So what religion are you, and what are your views on religion and the concept of god?

I was raised Catholic, but we're [my family] not very religious. I believe in God, but I don't believe in the church [man]. I believe in souls, heaven, & hell... the idea of reincarnation is lovely too.
I don't care if you believe in God, Allah, Vishnu, Rasta, or a plate of spaghetti. As long as you're a good person [or try to be one] that's what counts. Think about it, all the major religions in the world are all sending out the same message... it's just the tiny details that differ.
Just don't get me started on Evangelicals... please. I don't wish to offend anyone.

I'm an eclectic Pagan. For those in the know, it's probably most correct to refer to me as a shamanic greenwitch although I draw from a pretty wide range, including Wicca, the Order of the Wise (ie druids) and Asatruar (Viking/ Norse pagans)
That's why I put other-- Wicca is close but not quite.
BTW, Munchkin, could you please correct your poll for spelling? The term is Wiccan. Pagan is also fine. All Wiccans are Pagan even if not all Pagans are Wiccan.
I take a very mystic view on religion. It's not about organized people and thou musts. It's about learning to connect to the essential forces of the Universe. I totally think it's about learning all about LOVE. I personally work from a Pagan frame since that suits my temperament best. However I don't hold it against someone if they work from another religious frame of mind, so long as they respect mine. I have a very deep sore spot for those who attempt to shove their "one true way" down my throat. For crying out loud, I'm not even going to force my son to follow in my footsteps. He may well choose an ancestral path of Catholicism or Lutheranism (or a general unchurches christianity?) I do plan on giving him an almost Joseph Campbellish survey of religion as he gets older, so he has his eyes wide open.

I'm an atheist.
There isn't really much to say about atheism. If you try to defend or define it, it becomes a faith in its own right, and that's not what it should be about. Atheism means the rejection of the necessity of a religious explanation, or of religious views or doctrines. An atheist is simply someone who is completely unconvinced by any religious faith they have encountered, and by the notions that underlie religions in general. I am such a person.

Atheist here.
@ Forsaken_Virgin: Well, my definition varies from yours. Atheism is the lack of belief in a god or gods, and does not determine other possible religious beliefs.

Oxford American Dictionary says: a-the-ism noun the theory or belief that God does not exist. ORIGIN late 16th century: from French atheisme, from Greek atheos. a - 'without' + theos 'god.'

If you don't think there is a god, gods, higher being, then you're an atheist.

rockerpixie If you don't think there is a god, gods, higher being, then you're an atheist. Atheism is naught but the absence of religion. Many religions have no higher power, but are not Athiest. I would say that he is Agnostic.

slam-skull rockerpixie If you don't think there is a god, gods, higher being, then you're an atheist. Atheism is naught but the absence of religion. Many religions have no higher power, but are not Athiest. I would say that he is Agnostic. I always thought that agnostic meant you didn't know if god existed, so you're keeping an open mind... kinda like listening to both sides of the argument... And he says he doesn't believe, so, I say atheist. surprised xd BTW, most developed religions believe in a higher power, except animistic religions. Animism is the belief of souls/spirits, where the soul exists beyond the body. If humans have souls, then so do animals and plants. Animatism is the belief in impersonal power, such as mana. Totemism is religion by kinship, family relations. Totem/ancestor animal is god. Polytheism is the belief in many gods. Monotheism is the belief in one supernatural being.

I agree with rockerpixie. As I said earlier, atheism is not a lack of religion.
