This is just a book that I'm currently writing and felt like sticking it somewhere where people could find it but would have to hunt for it and I could find it whenever my laptop may or may not crash and loose the whole thing. If anyone finds this, all I ask is that you don't steal it and publish it as your own. Otherwise, you can nab it and keep it for as long as you like. Okay, here goes.

It was winter, back when the Earth still had seasons, and it snowed, just the other day. However, the snow could not cover all of humanity's markings upon the earth, making buildings of any color stand out from the sterile-white dusting. Because of the snow, my aunt and uncle caught colds, unable to get out of the house in this below zero weather. Thus, I had to walk on up to the drug store and fetch their med.'s. All other people continued on in their ignorant lives, worried about a destroyed atmosphere yet continuing to drive their useless SUVs and thinking that they where high-class, some how. But I walked, pushing myself along on my own two legs and watching everything, cautious to not get into anyone's way. Then a cat appeared. This little thing could not have snuck up on me, as it was still a hundred feet from the closest object to hide behind! But I just waited a couple of seconds for the cat to clear off and watched it meander into the road in its prissy manner. Then vanish. It wasn't as if anything special happened; no boom or shimmer of light or strange material swirling out of nowhere to encapsulate it. Just simply gone. Stunned, I stood their for a few seconds, wondering how something could have done that so easily. But I just shook my head and walked on, not knowing what it was at the time and knowing that I could not do anything anyways.

It was a week after that incident and I was out to just grab groceries for the next two weeks when the same cat was wandering around the grocery store, sniffing around the front doors and pawing at it, wanting at the smell of food inside. It stopped when I approached and I squatted down next to it. What the hell. I thought and reached down and stroked the thing, knowing that my allergies would only kick in if it touched my face. However, as my gloved hand touched the thing, the cat looked to be getting larger and filling my vision, even though we never came any closer to each other and I was suddenly in an ordinarily sized room. The walls where white and looked at first to be ordinary walls. However, a second look around revealed rivets in the walls. I was in a giant metal box of a room and with only a door. Thinking quickly and already thinking through a strategy, I put my back to the wall and grabbed the handle and gave it a push. The other side turned out to be a hallway, made of the same material and painted the same bone-white color. Quickly running down it and peeking around the corner, I came to an empty store front. I let my pent-up breath out and was glad to find out that years of video games had kept me from loosing my cool. Knowing what store I was at from the way a full parking lot was positioned on the other side of the empty one in front, I had only gone a couple hundred yards away. So it was back to the cat. I ruffled it's ears a little to be kind and pet it, I soon found myself pulled into the cat and standing on sand and getting very warm. Knowing how some creatures in those games lived in the sand and went crazy if you even touched it, I stayed perfectly still and ran a hand down the cat's back one last time. It purred and looked at me. Nothing.

Well, nothing else to do I thought to myself. Standing slowly, I looked around. It was a beach with waves from the ocean crashing on it and only a handful of people in site. I was the only one wearing a black trench coat. Shrugging and walking inland, I was fairly certain that I was just fine, with all of the foot prints and no holes for things to mark where creatures had emerged before. The cat meowed once and followed me. It was a fairly large area, probably not even an island. I just hoped that it was somewhere around Okinawa, since I've never been in Japan and have alway wanted to. But, as I climbed up the hill, I found that it was a small island, one connected to a chain of them and the largest in site was an active volcano. Damn, only Hawaii. Disappointed and knowing that such a far travel meant that my chances for getting home where becoming slimmer and slimmer, I looked at the cat and sat down and put the thing in my lap. I looked at it and said, "I need to go home, okay? I'm hungry and need to go back." It just stared at me until I started stroking it gently. With another pull into the cat, I found myself sitting in a shelf for fresh produce that hadn't been filled yet. I quickly got down and set the cat down, knowing that this was probably the exact store I needed to go to, since the layout was exactly the same. The front door slid open and a bundled up person stepped in with a swirl of snow chasing them in. I was back, for some reason.

So, I continued on as normal and got my food. However, when I came back, my aunt was in a panic. "Where were you?!?" she said, tears filling up her eyes. "I was just getting groceries. What's the big deal?" "But that was three days ago. Where did you go?" I thought for a second. If I shifted through space, couldn't I have shifted through time also? "Honestly, I'm not sure. I went to the grocery store and petted some random cat. Next thing I knew," I said, wanting to cut it short, "I was sitting in one of the produce aisles. Otherwise, I'm perfectly fine!" She still cried silently and looked at me. "Well," she said weakly, "As long as you're okay." I smiled and told her that I'll be okay. I powered up my laptop and put away my food and logged onto my favorite site to start chatting with my friends and start doing things again for the Dark Brotherhood.

One of my best friends was on and started to ask why I didn't post for the Roll Play I had set up for her and I but I just told her to not ask. How do you explain a cat that randomly teleported you to places unknown?

After a few hours, my friend wrote in a very frantic way; ~Quick, turn on the news! Some thing's going on!!~
~Like what?~ I asked, not really caring.
~Just turn it on!~
When I did and saw what was all over the stations, I started laughing.
~It's a portal storm.~ I told her.
~A What?~
~Portal storm. It's a random and almost impossible anomaly of two separate points in space start to warp into each other. Look, you need to start hoarding food and arm yourself if you want to survive. These things could drop random creatures that want to eat you everywhere or suck you and everything around you up into another world. I have to go.~
I took off without bothering to shut down my computer and ran down to the hardware store, only to find I was too late; half of it was missing, simply bone and with a clean edge to that was left. I ran inside to find that everything was still perfectly fine but not a soul in sight. Still cautious, I snuck around to the tools and grabbed a crow bar. Nothing was going to be able to sneak up on me and walk away unscathed.

