"What a nice day." Deet said plainly, wearing his store's apron as he carried another box of books up from the first floor to the second. Once a book got too old, or if a book was worth a lot (in one way or another), Deet put it up on the second floor of the shop. The first floor was reserved for the average, boring novels and stuff. Luckily, Deet had managed to make it so they only sold books: Not a single magazine in sight! He took great pride in that, really.
"Uh-huh!" Nihilo agreed, the snake boy carrying a much smaller box filled with children's books up the stares as well. He really wasn't helping much, but helping in the shop really was a good bonding thing for the two of them. Besides, it kept him out of trouble and away for the TV. That had to be good parenting.
Deet put the last box down, and watched as his son carefully put his box on top. "Heh heh, good job." Deet said, patting his son on the head affectionately, before picking him up and carrying him down the stairs, mostly just to show off.

It was one of those nice not-quite-spring days that showed an uncharacteristic warmth and sunshine that most anyone couldn't resist going out to, leaving behind the cooped-up nature of home. Winter was ending, and it was nice to get a fresh breath of air before the spring and the pollen hit in full force. With it being one of those days, and with his brother Iyachtu having destroyed another one of his favorite books, Flitch needed no urgings from anyone to go out for a bit. He was going to get that book replaced, and damn it, he was going to put a high lock on his room. Iyachtu was too destructive for his own good.
Book store, book store... Briefly Flitch thought of visiting the family friend Niiran's book store, but he dismissed it. He simply wasn't in the mood to see the feline. Maybe find someplace new, meet someone new. His social circle felt so constrained as of late. Might as well go poking around.
Fortunately, it didn't take him long to find a book shop. Seemed cozy enough. He pushed his way in, looking around curiously. Didn't take him long to spot (what looked to be) the owner, accompanied by... aww, how cute!

Deet put his kid back on the floor, smiling up at his (very short) new customer. He looked like the average customer of a book store, which was nice from the average Gaian who looked like some sort of all-black thing vomited on them. "Welcome to the Cat's Eye Bookstore. How can I help ya?" Deet asked pleasantly.
Nihilo smiled to the customer as well, though kept quiet and slightly behind his father. Apparently his change made him just a little less social than he was as a baby.

Flitch returned the smile, nodding. "Actually, I'm looking for a specific book. Do you have Le Morte D'Arthur? My little brother shredded it last night..."
Noting that Nihilo was peeping out shyly from behind the cat-man's legs, Flitch gave him a friendly waggle of his webbed fingers. "Hey there. What's your name?"

"Le Morte D'Arthur? Oh, yeah, you're in luck," Deet added, even though he said that to just about every customer, "We have a few copies. Hard-cover alright or do you prefer paper-back?" Deet asked, heading to the cash-register and pulling out his old-fashioned stock book. He owned a computer, yes, but apart from buying stuff and solitaire, he had no idea how to use it. The entire stock of the store was kept in the large, barbaric-looking book.
Nihilo's face brightened as he saw the webbed fingers of the teenager. "I-Its Nihilo." the boy said, introducing himself to the elder Sin'Aeis.

"Hardcover would probably be better," Flitch mused. "I need all the durability I can get with the books in my house."
Letting the shop owner sort through his book, Flitch knelt down so that he was almost eye-level with Nihilo. "Nihilo, huh? I'm Flitch."

"I like your hands!" the scaley boy said happily. Kind of direct-to-the-point, but hey, in his own way it was a compliment!
"Hardcover...Hardcover...Got it!" Deet said, tapping his finger twice on the book, walking over to a book-shelf and pulling out a copy. Ah, freshly printed, perfect binding still in tact. Deet was openly a hopeless bibliophile.

"Aww, thank you," Flitch responded sweetly, humoring the toddler. "I like your hair. It's very green. My favorite color."
Hm. "Hey Nihilo. Wanna see a neat trick?" And with that he did the oldest trick that had never once failed to amuse a small child- he wiggled his ears. Simple enogh, but had yet to fail to amuse a little kid.

"Wow! Cool! My dad can do that, too!" Nihilo said, wearing a large smile now. He liked this Flitch guy, he was cool. There was also this air of familiarity that made Nihilo feel just a wee bit easy.
Deet smiling, watching from the safety of the cash register. He trusted this Flitch kid. At the very least he knew he had solid taste in books.

Flitch grinned before straightening, brightening as he saw that the owner had pulled out the book for him. "Oh Thanks!"

"No problem." Deet said, happy to be of service to his customer, though he kept the book out of reach, "Just make sure your little brother doesn't trash this one." The large cat man said, honestly concerned for the books well being. A bit odd, yes, but in a way he was just saving the poor boy some money.
"Dad! Flitch can do funny things with his ears too!" Nihilo said excitedly.

Flitch nodded patiently at the lecture. "Don't worry. My door's getting a high lock put in as soon as I get back." A little funny, hearing the phrase 'high lock' coming from someone who just barely topped five feet, but it was taller than the raging toddler of death, at least.

"Oh, thats good, thats good." Deet nodded, finally handing over the book. He wasn't sure what destroyed the last copy...He said it was his little brother, but it sounded more like a dog. Yeah, dogs had no respect for books. Or nice shoes, for that matter, but thats another story entirely.
While his father had a deep inner discussion on why dogs suck, Nihilo was being much more social with the customer. "So, what book is that?" Nihilo asked, already forgetting the name of the novel. It had a really important name, though.

Flitch gratefully accepted the book with a thanks and a wad of hastily-grabbed money from his dresser. Now that his business was done, he looked down once again to the questioning Nihilo.
"It's a book about King Arthur," he explained, settling down on the ground once again. "He's a real famous legendary king. This book collects a lot of old stories about him." He cracked open the book, pleased to see that it was illustrated. "Wanna see some of the pictures?"

"Sure!" Nihilo said, clearly showing his excitement. He took a few steps forward, looking at the pictures of the heroic King Arthur. Nihilo was proud: he could even read some of the words under the picture! Deet had been teaching him how to read in their spare time.
