I need some good metal pickups. I've been looking at Dimarzio pickups, and Seymour Duncan pickups. From what i've heard, they're both pretty good, but most of my guitar idols use Seymour Duncans, and I LOVE their tone (Syn FTW!!!). Any help would be appreciated!! ^^ If you say one, can you please give me a brand of the pickup? (ex. Dimarzio D, etc.) If it's any help, i'm typically in Drop D. Any recommended positions?
And i'm caught between 2 amps... Line 6 Spider III (75 Watt [$300]), and Marshall. I want to ask the guys at Guitar Center, but I never go (Noooo!!!!)! I've listened to some Spider III's, and they sound pretty good. And some Marshalls are alright. I don't really like the tone. But I recently got a pedal that makes even my crappy 15 watt starter amp sound good! I've heard Marshalls are louder, but Spider's are more tonal. Any suggestions/help? I'm also open to other amp brands too! (Peavey supposed to be pretty good...) Any brand of Marshalls good? Aside from Half-stacks...
BTW, my limit is maybe $400 if I push it... so....! And I need something that has good tone, and can pull it's wait at gigs.

idk, about pick ups, i want to get some emgs, but thats me
as far as amps i think if i got a new one it would be another fender 212 fm. change the speakers to something with a higher quailty and your set with 100w.

If you are looking for output in your pickups, I like EMG's they are pretty sweet, I have played some in the store, and I have active EMG's on my bass, and they rock. I have custom Seymor's on one guitar, and they are OK. But I think the king of all pickups are Bill Lawrence, check the website, it is the only way to get them. If you want to hear them in action listen to anything by Pantera, pickups don't get much hotter than those.
As for the Amp, I would invest in an all tube, if you put off the pickups for later and combine your 400 and money for pickups you might be able to get like a good starter tube amp. Pro's on a tube, I think that the modeling pedals and amps (line6) can come close, but they are not the same. I think you can get like a fender deluxe amp for like 600. Marshall all tubes are probably out of the question, (too expensive). Also the tube amps are easier to fix, cuz they don't have all the computer junk. I have PodXT live pedal that is broke(customer support is not too helpful too), and it is going to cost a fortune to fix, cuz there is no warranty anymore. In hindsight i should have just bought another guitar with the 400 for the pedal.
That is just my take on things, but I live in humid Hawaii, where the humidity destroys everything electronic in a couple of years.

By the way, the Bill Lawrence pickups are pretty reasonable too. I am actually thinking of picking up one of their swampcasters, just for the pickups, they are sooo sweet.

Alright. Definetly the Line 6 lll amp, since it has much more of a selection of artists and allows you to be creative, although marshall has better quality.
EMGS!!!!!!! best pickups for metal hands down.

A pick-up change won't make that much of a difference in sound if you're playing it through a SS amp like the Line 6 or Marshall. I say invest in a small tube amp.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation/tube-guitar-combo-amps?N=100001+338503+8
You need AT LEAST 50 watts of power from SS amps with gigs, but 30 watts with tube amps, 16 IF you do not need cleans. Anything larger than that would have a PA system you can hook it up too.
For pick-ups, maybe check out some Dimarzio Evo's. As for Seymour Duncans, a SH-4 or SH-6 if you want something or higher gain for the bridge, and SH-2N Jazz for the neck would be a pretty good combo. For actives, I prefer the sound of Seymour Duncan Blackout's. They're more sensitive to the wood of the guitar and have better dynamics. If you're guitar has crappy wood, either save up for a better one or get EMG's. I prefer an 85/60 combo.

i belive solid state are more reliable and alot less frigial cuz you dont have to baby them like a tube, plus most of pantera's stuff was done on a randell solid state amp.

Get some EMG Pickups. They're amazing. But if you buy some, you won't have enough to get a really powerful/good amp. The best thing you should do is, buy an amp now, save up for new pickups later. Maybe this amp:

I'm looking at the Line 6 Spider III 120 watt now. but I odn't think it fits my parents' budget xD
As for the pickups, I'll hve to look at EMG's. What are some bands that use them? I prefer the tone that Synyster Gates of A7X had in the City of Evil album...

Frankly, I think the Spider is a digital piece o' crap. Anything over the 15 watt is UN-NECESSARY. You could easily get a nice sounding tube combo and STILL have enough money for pick-ups if you still don't like the sound.
Well, Dethklok uses EMG's and Alexi Laiho of Children of Bodom USED to, but he switched to SD Blackouts.

Maybe after a few years then he will realize tubes are the only way to go.

A few years...*shudders at the thought* It seems like you're right. IF you get the Spider, DO NOT buy pick-ups. Hell, buy a BIGGER Spider. Just know you're buying a bigger starter amp, same goes for the Marshall. Marshall MG's blow chunks, hell, I don't even use mine for practice anymore, I use it as a drink-holder.

There's a reason i'm not going for tubes... all the one's i've seen are a bit out of my price range ($600+ are the one's I see... those are the cheapest i've seen). My price range is a bit below $400... Maybe not even that much.