Risking the possibility of being spotted by anything from the other world, I ran to the other side of what was left of the store to grab a chainsaw. A decent weapon against anything that had a keen taste for humans. Satisfied, I strapped it onto my back with spare rope and jogged down the street to the gas station, just a few hundred yards away. What I found was more interesting than anything; people where jamming their useless vehicles into the pumps and trying to fuel up. Walking in and stealing a gas can from the back of an open pick-up, I pulled the pump out of the truck and filled the can and the chainsaw. I walked into the store to find absolute chaos at the register. I didn't care and felt no shame as I walked around the place and grabed whatever I could find that would keep at room temperature for months and had some nutritional value and ignored the man behind the register as he screamed at me for stealing. Then, a shock wave rolled across the place, tilting top-heavy SUVs some and throwing people back, I dropped to the ground. Looking up, I saw a giant mushroom cloud; we where being nuked. "Ah, the end of days." I said to myself.

I jogged back home, knowing that sticking around a potential fire-bomb that the gas station could erupt into, I found my aunt sitting at her computer and reading the news. She turned around at the sound of the door and looked surprised. "What's going on?" She asked. "Well, that shock-wave that just hit us was a nuke going off. Plus, portals are opening up everywhere." I threw all of the stuff I brought back from my short expedition onto the table but kept the crowbar with me. You never knew when something may happen in a portal storm. After a few minutes of using the precious time left available to use the internet ever again, I heard a crunching sound; the cat had followed me again and was trying to open up a bag of chips to get at what was inside.

"Go on, get!" said at the cat, waving my hand at it. It grabbed the bag and tried to run with it but I ripped the bag out of its mouth. It hissed at me, unhappy that I stole its food. My aunt was questioning what I had said in her head and finally asked, "Wait, what?" "Exactly what I said. We might loose power soon, though, so let's unplug the computers and hope we get to salvage them taler." I unplugged my main computer but left my laptop on to say goodbye to everyone I could, one last time.

As I typed the final message to everyone in the little community that I was apart of online I felt the excitement of an adventure, of danger, of doing something heroic. Whether or not this was from cutting off all contact with almost everyone I cared about, I knew that it would push me along to do what needed to be done. However, I did not care for the human race, as they had been so ignorant of everything around them and so full of themselves. However, saving my own kind seemed kind of important. "Now, where is that damn cat?"
PostPosted: Wed Feb 20, 2008 11:26 am

The little thing had found its way into the kitchen and was sniffing along the counters, trying to get at anything. Rolling my eyes and knowing what it needed, I opened the fridge and threw a bit of lunch meat at it. When it was distracted long enough, I sat down and explained everything to my aunt. She was moderately surprised but understanding. We grabbed all of the food we could and piled into the car and went to get my uncle from where he was working. "Well, what are we going to do? Do you have a plan?" he asked, always the one to play the devil's advocate. "Yes," I said, pulling the crowbar out of under my chair. "We get to the military base and hope for the best." No one had anything better to suggest, so we took off. On the way their, we found giant holes in the ground, almost like bombings. However, they where too smooth and the road next to them wasn't pushed back and up. We found the source of this, as we topped a hill to see a giant, spindly and four legged creature that used two arms to manipulate a giant weapon that it kept trying to use on cars. Wherever it shot, all light just seemed to dim and completely cease to exist in a beam. The ground at the point of impact would pull into itself, until there was nothing left of it. "Drive behind it and keep slow; we can't rick it even seeing us once." I said, remembering some of the crazy creatures in some video games that seemed to kill me instantly, just by simply looking at me.

The creature seemed more interested in following the highway, so we where able to take the right exit after half an hour and get to the military base. On the way their, all of the stores and houses where in complete chaos; piles of dead bodies could be seen in streets and bug-like creatures that walked on pointed legs where jumping onto running and panicking people and stabbing through them and feasting on them. However, what we saw next was even more horrifying to me than almost anyone else; a giant wall made of thick pillars of steel stood on the way of the road. "Pam, turn, turn! Go around the wall now!!" A part of the wall started to do what I thought it would; it lifted up a few of the pillars and pushed them forward and slammed into the ground, destroying a whole section of an apartment building. A walking wall. Luckily, the next turn was well before the wall and we where able to pull into the base. However, a strange vehicle was parked out front and was shooting a dark blur beam at all of the hum-V's on the other side of the chain-link fence and punching perfect holes through them, rendering them useless. "Drive through the fence." I said, pointing at a spot that had been weakened greatly by the strange weapon. "No, we'll get shot!" said my aunt. "No, we'll make it. Just push through and turn off to the right right away." She punched the engine and steered into the fence with shaking hands. She turned and the beam fired again, just missing the car by a foot. We had made it.

((Thanks, Kurai! I've been trying to keep posting at a minimum of two new additions to the story, but I just got too lazy to do even one yesterday. :p))

End of prologue

The calender said that it should be about a full year past that fateful day of when the city I lived close to was nuked and the portal storm had ravaged the surface of the Earth, leaving only two billion people out of six and a half, most dying from random things appearing, including giant pieces of another world. However, some had been pulled into that other world. I pitied them the most, even more than those who where cannibalized by people who had become zombies from the worms we came to know and fear; Inch worms, as most came to call them. They where called that because they where an inch long but not green and fuzzy; these things where a sickly light-brown and see through. They would move in groups, protecting the main one that could not breed, Instead, it was very intelligent and would use the others as nerve connections and make them reproduce. However, they would move around in damp places and be about half the size of a base ball and force their way into a person and take over the nervous system and kill people.
