First of all, I'd just like to say hi.. : D I'm new to the guild, so thanks to whoever it was that accepted me. ^^ Umm. I'll make an introduction later. 8D;;
Anyway. My topic of the day is: Are you disappointed in or with Den of Angels? Here lately, they've been VERY strict with what is on or off topic -- banning dolls because they don't 'look' Asian, considering banning anthros for no apparent reason, etc... I feel they're just getting way to strict about everything. It's seeming less and less like a community, and more and more like a city with a government. :/
Your thoughts?

Their forum, their rules ^^)
Though the consideration in anthro bannage got a bit overboard and made me sad, since I have one myself ;w; *pets the Baha*

Hey Zomlette ^___^ I don't think they're too strict at all. I think they're strict about thread, incase their server overloads? o___o;; Like my welcome threads still there after like a year of joining XD In my forum where I mod at, we prune our forum nearly every 3 months to save space lol.

^ DoA got a ton of extra server space recently, so old-old threads probably aren't as much a concern at the moment. :v and sometimes people need to keep their old threads for reference- although keeping intro ones doesn't seem necessary, like you said! hm.
DoA is mostly about convenience for me- it's the biggest english-language doll forum, easiest place to start meetups through, most informative, etc. and i actually don't mind their current bannination of certain dolls/companies(GOODREAU), since it keeps some of the fugly (GOODREAU) away from the boards. but if they ever do start banning decent ones (like bahas, as Marubelles said) i'd start to reconsider stayng there.

I'm not really disappointed in Den of Angels.
Some of the anthros they banned makes sense. Like that one dog with the tongue sticking out. @_@ I thought that looked verging on frightening... but that's me...
Their forum their rules anyhow. I don't feel inclined about a great resource for info that I get for free.

Some things get on my nerves sometimes. Like the generic response youget when your thread is locked or something.... other than that, I love DoA ^_^

Honestly they are not 100% banning the dolls. Like everything else, they can still appear in the gallery so long they are accompanied by a doll that is allowed. You can still use these dolls as props in your photostories. I don't think that should be unallowed. It's like using a plushie animal as prop.
The thing they don't want are threads/galleries specifically focusing on said banned dolls. (unless the dolls are copies/pirated then it's absolute 100% no no no reason no way no how) Such threads will steal bandwidth away from what the forum wishes to focus on : humanoid asian made bjd/anthro dolls.
And please don't forget. It is a public forum. Like Gaia. You didn't pay tax to be in it. You don't even have to be in it. And it belongs to a member. Yes, it belongs to a member. it does not really belong to a whole platoon of people.
The mods are always pointing out that out of topic stuff can be posted elsewhere like LJ, and there is a HUGE doll community on LJ, most of whom you can find listed in the "What's Your LJ Name?" thread somewhere in the forum. Make friends with them, post them. Many post stuff about their dolls there that they never even mention on the forum, be it allowed dolls or banned. Like me. I hardly have a gallery post in DoA, but I take lots of photos and post them in my LJ.
So the thing is, don't be disappointed in DoA. If it's a school that teaches japanese, why are you annoyed they refuse to teach you the kansai dialogue as well just because you think it is cool?
There's a place for everything and DoA just decides that animal dolls/non asian bjds are best not placed there.

I'd say it isn't so much the rules that are bad. I mean they are pretty air-tight on not allowing any bitching. But that's just it, you can barley get away with constructive crits there *it depends who's modding* I've seen threads locked for some pretty shitty reasons, but it is their forum. That's why we have DoD.
But for being the biggest online engilsh doll-community, I think it sucks that you can't discuss all Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls there. Forgive me but I think the whole ban-anthro/less articulate BJD's thing it bullshit. Yeah there's LJ and others, but it's alot less convinent. DoA is really resourceful, but I never post there. I appreciate the moderation that other places clearly lack, but I don't like the mass amount of restictions they put up.

Nah, I find it a little hard to be disappointed with them, actually. Besides, the anthro dolls that are allowed have their own forum nowadays.
The only problems I've ever had with them were their members who can sometimes come off as a little too imposing on what people should and shouldn't do while there.

I'm not disappointed by DoA... but I've stopped trying to be part of the community there. It's just too big. Unless your doll is popular, any gallery post you make sinks to the 2nd ord 3rd page without comments. Replies in the general discussion forum get buried as well.
The only perk about having such a big, central doll forum is the marketplace. I've bought at least half my dolls second or third hand from the DoA marketplace. biggrin

I would like to argue to common 'well it's their forum' No, it is NOT. It is their server, but it's the people who make a forum.
Also, as for bandwidth, Aimee is getting $600 a month per banner ad. So I really don't think they're hurting for server costs.

I am really supportive of them making the anthro dolls off topic. It's really getting crazy how many companies are jumping the anthro bandwagon, and a lot of times they are not as high quality as other dolls in the hobby.
Besides it's not like DoA is the only bjd forum. I don't see why people are freaking out when they just want to narrow the focus a bit. (the forum is so massive as it is, it's all well that they want to narrow the content)

Elle Hazard It's really getting crazy how many companies are jumping the anthro bandwagon, and a lot of times they are not as high quality as other dolls in the hobby. Could you define this? How are they not as high quality? Materials? Shoddy seam lines? Bad pigment? Casting flaws? If by 'not as high quality' you instead mean 'I don't like how they look' that's fine, there are plenty of BJDs I don't find appealing or find downright hideous, but they're they're generally made of nearly the same materials.
