Theoretical lolita here. I'm a little confused with the different types of lolita styles. Which style is the easiest for a beginner? I like hime lolita (the crowns are sooo adorable whee ) but it looks much too advanced. Also, would you use the same basics for every kind of lolita outfit, like petticoats and blouses?

Most lolitas start off with sweet or gothic, since they're the easiest to get items for and also the easiest to pull off without breaking too many rules. Remember, bending rules and blending styles can be a lot of fun, but you have to be careful not to overdo it, just like in any other fashion.

As for staple items, it depends on your particular tastes. You will need to have at least a petticoat, appropriate blouse and skirt or jumperskirt to start. A one piece is another option for those who are just starting out, but they're not nearly as versatile as the blouse-skirt or blouse-jumperskirt combination. Don't be tempted to go for accessories first, however. You can always use cute headbands, hats or hairclips until you buy that perfect Alice bow or headdress; you can't so easily compromise for the rest of the outfit.

If you're just starting out, it's a good idea to look over the guides that the moderators of EGL on LJ put together. You can find them here: Lolita on a Budget. They talk about how to minimize your spending and maximize your gains, especially as a starting lolita.

Wow! That was really helpful! ^^

One more question: In general, how long is a skirt/dress supposed to be? Does it hit above or below the knee?

Most lolitas prefer to have their skirts knee length, often almost on the dot. It's generally "acceptable" for regular lolita skirts to sit a bit higher [at most a couple of inches], especially if you're into punk lolita or erotic lolita. It also depends on personal preference or the style. Personally, for empire-waisted jumpers, I like the skirt hems to either be fully below the knee, but for skirts at the natural waist I like them knee-length or a bit higher.

If you have other questions about styles, you might want to check out the Lolita Handbook. It's currently under construction, but has a lot of information that's very handy for new lolitas. It covers the basic shape of a skirt, the most commonly seen styles, and has links to a lot of other useful resources.

Also, the FAQ sticky in this forum might help answer any more basic questions you have, so you might want to give it a browse. (:
