When I graduated from my high school, my mom couldn't afford to send me through college. Since she had to take care of my older brother who has multiple physical problems, I was on my own for money. I had to pick up a job to earn enough money, and since I'm old enough to claim myself as an independent, I'm qualified to apply for financial aids or grants. Now here's my next problem...which college is right for me? I know I'd like to major in graphic design and be an illustrator of sorts, but I don't drive, and don't know what colleges have the programs I need. I was hoping someone here who is more familiar with the area than me can recommend a place.

Any way I can talk you out of going to college for graphic arts?

While I would HIGHLY recommend against doing graphic design as right now you'll have a degree and still be flipping burgers.

If you want suggestions though, I can only recommend the two colleges I've been to.

Those being Lake Washington Technical College & Edmonds Community College.

LWTC if you're dead set on flipping burgers er...Graphic Design or any automotive career (Auto Body, Auto Repair, Diesel)...EdCC if you really want anything else or a transfer to a university.

Ok, so I realize I'm a little late with this topic, but I have a question. Why are you guys so hell-bent against a graphics design degree? Since I have no interest in that field nor do I know anyone in that field (closest I have is game design or animation). I was just curious.

Graphic design is one of the most heavily populated careers out there. Go to Craigslist, Myspace, Facebook and you'll bump into "graphic designers" all the time. There are so many people who try to go into art and graphic design, when the field of applicants is a mile long, your degree is useless.

The smart graphic designer knows ONLY connections get you jobs. A degree will not get you a good job as a graphic designer. The best you can hope for is some office job, dealing with faceless clients. And that's after months of job searching.

If you combine graphics design with other things, like business entrepreneurship, programming or social engineering, then the degree will be of some importance. As a stand alone degree, it's worthless.

You need connections. mad I have no degree in graphic design, I never went to college for it, I taught myself, and I've got connections to a few hosting services who deal with big clients.

Art is all about connections. mood and talent, not college.

I will say, though, that if your college teaches the PSYCHOLOGY of graphic design, then it might be worth it - even if your degree is worthless in the end.

eek Damn! I had no idea! Look, what I really want to do is draw comic books, but I don't know how to make a living out of it, and I thought maybe going to college might help me be a damn-good artist, if not help me develop some job skills. I thought the field of comics would fall under graphic design, but apparantly not. I just want to know what good colleges are out there that specialize in this field, and if there isn't, then I'm back to square one. Any ideas?

The lack of responses has led me to believe that no one has the answers to my questions, or at least not the ones I want to hear. Though I'd like to think that drawing is my specialty, maybe it's because it's my only specialty, and that I didn't have very good teachers growing up that got me interested in other subjects as well--like science, math, english--the works. So what I should probably ask, is--among my fellow washingtonian gaians--what college do you like and for what reason? Are the teachers nice? Is the program you're in fun? I understand that different colleges specialize in different things, but I'd like to hear what the students think. I'm probably going to get various responses, but I thought I'd at least try. If that makes any sense.
