Shani was keeping her mind occupied now that her mother had gone for the day and she could only seem to think about how Ghali had said she was moving out of the den. She didn't like keeping secrets from her parents, but she'd promised her sister and she knew it would only upset her mom and dad. That was the only thing that kept her from blurting it out, really- she didn't want to disappoint anyone, Ghali included. To keep herself busy and to improve upon something she knew would make her mother happy, Shani had decided to try hunting. Aiming only for fun (and practice), Shani had headed for the water hole to see what she could find there to sneak up on. It was a little harder to stay hidden while she worked on her own, she had to keep reminding herself to stay low and to keep her tail still. To her, it seemed very likely that if anything was going to give her away, it would be that restless tail!

Indaba had fallen asleep by the waterhole again, clean and content. What better way to dry off than by sleeping in the sun? His mane was still slightly damp when he woke, a feeling he'd never been horribly fond of. He heaved himself to his feet with a sigh and tried to shake some of the damp away - it didn't really work, but it was a little better. Maybe. After another shake for good measure, he set to stretching the sleep from his limbs.

Shani spotted the lion resting by the waterhole through the grass, and decided that while a sleeping target wasn't ideal since they were not full awake and aware of their surroundings, it would still encourage her to keep quiet so they didn't wake up. So Indaba became her 'prey' - though the decision was made just as he woke up, and she stumbled to a stop in the grass when she realized he was moving. She wasn't sure if she'd been noticed or not, but she figured she could keep trying.
Watching him shake off, she started inching closer again.

Fortunately for the 'hunter,' Indaba was quite oblivious to her presence. After his stretch, he began to groom, paying particular attention to his mane and tail. They tended to fluff out after baths (and rain, for that matter), and his shaking certainly hadn't helped matters. Though he wasn't really a vain creature, he didn't want to look silly, either.

It was surprising, especially for the poorly practiced brown lioness, that this little venture was working. But she contained herself, getting excited would make things worse, not better. She really wanted to improve, not just seem to and then blow it. She managed to get a fair bit closer, but when she stopped again she noticed his somewhat fluffed up mane and his attempted to fix it. She did her best to bite back a laugh, but already giddy from her success thus far, it was hard.
No matter, she decided. Any closer and it might be a bit dangerous to pop up on someone so much bigger than her, really. Smiling, she poked her head out of the grass.
"Hello," she called.

Startled by the voice that popped up seemingly right beside him, Indaba jumped. Wha- whe-?!!
...oh. There. Spying the brown lioness, he not only relaxed, but sagged a little, ears falling back. How embarassing! He would have blushed, if it were possible for a lion to do such things. "H-Hello. Didn't, um...didn't see you there."

The surprised reaction was exactly why Shani had decided on a safe distance, though it didn't look much like it would have been dangerous to be any closer. That decided, she stepped through the grass to be a bit closer for conversation, or at least a polite explanation of why she was popping up out of no where like that. She smiled.
"Sorry, I was practicing my hunting so you weren't supposed to see me," she explained apologetically.

"Oh." That made sense! He felt a little better about being surprised, since that had, apparently, been the point. His posture straightened again, and altogether he looked much happier when he smiled. He was still a bit embarassed, but he'd get over it. "That's alright, then."
"I'm Indaba, by the way."

It was lucky that she found someone so understanding! It wasn't like there were many mean lions in the Pridelands, but some might not be so cheery when interrupted unexpectedly like that. Especially so soon after waking up or while in the midst of grooming. Someone who even introduced themselves first. "I'm Shani," she replied cheerfully, standing up properly and walking out of the grass, "It's nice to meet you, Indaba. Do you nap by the waterhole often?"

"Hello, Shani." Indaba's smile strengthened, and he settled into a sit again. "After a bath, usually. I fall asleep while I'm drying, since it takes so long. How about you? Scare unfortunate strangers much?" He chuckled.

"Ah," she said with a smile, and almost jumped when the question was turned back on her. At least it was a fair question, and also laughed. "No," she admitted, "You're the first, actually. I'm sorry for scaring you, I didn't know you were going to wake up--"
Well, that wasn't going to make her look any better.
"I mean," she stammered, "I wasn't going to wake you up, I was trying not to since you have to be quiet for hunting."

Indaba gave a good-natured laugh, following Shani's embarrassment. "Maybe what you need is some lessons?"

Shani smiled sheepishly at his suggestion, glad that he was at least being kind about the whole situation. Not that she'd ever really run into anyone who was bad or discouraging in her life, but the idea that it could happen kept her on her toes almost all the time.
"My mother has been teaching me," she said, "I'm practicing, I want to show her how well I can do it." That one sentence described more about Shani than she or anyone outside of her immediate family knew.

"Has she? You probably don't need my help, then," Indaba chuckled, although a hint of sadness found its way into his eyes. His mother...hadn't had a chance to teach him anything. "I'm alright, but certainly not as good as a lioness."

"Oh, no! I can use whatever help I can get," she said immediately, not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings and mistaking the sad waver in his expression. However, what she said was also true. There was only the one task, certainly, but different techniques would have different values and uses- and she might something that helped her perfect her attempts.
