Should the United States nullify the trade embargo with Cuba? Why or why not?

I think the trade embargo on Cuba has been over-lived. It shouldn't be illegal for an American citizen to travel to Cuba. The red-scare of the 50s is dead.

munchkin definitely, Cuba isnt a threat to us and our Government just doesn't want to admit it. Exactly. I'm waiting for the next Cuban Revolution to begin. The younger Cuban generation are beginning to finally question authority, something I believe all nations should do once in a while. People should not fear their government... the government should fear the people. 3nodding

I absolutely agree that we should be allowed to travel to Cuba. Personally I'd love to see what they do with organic agriculture... I'm told they've done a lot in the post-Soviet era

well I'm proud of Cuba in a way for being the closest to having true communism, but Fidel got to greedy and wouldn't give up his power, if only Che where still alive. Though I find it pretty awesome that Fidel used to actually go out during harvests and help the people, that is pretty awesome, but like all governments it became corrupt and Fidel got to greedy.

Cuba is one of the most functional states currently in existence (if functional state isn't a contradiction in terms). It is one of few nations that manages to maintain a decent standard of life for its citizens without exploiting children in the third world or working its citizens to death in appalling conditions. I shall be going there this summer, as part of the International Brigades program, to help share the load and learn about what the people there have achieved. The death rate of children in Havana is half of that in the US capital. Think about that. A nation the size of the US, with all the rescources at its disposal, vs. the tiny island of Cuba. While your thinking, reflect that in a recent UN study, Cuba alone was found to meet criteria for sustainable development in terms of living standards and environmental impact. The US embargo on Cuba is the act of a tyrant state that sees itself as some sort of global police force. Join csc now! Visit www.cuba-solidarity.org.uk for more information.

They have one of the most self dependant and fastest growing economies there is. They are an example of how communism can work. The only real problem they have is government oppression. If the US could copy their economy we wouldn't have to outsoure everything to third world countries.

The embargo is what keeps the gov in power. It gives the leaders the ability to say "US is enemy. They want to they kill you all. Follow us and we will protect you." Without the embargo their would be no great enemy to scare the people with. Basically, the embargo makes the US look mean to the Cubans, allowing the gov to use them as a threat.

My understanding is that we put it on them because they were communist, if we embargoed China because they were communist, wed be screwed.Enough is enough, lift the damned embargo.

rockerpixie I'm glad you agree. The embargo is a RIDICULOUS joke, and needs to be lifted. no at least not yet. I know Cuba is making strides but I still think as long as it is a Communist nation, we shouldn't trade with it. Do we trade with North Korea?
