In a world where many leading industry morons- er, I mean, industry insiders seem to think we should all move "forward" to a One Console Future

I read this, and it really got me thinking. Why is everyone in the gaming industry so OBSESSED with a one console future? What is your opinion on it?

In my opinion, one console (in other words, one company) is a huge mistake and a giant step backwards for the gaming world. Think about it--the big three (Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft) push their console, software, hardware, etc. more and more and improve like crazy on each next platform for what reason? Competition. To sell better and to do better than their opponent. Because of such competition, a cycle is formed that makes every company make their products better and better as time goes on--and we, the gamers, always win as a result.

Now imagine no competition. Therefore, no drive to push forward. No progress can be made when there's no reason to make progress. Then nobody wins, and gaming, which is already showing signs (actually, more than SHOWING signs, it's already there) of being a MASSIVE market, will eventually die out, and unlike the last gaming depression, there's no coming back from there.

Also, monopoly is illegal.

People have always proposed that dumb idea. It will never happen.

I don't think there'll ever be just one console. I don't even want one, due to the monopoly. Now, if Sony and M$ (and Reggie) would stab themselves and join up with eachother and Nintendo to make one console, great. It just isn't happening. In the meantime, there's always a good prosppect that on console will dominate in a generation.

I couldn't really tell you why some people think this is a good idea. I mean, you know my stance on this already.
But my distaste for the Wiimote and "waggle" is widely known in this guild (I'm certain my age has something to do with this) so can you imagine how pissed I'd be if the "One Console" were the Wii? And I had no choice but to use the frickin Wiimote to play ANY next-gen games? Uuuugggh....
While I still think we'd get some good games (devs would still try to make their games better than other devs' games) the actual functionality of the console itself would be horribly lacking.
This whole concept is just as stupid as having only One Car you could buy, or One Store that you could get your groceries at.

WTF? Age? That's something a n00b would say. You're insinuating it's for kids and we all have established that's not true.

In relation to this topic, I wouldn't want one console. Competition allows for improving to take place and the bar is raced. I believe technology is moving way too fast anyway (even thought that don't relate too much).

Also I wouldn't want a Console War that would ultimately make one console make the others obsolete like they have the chance to do in format wars. We're lucky that don't happen.

They've tired once with Sony and Nintendo when SEGA was failing hard. They've tired many times in the past and failed. So it won't work now and will never work again because many companies want to have success. So no one console will never work just like one OS will never work either.

Sorry it just seemed that way.

The other two consoles don't mean a thing to me at all.

For the Pay to play issue, until I hear more specifics I can't say too much more than they shouldn't be charging anything.

I don't know, the justification I see is Nintendo's online service isn't that big and that they'd need some money to help keep servers up...Nintendo isn't a big company like Microsoft or Sony that have tons of resources to pull from. They can't pour money into it and keep it free like Sony can with PSN...Nintendo is huge as a gaming company, but I don't think they can afford to keep servers up by themselves.

Personally, if I have to pay for a game worth playing online with the Wii, I'm cool with it.

Agreed. The Wii is undeniably the most popular console on the market today, and they're still selling like...

Something that sells really rapidly, for lack of an actual analogy.

They, unlike Sony and MSoft, made profit for EVERY Wii sold, from the beginning of the console wars.
Nintendo isn't just well-off for a gaming company- they're extremely well off for most any kind of company.

As for the One Console thing, it would be terrible for the industry in that there would undoubtedly be different versions of the same console coming from multiple different companies, and the slight hardware differences that you find in most single-variety pieces of equipment might affect gaming.

And paying to play on Nintendo servers... Not worth it yet, or, likely, ever.
Playing online on Brawl in it's first day of release was damn near impossible. Having that much lag on the servers every time an anticipated game comes out is NOT worth the money. Nintendo can most likely afford a VERY good server at this point, with all the Wii sales and whatnot.

THey seem to run like the old PS2 servers, to me, although I never personally experienced any lag on the PS2 servers.

Back to the issue of paying for service, in my opinion, gamers shouldn't have to pay for Xbox Live either.

If Sony can afford to run servers for free, then there is really no doubt that MSoft could too, so far as I see it.
