So, I was thinking today about how each of the Big Three consoles each offers downloadable games, but they each do it in three very unique ways. In a world where many leading industry morons- er, I mean, industry insiders seem to think we should all move "forward" to a One Console Future, this particular facet of next-gen gaming has shown how healthy competition benefits the consumer.

First, we have the Nintendo Wii. It's service for downloadable games (called the Virtual Console) allows you to download and play an impressively large backlog of classic games from many old Nintendo consoles, as well as the Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx16 consoles. Most of us remember these old consoles fondly, and the sheer nostalgia I felt when I played the SNES version of SimCity again for the first time in a decade almost overwhelmed me. The Wii's Virtual Console service caters to a gamer's past and allows us to relive some of our fondest memories of childhood console gaming.

Next, is the Xbox 360's service, called Xbox Live Arcade. In what could be called the most unique service of the Big Three, XBLA allows you to download and play, not old console games like the Virtual Console, but old arcade titles like the name implies. Games that never made the transition to a console (or at least an accurate transition) are available, like Centipede and Pac-Man. While the appeal to the Super Old School Gamer that resides in all of us is certainly cool, the coolest thing about this feature is that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to find some of these classics anywhere else.

And that leaves us with Sony Playstation 3. The PS3 offers some interesting choices to the user with it's downloadable games, available on the Playstation Network. Sony has taken two uinique routes. On one hand, you're able to download entire new games from the Playstation Network, new releases that have not been available prior in another form. These titles are often cheaper than new releases bought at retail. Another choice for the PS3 user is the ability to download classic Playstation titles and transfer them to a PSP and play them portably. The ability to take some beloved classics on the road with you is an extremely nice perk that comes with owning a PS3.

So that leaves us with just one question: Which of these services do YOU prefer? Personally, most of my childhood gaming was spent on the NES, and since I am currently railing against the slow inevitable march of aging, the nostalgia I get from the Wii's Virtual Console makes me prefer it the most of these three services. Were do you guys sit on this issue?

EDIT: I'll be moving this to Viking Media soon. mrgreen

Downaloadable Games like the VC serve a great purpose. The XLBA kind of is..eh. They have arcade titles yes, but the VC has Turtles in Time which is better than the Arcade version. This being said, I haven't tried the PSN shop that much. I did the PSP Tekken game on the PS3 which is great. So I think in that sense the PS3 maybe might have PSP games ported. I think the best is the VC..however, it just has that nostalgia feeling to it.

However some of the games are not always...true to their form sometimes the emulation messes it up. But hey it's ok.

I liked PSN the best actually. The VC is a close second. I don't know much about the XLA.

The PSN does a great job of giving you a bunch of full great games and a couple of great classics. One of it's downfalls is it's current lack of classics and the fact that there are way too many games that require the PS3 eye, but all in due time.

The VC does an amazing job of offering some of Nintendo's greatest classics that the younger generation might have missed out on. I personally love it because I get a chance to play some games that I would never be able to get my hands on. (Still praying for Earthbound) The only problem I have with the VC is that it could offer so much more. I'm still looking forward to the Guitar Hero 3 downloads because that might lead to the VC offering up even more then just classic games.

Since I have all three, I can easily choose which one has the best console downloadable service. And the winner goes to Xbox live!!! Xbox Live is the best because not only is it the first console to include this feature, but since it has been here for a while, it has the largest selection for almost every media. You can download demos for almost every game for the console, arcade games, old console games, and even indie games.

The PS3 comes in second. They have a very similar idea with their downloadable service, but they have a much smaller selection, but they are starting to let people download old PS1 games and put them on their PSPs which is a cool idea. Eventually, the PS3's downloadable service might even beat the Xbox 360 version when they get a much larger selection of items to download.

The Wii came in last because it only lets you download old console games and channels. It might have came in second if only they let users download demos, but since they didn't, it is the worst of the three.

PSN takes the top for me, with PS1 games downloadable, I can't say no to that... *longs for MGS to go onto it*

The XBLM is second here, with the Xbox Originals (Psyconaughts, Indigo Prophecy, Crimsion Skies) all available for download it's rather nice.

The VC has no real value to me.

I personally don't care about any of them. It's just something about playing old games on a new console that isn't very satisfying. I'm sure that isn't the only reason but I can't put my finger on it.

If I did have a PS3, then maybe I'd go for the PSN because of the downloadable games (Warhawk, SOCOM, etc).

Really?

This allows me to say Supreme Commander is s**t!

WHOO HOO! Never playing that crap again!
[/sarcasm](Supreme Commander is actually quite enjoyable, can't wait to rent the 360 versino)

Anyways, I don't think I could like any one better than the other. Mostly because I wouldn't use them that much. XBLA gets props for Rez HD though...

Well, I was being sarcastic, just to annoy Blues, but even so... right after making those statements I have now posted a new thread in the PC Subforum, desperately seeking an answer to a very important question.

Anyone got any crow I can snack on? confused

I like Xbox Live Arcade the best. Virtual Console's emulations aren't always true to their original versions, and although there's SOME good stuff on there, there's mostly crap on it. For every gem on Virtual Console (such as Contra III or Super Mario World), we'll get crap like China Warrior or Urban Champion.

As for PSN, it doesn't really have enough actually good titles to stand out. The only titles that are actually good enough to stand out are Calling All Cars and Everyday Shooter. Even Tekken: Dark Resurrection wasn't all that great on PSN. It just doesn't have enough good games, or enough games in general.

I think XBLA is the best because it has some really good arcade stuff/oldies (like TMNT and my personal favorite, Doom) and some excellent original content (such as Assault Heroes and Undertow). Also, its games tend to be slightly less expensive than PSN or VC.

And in a STUNNING turn of events, Zombicide chooses the 360's service over the others!! mrgreen
Just messing with you man. XBLA gets mad props from me just for the old school TMNT...

But as for PSN, I think you're forgetting about Warhawk...
