesson her mother had learned...

Still, Kuragari had to admit at least to himself that she was right. He didn't really know why he had said that - the words had just appeared on his tongue. A petty little denial of the truth in a moment of weakness, how very mortal. His eyes narrowed in self-disgust.

"So she spoke of it to her kits?" he abruptly continued, as she had never spoken. The god's mouth curled up, though there was no humor in it. "I would not have expected that." He had been little more than a kit himself at the time; was it really so short a time ago that her children would be so young? In some ways it was easier not to dwell on anything from that period.

Ranmyaku let out a hollow chuckle, which sounded more like a sigh. "Of course she wouldn't talk about it with us. I just don't sleep often so I pick these sorts of things up when she's sauntering into the den at the dead of night when my father and sister are asleep." She shrugged, stretching her wings. Her posture straightened out ever so slightly and she folded her little wings back in place. "What did you do to Seika, anyway?" She asked out of curiosity.
