Erianthe curled up tighter on the couch, attempting to warm herself under the quilt, her cup of hot chocolate shaking gently in her hands as she took a sip, enjoying the burrning sensation.

"Y-yum." She stuttered, as she always
seemed to do. Inhaling deeply, she enjoyed the chocolate taste to its fullest extent, befopre wiggling on the couch again to get comfortable, the leather creaking with each movement. Erianthe sighed, feeling drowsy suddenly.

Alek sat next to her, plopping down on the worn leather as though bothered by something. Of course though... he was always bothered by something. He sighed, and picked at the leather, staring bitterly at the floor.
He was torn. He loved his sister, and he knew how fragile she was. He just couldn't bring himself to really speak to her. His mind was in turmoil. Just who were his and Erianthe's parents? Why were they here? The people were nice, but he had the distinct feeling that there had to be ulterior motives. Why else would a house take in kids off the street?
None of it made sense to him, and so he withdrew to think, alone in the room, even though she sat right next to him.

Erianthe jumped slightly when Alek sat down. Hot chocolate sloshed over the side of her cup and made it's way onto her quilt. She rubbed at the moisture until it was nothing but a dark spot. That done, she stared at the other cat, astonished at how much they looked alike, as she always was. He didn't turn to look at her, though, so she swung her feet over the endge of the couch and slip them into the light blue slippers that she had left there when sitting down. Standing up, she placed the mug on the table next to the couch, afraid that she would spill it, and placed the quilt over Alek, making sure that the wet spot was not on him, so that he wouldn't be cold. Satisfied, Erianthe grabbed ber mug once more and made her way to the kitched.

One of the other waywards in the bunch she belonged to (Erianthe thought his name was Evzen) was making a large amount of hot chocolate, one mug at a time, in the microwave. Hesitant, the cat made her way near him, her own mug shaking even though it was held in two hands.

"Ehh, what do you want?" He asked, after noticing her over his shoulder, while turning around to lean on teh counter, a mug of water spinning on teh plate in the microwave.

"M-me?" She returned, startled.

"Nobody else is here." He sighed at her, trying not to allow his annoyance through. She was part of his own group.

"M-may I h-have a cup of h-hot chocolate, p-please?" She asked, avoiding his gaze.

Evzen planned a remark before he sighed, thought better of it, and handed her one of the ceramic mugs.

"T-thank you v-very m-much." She smiled, finally catching his gaze, while trying to carry both mugs without her hands shaking. Evzen couldn't help but smile at the little cat, and allowed her to leave the room without any other remarks.
Erianthe, who shuffled slowly to avoid dropping the mugs, returned to the room she had been in before and approached her brother after placing her own mug on the table. With a nervous smile, she offered him the new mug in hopes that he wouldn't be cold.

Alek seemed to snap out of his own little world, looking up at his sister in surprise for a bare moment. For just that one moment, you could see how troubled he was, but he quickly walled himself off again.
He sighed, with a hint of sadness somewhere in there deep.
"I'm sorry Eri.... This isn't your fault." He said, and took the mug from her with a smile - a very rare smile.
The smile seemed to light up his entire being, as though there were something good there, something made of light even amongst all of the darkness that he'd taken on sometime in the past.
He set the mug down next to hers and patted the couch, holding up a half of the blanket so that she could share the warmth as well.
The smile left him, but a general feeling of contentment rose from him, so it was of no concern.

Erianthe stared for a moment, before she whispered something along the lines of 'You're welcome' and took the seat he offered hesitantly, making sure to step out of her slippers so that they wouldn't trip anybody.
As she covered herself with the offered portion of the quilt, she made sure to keep some distance in between herself and her brother, unsure if he'd want her to be that close. Hugging herself, she
looked to Alek, before moving her gaze to the wall opposite the couch.

"But i-it is. If I w-wasn't like this, t-things may have b-been different, r-right? W-we might not h-have h-had to c-come here." She spoke after a moment or two, just loud enough so that the other could hear her.

Alek looked at her seriously, a slight frown on his face.
He pushed back a lock of her hair and sighed, replying in a soft and caring voice, "Ifs will get you nowhere. You are you. There isn't any sense in telling me how things could have been, or thinking to yourself that things hinged on only you. I would have left you if I didn't care. I would have walked away from you no matter how you are."
If nothing else, he was honest.
He ran a finger gently along her jawline, continuing. "You act like I'm going to bite you or something. But ... I wouldn't ever do anything to hurt you. Not intentionally."

