Exit Only was a pidge on a mission. She woke up before sunrise today and was too excited to go to sleep again. Most pidges were still perching sleepily with their heads under their wings, but Exit decided to get an early start today. The flock depended on her to bring home food and interesting things after all. Sure, there were other scavengers too, but it was still a very important job. What treasure would she find today?
The air felt damp and chilly outside, but it would surely get better once the sun came up. Leaving the mill she flew towards her favourite scavenging grounds near the river. She had scouted out a overflowing trash can when she flew home yesterday but hadn't had any time to start rifling through it at that time.

Cotton hopped by the river bank, trailing her red strings of cotton. Of course, Cotton had white cotton as well as other colors, but this red cotton was the best for wearing, in her opinion. As she was a scavenger, she was up early to find some food for the flock. The river sometimes had the most amazing bits of stuff-- stuff from humans. Why, just the other day there was a newspaper with wierd beads in it floating down the river! Beads were not as good as cotton, but they were pretty. The beads could be strung on cotton, so that was good. Abruptly, Cotton noticed another Pidge. The orange and red ink immediately gave away that this bird was not from Cotton's flock. It was a Big Ma's. Cotton puffed out her feathers menacingly and strutted down to the other bird. "What are you doing here?" She asked icily. A bird from an enemy flock could not be a good one.

Exit had barely started to rifle through the treasures when she was rudely interrupted by a stranger. The other female was puffed up and looked threatening, and it looked like she was stuck in some kind of strings. Odd.
"What does it look like I'm doing?" she asked, annoyed. "I'm looking for stuff."
Exit Only didn't really mind scavenging alongside other pidge if they were civil about it, she wasn't that territorial. But she would fight for her spot at the trash can if the other insisted on being a jerk.

Cotton pulled herself up taller, wanting to make sure the other felt that Cotton was superior. "You're from Big Ma's," Cotton sniffed disdainfully. "and this is my scavenging spot." Cotton purposefully walked over to the trashcan and delicately plucked out a shiny piece of broken glass. That could be useful for cutting things or decorating them. Cotton walked huffily back to Exit, carrying the glass in her beak. When she reached the other Pidge, she dropped the glass piece so she could speak. "And since you're from Big Ma's flock, aren't you going to attack me or something? I heard that you Big Ma Pidge are violent." Cotton cocked her head as if to dare the other female to fight.

"Your spot?" Exit spluttered and puffed up further, "Hah! I happened to be here before you. And no pidge hold this territory as far as I know."
She watched the other pidge rifle through the treasures with a pang of annoyance. She didn't want that particular piece of glass, but the other pidge's attitude was rubbing her the wrong way.
"And since you're from Big Ma's flock, aren't you going to attack me or something? I heard that you Big Ma Pidge are violent."
Oh great, this had to be one of Baker's little troublemakers. Why couldn't they all dye themselves bright blue so you could avoid them from a distance?
"Word on the streat is that Baker and his gang of ragtag pidges are the real troublemakers," she drawled, picked up and discarded a gum wrapper and turned her back to the other pidge in an elaborate display of fearlessness, "And you're not doing anything to prove the rumours wrong."

"Hmm?" Cotton blinked. Was this really a bird from Big Ma's? What happened to they jump on pidges first and ask questions never? What happened to keep your distance from them if you like your feathers to be on straight? Cotton was unsure now. "No, Baker's flock is very reasonable..." Cotton hopped over to Exit to look at her in the eye. "And I guess that this is unclaimed territory, but I've been here often, so..." Cotton paused. She hated to feel that she wasn't in control, so she switched to a subject that she was sure of. "I don't know what rumors you've heard of, but I don't go around deliberately causing problems. Maybe the rumors aren't true?" Cotton peered closer at the other bird, as if to detect the truth in the other scavenger's eyes.

Reasonable? Exit wouldn't believe that until she saw it herself, that was: Never! She was not ready to forgive the unprovoked assault and insults
"..Maybe the rumors aren't true?"
"Maybe," she said without really mening it, "Well, we can at least gather in peace. I'm not going to fight unless you insist."
Suddenly feeling generous she extended a wing, motioning at the overflowing trashcan with its hidden treassure
"Wich side would you prefer," she asked. "I'll take the other one and we can get back to business."

"Left," Cotton said automatically and fluttered to her side. She picked around, occasionally stealing a glance at the other bird. Another flock, another day, and they could've been friends. With a small gasp, Cotton realized that she had just vroken one of the laws of her flock. She looked around her shoulders to see if any other bird was there, but she didn't see any. Perhaps she was off the hook.

Exit moved to the other side of the trashcan and started rifling through the scraps of soggy newspaper to find some shinies. She put things that might be worth taking home in a pile behind her. A few bottle caps, a spork and a wet french fry.
A cup caught her interest and after some pecking she managed to get the plastic lid off.
"Oh, ew!" she shouted after braving a taste of the black liquid inside.

Cotton picked up a few random shiny objects, then backed off. She nodded to the other bird and flew off without another word. Maybe Cotton would visit that trash can more often, and maybe that bird would be there again. Oh well. The hunting was pretty good today; some discarded bread that was mostly dry, a shiny old gum wrapper, and a lid from a toothpaste tube that the chicks would have fun rolling around. Yep, that trash can was a pretty good spot.
((I couldn't think of anything else interesting that would happen, so Cotton just left... Sorry.))

Exit Only watched the other pidge fly away. She finally had the trash can for herself, but she already had a nice pile of loot and couldn't carry much more than this home. The scavenger strutted around the trash can until she could no longer see the other, but then quickly gathered her finds and headed for the cotton mill.
((It's ok, sorry for being such a slow rp partner...))
