Make sure you get a good tone wood, and high output pickups, but depends on what kind of style you are going to play. If you are going to slap it then you need the higher output. Pretty much the same as a guitar, but basses seem to cost a little more cuz there is more wood. I like Music Man's, they are not to heavy either, but now I play a spector euro 5 string, sounds way better. If you look for used you may be able to get a musicman for 700-800, my first sterling was 800 used.

The guy from godsmack, and rex from pantera both use Spectors, Flea used to use a Musicman, but now he uses modulus. I would like to own a modulus someday. Spectors, modulus, and musicman all use humbucking pickups, so the output is higher just like in an electric guitar.

Personaly if I was going to buy a baseball bat attached to a cinderblock I would buy a warwick. At least they have good tone. wink

You could get an Epiphone Thunderbird (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Thunderbird-IV-Bass?sku=518391"

It's pretty cheap ($300), comes in a couple colors, and sounds pretty good.

Oh, and I'm using a Gibson Ripper (http://www.gibsonbass.com/ripper.php)

No, you can't have it. ;D

Sorry I was being an a** the other day. I just don't like Dean. The Epiphone sounds like a good buy though.
