blackcloudsonsundays What is the difference? Which has a better punk/metal/hard rock sound? h Depending on the exact sound you want. Basicaly play diferent guitars with both specs and find what gives you the sound you want and what gives you more then what you need.

Do you mean single coil or humbucker, or like what position your switch should be in. I have a 2 humbucker setup with a 5 way switch, so the config. is humbucker bridge, single bridge, 2 humbucker, single neck, humbucker neck. The bridge pickup will always be more twangy, or crunchy if you are using a lot of gain, I use a single coil position for my clean tones, and neck pickups for more warm fuzzy tones. You just gotta experiment. I think a lot of punk and metal will use a lot of the bridge pickup more than anything else.

Most punk guitarist I know use the neck pickup because it gives you a thicker, more full tone that goes better with the grinding tone, and the bass of the drums. Metal guitar... eh, it kind of depends. Most older Metal, Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc... would use the neck pickup, but all the 80's metal guitarist desired a brighter tone to accent their leads, so that was mostly played with a bridge pickup, and live pickups. (EMG, Duncans, etc...) It really depends more on the song that you're playing. It's not that hard to figure out which pickup you should be using to get the right sound, just play a few notes, and pick whichever sounds right to you. Just remember the more pickups you have though, the more tones you can get. So 3>2>1, unless you're going for that jazzy single coil tone, then nothing beats a Tele.

Gazlowe the number of pickups doesnt change the sound they produce. FAIL... who said that it did? If you're talking about my post, I didn't say that the number of pickups changes the sound. But if you have more pickups, you have more tone options between them. I.E. Bridge pickup sounds different then the neck pickup. (Ditto with the body on triple pick up guitars.)

(Ditto with the body on triple pick up guitars.) the original post duh. he asks specifically if one or two pickups would make a better punk/whatever sound. its almost as if hes asking about humbuckers vs single coils.

Basically, the bridge pickup is usually high output, perfect for shredders, punk/metal/hard rock.
Of course, EMG's or some Dimarzios would help.
I myself have 3 pickups, I use the bridge for rythme and such while I use
the neck for leads.

I find that using the maximum number of pickups works best for chords, particularly with distortion. Just comes across as a cleaner, heavier sound when you're adding all that distorted feeling to it. I usually use the two double pickups on my 7-string simultaneously.
But play it by ear. If the song sounds like it needs something different, then it may well need that.

my old guitar had 3 single coils, and my new guitar has 2 humbuckers. i have to say that the 2 humbuckers sound WAY nicer. they sustain and they just give you a better sound overall. i play all kinds of rock, and the 2 humbuckers work better for both. now, as to which pickups you use (bridge, neck, etc...), thats up to you.
