Okay, so I've found out a while ago the reason Queen (mainly Freddie) were so pissed off at their manager, Norman Sheffield, was because he'd locked them into a recording contract that gave them very little artistic freedom. Also, I heard Brian saying that they'd been forced to record "Queen II" in certain ways, though I couldn't find out any more details.

So, my question is this: what, exactly, were the limitations of their recording contract with Trident? Were they required to change certain lyrics, or alter the music to songs in order to make them more sellable? Did they have to skimp on time in the studio? I recall reading somewhere that it had something to do with royalties, but I'm getting the idea that there was a little more to the issue with their record company than that.

So, does anybody here happen to have the pieces to the puzzle that I'm missing? I'm curious! biggrin

Sorry for getting off topic but would this Norman Sheffield be the guy who "Death on Two Legs" was "dedicated" to?

Yup. biggrin In fact, when he saw the song, he actually tried to sue Queen for it--I believe the charges were for "defamation of name"! (How's that for irony? xd )

Lol
Weird. I never knew that.
(about the sueing, I knew what the song was about)
But dammit, I love that song.
It'd fun to listen to when you're pissed at somebody.

True, true. Hell, if you're miffed at all it's a great song to listen to.
As for the reason of the song, I think it's mainly about the money. I think they had to change a few lyrics, but money is the main motive.

Yes, I've heard that as well. I wonder what the exact circumstances were?

Really awesome song, all in all. I mean, you can just FEEL the rage just exploding out of it. Can't you just see Brian, Roger, and John? "Whoa, better not mess with Freddie TODAY man! He's pretty pissed..." rofl

Am I the only one who finds that thought quite amusing?

Of course not! Ha, I've thought the same thing. I wonder what Norman thought the moment he heard of the song.... that would have been interesting.

I've thought of that as well.
Freddie'd be pissed and go "Don't make me go 'Death on two legs' on your a**!"

Rofl.
Wow.
I laugh at the stupidest things. pirate

I believe the band felt Sheffield had in their words, 'Stolen from them, lied to them and caused them to be in debt.'

So, I don't think they particularly liked him.

Anyway, Death on Two Legs is an excellent song...great guitar solo just after intro piano.
