...or in a whole line of them?

Was watching the episodes recently and was deeply struck by Zechs' explanation to Dekim Barton as to how he was back from "the dead":

Zechs: This is Preventer Wind.
Dekim: Zechs Merquise? I thought you were dead.
Zechs: That's right, I was; but I find that I cannot quietly sleep in my grave while Treize's spirit is still roaming among us.

On the face of it, this sounds like a declamation against Treize--but the more I think about it, the more I wonder. Suppose it's not so much that Zechs is returning from the grave to fight against Treize's love of war, as he is because his own martial spirit has been stirred up to fight on behalf of the Colonies *because* of Treize and the traditions he clearly inculcated into his young friend and protege. For instance, Treize's desire for honour in combat... the will of people to fight for what they believe in, to defend or attack for the best possible reasons... what if Zechs is saying he's back because that spirit, taught to him by Treize from a reasonably young age, made him realize he needed to come back (clearly after recovering from what happened when Epyon got caught in the backblast...) because there were people to protect and a war to be won?

What do you all think?

And yes, this has to do with the Une/Zechs friendship fanfic I'm writing for the challenge... *grins*

I like your thinking, but I'm afraid I disagree. It's in the tone of his words. He simply sounds more like a vengeful specter than a noble crusader. That he cannot "sleep quietly" because "Treize's spirit [Mariemaia] roams among [them]" is meant to make him sound like an archetypal ghost, the kind that returns from the grave to end "unfinished business": Hamlet's father or The Legend of Sleepy Hollow's Headless Horseman, for example. In this case Zechs is metaphorically kept from death because his unfinished task is to clean up the loose threads of the previous conflict--which means destroying the Mariemaia Army.

Hmm, that's different but not antithetical to my thoughts... I've had a lot of friends tell me they thought Zechs was being vengeful against Treize personally, and I just don't see that. They had their disagreements (often violently) after everything started coming apart, but I don't see a true hatred on either side. A lot of sorrow and pain, but not hatred. If he is kept from death, as you say, by a need to destroy the Mariemaia army, that actually dovetails pretty well with where I was going with it. smile

As for his tone, keep in mind that he is speaking to a man he despises, and one whose truly megalomanic behaviours is catapulting them all back into war--AND he is on the attack at the time, ready to take these folks out if he can. I think that would put a vengeful edge to his tone of voice in any case.

Good points though! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I see it as more he's back from the dead to put a stop to Mariemaias false army. I see the end of GundamWing as Treize created a war to discourage people to attempt to create war again. But, with the Army Mariemaia has it's force Treize to return to the battlefield after he'd earned his right to peace. I see Zechs is back to help free Treizes spirit so it can finialy rest in peace.

I'm in more agreement with NowhereManXP, but I do think his tone was more directed in anger at Dekim.

Not so much hatred for Treize as the concept of "War" that the man stood for--the "warrior spirit" and such. In this case that would encompass Mariemaia, Dekim, and every last one of their fighters. I see it as Zechs' spooky way of telling the other man: "I'm back, and I'm coming for all of you knuckleheads that tried to start this thing." He's very fond of using periphrasis and metaphor when speaking, so that's just like him.

Duuuude... serious kudos to you for using periphrasis in a post!! That rocks! smile

And I think you're right. It seems to be a "thing" for people who are either from Sanc or connected to it somehow: they all start speaking in wordy, luscious metaphors, and using not only periphrasis, but passive periphrastic voice as well! It's... kind of cool. smile
