Financial analysis looks at PC vs. console costs

Even the most diehard PC gamer has to admit that their console gaming brethren get the better end of the deal as far as costs are concerned. But exactly how much does a console gamer save over the system'ss lifespan? A poster over at TechConsumer crunched the numbers and found that, when everything is added up, the savings aren't necessarily that great.

When all is said and done, the full Xbox 360 gaming setup (including TV, accessories and Xbox Live subscription) costs $3,152 over six years, about $350 less than a basic gaming PC for the same period. Of course that cost includes a 42" 1080p TV, while the comparable PC uses a relatively paltry 22 inch display. When a comparable screen is used on the PC, the savings on the console side balloon to near $1,200.

The real killer for the PC, of course, is the upgrades (estimated in this study at $250 every other year) and recommended full-on replacements (every three years) that come much more frequently than the console equivalents (one replacement every six years). So, PC gamers, is it worth the extra money?

So it's about $3,152 for the actual Xbox 360 experience..this also includes the HD-TV.

And the PC is around $1,2000 however...it also states around $250 for every year to have upgrades.

So in case Consoles seem to be cheaper.

boy, I'll say. 250 in upgrades? I can't imagine you getting much for the then-obsolete parts you put in last year.

Yet because PCs can scale games I don't need to spend $500+ to upgrade until I feel like it or there is a forced OS upgrade ala XP to Vista or repairs thanks to stupid mistakes that I make...

Nevermind the fact that console gamers pay more for games. Adding up that extra $10 to $30 a game quickly closes the much exaggerated gap.

The Crytek guys built a $900 PC able to play Crysis and it can shred the hell out of a majority of games out right now. There is also the return on the other things PCs do.

It's simple. FPS usually is better with a Mouse and Keyboard. And games like Mario and Zelda usually I think is better with a controller.

The whole keyboard/mouse thing is semi-moot thanks to the PS3 keyboard/mouse support and PCs supporting gamepads.

However controllers can't hot key every build type in RTS.

That's why there shouldn't be any console RTSs

They've..tired..C&C 3 on the 360 was ok. However it was hard without a keyboard and mouse since it doesn't support it. Console RTSs usually fail on a console..

Yeah, there's certain games that works well on PCs, but it doesn't translate well on consoles and vice versa. Hmm... i'll try to make a list

PC made games:
RTS
MMORPG
Click-and-Point type games
FPS games.

Console made games:
Racing (in my opinion)
RPG
Fighting
Action Adventure.
...someone help me here

Especially since I use a keyboard all day at work.

I can see how that works.
I'd like to point out the word "keyboard" I'll still play games that just use the mouse like all those delectable "Grow" games.

Keyboard.

Controller.

No difference aside from available buttons and that allows hot keys instead of having to scroll through menus. Far quicker to hit alt + 1 than R1 + scroll + X.
