It was very early twilight, and the sun had barely begun to descend down the horizon. Maiya was looking around the area, observing possible scenes to paint while waiting for the sun to really start to set and had turned the sky a pretty gold. It would still be a couple of hours before that happened though.

For the moment Maiya sat upon the beach, the waves several feet away from her. Seagulls cawed as they flew about, occasionally swooping down and nabbing a bit of food. There was a gentle wind that blew by, carrying the scent of the ocean along with it. The golden namir stretched a little, slightly stiff from remaining in one position for almost half an hour, and resumed her watch.

Schokolade wandered along the coastline, eyeing the sand for shells or sand dollars or bits of seaglass. He had built up quite a collection in the little bag slung around his neck. Now that the sun was beginning to set, he felt much safer going outside. Direct sunlight did odd things to his coat, as he had learned the hard way.

There! A little bit of blue glass! He nipped it up in his mouth and deposited it in the bag, pleased to have found a rarer color. He continued onward, careful not to dip his feet in the surf, as water was also somewhat dangerous.

It wasn't long before the brown and black namir came within her range of vision that Maiya noticed him. She watched as he wandered along, stopping every so often to do something, and continued along his way. She passively observed him as he drew closer and closer, not saying a word yet planning on saying hello if he noticed her.

Schokolade continued on, watching the ground. He was collecting quite a cache that day! He smiled to himself, and looked up to relieve his stiff neck. Oh? There was a gold namir a little ways off into the distance...she seemed to be looking in his direction. Schokolade looked behind him. No, she wasn't looking at someone else...it was him her eyes were on. He moved closer to her. "Hello...do I know you?" He didn;t think he did, but asked just to make sure.

Maiya smiled warmly when he spoke her, and replied, "Hello. No, I don't recall ever seeing you here before." She spied the bag around his neck and her curiousity stirred. Maybe he was collecting things.... "I'm Maiya. What's your name?" She was curious about what was in the bag, but introductions were deemed important in her mind.

Schokolade smiled and dipped his head in a little bow. "I am Schokolade." His voice had a faint accent, and he pronounced the words oddly. He could see her eyes on his bag. "I was collecting shells and seaglass. Would you like to see?" He spilled a few samples onto the white sand in front of Maiya, the bright greens and blues and browns and reds of the seaglass winking up at her in the dying sunlight.

Watching the namir pour some of the bag's contents unto the sand with interest, Maiya's attention was immediately grabbed by the seaglass. "Whoa...those are pretty!" she exclaimed. The sunlight not only reflected up at her making the shards shine brightly, but also passed through them to dye the sand. "Collecting things seems fun. I don't currently do it myself though."

Schokolade watched Maiya's reaction. She seemed to be pretty impressed with the brightly colored bits. "Broken glass falls into the ocean and is tumbled smooth until its like a frosty jewel. Seaglass is the only good byproduct of pollution." He gave a tiny smile at this last comment. He was far from an environmentalist, but...he sighed inwardly. She would probably think he was really strange now. He gathered up all the glass and returned it to the bag, save for the blue shard he had found earlier. With a heavy exhale, he passed it to Maiya. "Here. This is a pretty rare color. Most are white or green or brown." He didn't know when he would find another blue bit, but he was sure he would find one someday.

Maiya listened to the lesson with interest. She didn't know that there was a good by-product of pollution. It was nice to learn something new, especially when it involved something as pretty as seaglass. She was about to comment on how interesting that bit of information was when he put all the glass away except for a blue shard which he handed to her. She was surprised by this, and for a moment she could only stare at it. "Wow...are you sure you want to give it to me? I mean, you said it was rare and all..." she trailed off, unable to find the words to finish her sentence.

(Though technically she could get away with just saying that. xd )

Schokolade shook his head. "No...you can have it. It'll be a good start to your collection." He paused a moment, then hurriedly put in: "Not that I expect you to suddenly go out of your way to collect seaglass or anything, but..." He too trailed off, suddenly embarrassed. He was being presumptuous...he had only just met this little golden girl. He looked away, and saw that the sky was beginning to turn that peculiar shade of purple-pink that he loved. He smiled again, feeling his frustration melt off. Sunset was his favorite time of day...

Maiya accepted the blue shard with a smile, though it was rather unexpected from a stranger. She made a mental note to start herself a collection of seaglass as well. It would be rather a shame if she hadn't, she thought. "Thank you." When Schokolade turned toward the sky she did likewise. "Purple already," she softly stated, "won't be too long now until the sky is gold..."

"Bitte," replied Schokolade with a gentle incline of his head. "You are welcome." He turned back to watch the sky, seeing the beauty of the colors reflected in the water. It was lovely, like an entire sea of brush-strokes from a master painter. He sighed with happiness and sank into the sand. He watched the sky begin to change to gold. "Ah, you were right..." He glanced over at Maiya and smiled. "Same color as you, if you don;t mind me saying."

"I don't mind at all," replied Maiya, laying down upon the sand as well. She watched the sky intently, mentally recording images that pass within her field of vision for use in her painting. As she watched, Maiya said, "I got my fur mostly from my father, who got it from his mother. Although not everyone says that I'm gold: I've been called marmalade before too," she added with a small laugh, remembering her meeting with Corsola. She thought to ask if he had family, but figured that it may be rude as not every namir in Namiah has one.

"Marmalade, huh?" He observed her quietly. "Yes, I do suppose that is an accurate description." He looked back at the sunset, watching as the sky began to shift slowly to red. "Red sky at night..." he muttered softly, thinking of an old poem he had heard somewhere before. He angled his head slightly toward Maiya, and wondered if she knew the rest.

Maiya looked at Schokolade when he said that phrase. She had heard it before somewhere. She looked off a bit to the upper right, her typical recall pose, and then the reference hit. "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailor's warning." She looked back at him, her recall mode over, and asked, "Is that it?"

(To be honest, I looked it up. xd I had heard it before though. biggrin )