Erianthe flinched at his touch, before avoiding his gaze as he lovingly told her why she was wrong. She absorbed every word, and, out of habit, had moved away from him slightly while he spoke. As he finished speaking, she finally caught his gaze.

"Why haven't you left me, Alek? Why do you stay with me, even though I must be such a bother to you?" She looked at him pleadingly, unsure of what his answer would be to the question she had so desperately wanted to ask ever since they had come to the Wayward Children Pound.

Alek shrugged, and replied, "Because you're family, and I love you. I may be a piece of s**t, but I sure as hell aren't just about to abandon you." He seemed to sigh then, his sadnesss showing through.
This time, he made no attempt to hide it. This time he strove to be understood, before the wave of ice swept in on him again, making sure that he wouldn't feel a thing. "It's just... I don't know what to do, and this place is strange. Why are they helping us? There has to be another reason why they took us in." He seemed almost in tears then.
""I won't leave you because you are the only thing anchoring me here. I don't want to dream any more. I don't want to think, to feel...."

Erianthe, feeling warmed, although not in temperature, threw her arms around Alek's neck in as tight a hug as her body could manage.
"B-but dreams k-keep us going. T-thinking and f-feeling...they're w-what k-keeps us alive." She murmured into his shoulder, nuzzling the side of his head. "If y-you stop d-doing any o
f t-them, you won't b-be the same p-person I've always l-loved."

Realizing what she had done, she pulled away suddenly, unsure if the hug was called for. She chose to watch him carefully, though, and continued speaking in a whisper.

"D-do they h-have to have an u-ulterior motive? C-can't they just be k-kind?"

"There is no such thing as kindness. They seek to control us. That is why I don't think that staying here is a good idea." He muttered, unsure himself whether it was wise to simply keep fighting the tide.
"Of course though... they provide for your condition. That puts them a fraction higher in my estimations." He finished, missing the warmth of her, even if not the sentiments behind it. She couldn't posibly understand. She didn't know to what lengths he had gone to keep them safe. She didn't know about the prostitution. She didn't have a clue about the scrounging. He'd purposely kept these things from her... and if she knew, then he had yet to find evidence of it.

Erianthe found herself wiggling away as subtly as possible, trying to put space between her and her brother, although it was painful to do so. When he was like this, he was almost scary. No matter how many times he told her he loved her, she couldn't help but feel like it was her fault that he had become who he was today.

"But how can they control us? By p
roviding us with shelter and food?" Erianthe was having trouble understanding Alek's train of thought. "I am very grateful that they provide specially for me, which is why I will continue to believe that they are just being kind until I am proven incorrect." She smiled at him, showing her complete belief in what she said and that she wasn't trying to argue with what he had said.

"We are in their debt. That is how they control us. We can't go now... it would be wrong. But we have to keep relying on them.. there is no other way." He replied, hoping that if he explained where he was coming from, she just might understand.
Her distance only made him more aware of how cold he was, a cold not born of physical temperature, but of habit and nature. It made him feel like needles were stabbing at his heart, to think that she was afraid of him - even only a little bit.

"We can r-repay them when w-we're older; r-right now, we s-should just focus on l-learning. All of t-this deep thinking i-is making me sleepy." Erianthe shivered, feeling a bit cold since she had forgotten to put her slippers back on and feeling a bit weak along with her tiredness. She hadn't had her nap today, had she? She couldn't remember.

He sighed, and withdrew into himself. She didn't understand.
"I suppose... learning what?" he ventured, changing the subject. "I know what I need to. What could they possibly teach me? I know how to survive, I know some basic first-aid.... anything beyond that is extra. I do like to reasearch things though... maybe they have a library?"

Erianthe felt the need to lay down, and decided to lean against him, her head on his shoulder, not caring that she had wanted to give him space.
"H-how to be h-happy?" She replied seriousl
y. "And, I h-have seen other W-waywards with books, so t-there must be o-one. I c-could ask one o-of the others from the b-bunch they put m-me in; t-they would p-probably know where i-it is."
