This may sound silly but I honestly don't know the difference!
When Rem said he/she had feelings for Misa I assumed he/she was a he.
Same as when L was first able to see Rem since in the anime L called Rem a "White monster" and then Matsuda said "Ryuuzaki it's rude to call him that!"
But when Rem killed L and they noticed their death god was missing, they were all shouting "Were'd she go?"
Somebody help me out here I don't know! sweatdrop

Rems a girl, i think she might of said this herself but im not to sure but in HTR13 it says shes a girl

there are stages in the manga where Rem says that (it) is a girl. there is no where that says that she is a guy....

Kinda looks and sounds like a girl
BUT Rem falls in love with misa...making it seems like a boy
BUT
then again its known that Segimani dont really HAVE a gender.... i'm sure they said that in one episode
but I guess in manga 13 they say a girl...? which I still have yet to see in my local book store x.x

Like everyone already pointed out: yep, Rem's a girl alright. But then again, shinigamis don't reproduce so they wouldn't really need a specific gender. My theory is that shinigamis are like digimons x_x they don't really have a specific gender but there are some who look and act like females, and so are considered females (by others and themselves).

uh no... hermaphrodites have both genders in one body not none... rem is simply a girl, who only cares about misa. or in love w/e. it's true that shinigamis do not reproduce, because they don't need to. but it's already been specified that each shinigami has a separate gender. sweatdrop
