I found this on Postsecret, which is a community art project where people make anonymous postcards of their secrets and mail them in. I've seen secrets similar to this before, but I've seen it all over the place, too. We all know that the anti-choice/anti-sex/abstinence-only crowd uses guilt and shame to make people feel horrible, but it seems that it's not just harrassment that causes this shame. It seems that a lot of people feel this guilt naturally becuase they have internalized the fear of human sexuality that is very pervasive in this society. The 'lifers seem to have figured out how to manipulate an almost universal human fear. Arthur Silber talks about this phenomenon in his blog post, " Of Abortion and Women as the Ultimate Source of Evil", and Chris Hedges talks about it in his article " The Christian Right's Fear of Pleasure is Our Biggest Threat To Choice". Both articles apply mostly to Christianity, but I think many non-Christians have internalized shame and fear of human sexuality as well. As the Postsecrets have shown, people often secretly feel that their unwanted pregnancy or other negative relust of sex is some sort of "divine punishment." I wish I had saved all the other "God sent this to punish me for sex" postcards, because I swear I've seen a ton of them. So, discuss: Internal and external shame, guilt, fear, etc.

I think a lot of the fear comes from not learning enough about how all this works. Really, how sad is it that some women think they have a vaginal infection every month when they see their perfectly normal cervical discharge? And they're too embarassed to talk to anyone about it, because no one talks about these things, ever? It's pretty ridiculous.
The postcard shown is a great example. Chances are she wasn't "late" at all, but doesn't understand her body well enough to know when to expect menses. And doesn't even know that she can understand it more than she does.
Knowledge is the best cure for fear.

True, but maybe she does know her own biology, and she still feels that way? I think that a lot of people who are well-educated about their body and who aren't neccessarily religious or believe that God is so uptight about sex are still kind of superstitious. I once read a story about a woman who had an excellent sex-education when she was younger, and who didn't beleive masturbation was wrong thinking that the migraines she sometimes got during masturbation or other sexual activity were some sort of diving divine punishment.
I think education does help, but the fear will probably still be there.
EDIT: Ridiculous typo corrected.

PhaedraMcSpiffy True, but maybe she does know her own biology, and she still feels that way? Maybe you're reading too much in it? All I see is someone anxious not to get pregnant in this particular example. Not denying the phenomenon exists - but this, right here, seems more like a bitter joke than internalized guilt about sexuality. I'd squirm if I were unexpectedly late, too, for the obvious reason that I do not wish to face pregnancy. I don't have any qualms about my sexuality that would play into that.

After having an abortion, I still get a little antsy right before every period and every time it comes, I do a little "I'm not pregnant" dance. And my beliefs celebrate sex, not condemn, so I think it might just be a little of that. Even with the precautions I take now not to repeat the same mistake, I still get paranoid, because as we all know, nothing is 100%. And there ain't no way I'm having a kid right now, and abortions are not cheap, nor do I want to have another one, ever again.

I know just about everything there is to know about the female and male reproductive systems, all about contraception, sex, abortion and so on. I can think about all of that logically, but when I try anything even somewhat sexual in 'real life', my subconscious sends me feelings of pangs of guilt and embarrassment and little messages like "You're a whore."
Thank you 9 years of forced fed catechism. neutral

PhaedraMcSpiffy True, but maybe she does know her own biology, and she still feels that way? In the case of the postcard sender, if she knows her own body well enough to know she was not actually late, then what exactly would she be assuming God did? I don't think it makes sense in this particular context. I was only addressing fear, not guilt, in my previous post. Guilt is much more a learned response than a lack of knowledge.

I don't think that I'm reading too much into it. She says "I think God makes my period late just to watch me squirm." As if it's some sort of divine reprimand for having sex.
With this postcard it's subtle, but I can remember seeing ones that were more direct. These people expressed feelings of being divinely punished for sex.

I'm religious, and a pro-choicer, and I feel that way EVERY SINGLE TIME there's a mistake, and my period's late (I have a period that's VERY sensitive to stress, so every time I'm worried something could go wrong, I'm late)

I don't understand. You do feel like it's a divine punishment whenever your period is late?

PhaedraMcSpiffy I don't understand. You do feel like it's a divine punishment whenever your period is late? No, I just firmly believe God has a sense of humor. That, and it's a hell of a lot easier to blame some divine being, then my own sexual activity combined with a case of nerves. Of course, my religious ideas are... far from orthodox.

Oh. I see.
But the people sending in the secrets like the one I posted don't seem to believe that God has a sense of humor. Maybe it's just me, but they seem really afraid and ashamed, like God hates them for having sex or something.

I guess. I don't know. I can TOTALLY see myself joking about that, especially. And a friend's dorm has a "secret board" in it, and there's tons of not-serious posts on it. I wouldn't say you're wrong, but I also wouldn't say you're necessarily right.

Maybe it's just me, but they seem really afraid and ashamed, like God hates them for having sex or something. I don't know. I can only take the text on that package at face value, since I have no context for the woman in question. It comes across on me as what Rose describes; a bitter joke about worrying about being late. Then again, maybe it's because I'm simply not familiar with the deadly serious kind of believer, who would honestly be convinced that god would punish them for having sex in this manner. For the context I have, a bitter joke just seems more likely. *Shrug*

More Weird Postsecret Stuff: Quote: [written inside card] SINCE MY SON WAS STILLBORN AT FULL TERM I HAVE SOMETIMES THOUGHT OF KIDNAPPING A BABY THERE ARE LOTS OF CARELESS UNDESERVING BAD PARENTS I WOULE BE A GOOD MOTHER I CANT HAVE ANOTHER BABY -----Email Message----- Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2008 10:26 AM Subject: MISSFoundation.org When my only daughter was stillborn, I not only thought about kidnapping a baby, I planned it out in my head. I even found myself watching new mothers with their babies trying to pick the perfect one. The only thing that stopped me was knowing that that mother would then hurt just as much as I was. -----Email Message----- Sent: Sunday, April 06, 2008 2:29 PM Subject: Re: Baby Kidnapping Secret When I was 8 months old, a woman stole me off a carousel at Chuck E. Cheese. She was almost out the door with me when my mom caught her. The woman's sister explained that her daughter had been a still birth and that the woman thought I looked like her baby. My mom let the woman go. This is really sad and, to me, very hard to understand. Thoughts?
