Not in my History Arts class, at least. stressed

My teacher, Mr. Hoagland (since I doubt any of you will stalk a teacher anyway), constantly preaches to us about how evolution is a hoax. He's given most of the class no evidence to support his idealogy on this, just me. He gave me this website:

http://www.drdino.com

Check it out if you want, whatever.

So anyway, he told me to watch "Lies in the Textbooks." So I did. Well, a nice chunk of it anyway. It's way too long. gonk I watched about forty minutes of it.

Now, I do consider myself to be a reasonable individual. Even though I disagree with Mr. Hoagland's ideas, I was willing to hear his side of the argument and let him present his evidence. (Whoa, lawyer much? XD)

But... I found myself shouting at the computer monitor. >_O
But I did watch it. The important part is that I watched it.

My beliefs on the matter haven't changed, but I watched it.

So now I have to go in tomorrow, and he'll smuggly say something about how the videos probably changed my mind, and I'll say that, no, they didn't, and he'll consider me ignorant for not "realizing the truth" or some such...

And the irony is astounding in all of this.

But I dunno, he just bugs me. >_O It's not that creationism is wrong. I'm not saying that. People have their beliefs and that's fine. But it's just that he tries to bring the argument into the classroom, and I think that's wrong. He's a nice guy and all, y'know, but he's trying to push his beliefs onto us, and it bothers me.

Discuss:
Religion in public schools?
Evolution vs. Creationism?
Teachers that bug you?
The videos, if you watch them?
Etc.

(I would say to keep it in debate and don't get into heated arguments, but I know you girls better than that. wink )

To be honest, I don't think that Evolution OR Creationism should be taught in school.
A child that has a belief gained their belief from either their own research or through their upbinging.
By telling them that they are wrong, he is leading them into thinking that everything they know is wrong. Especially if they have been brought up with their beilef.
In effect, trying to push beliefts onto people is harrasment.
Of which he should be warned that such teachings are not for his classrooms or for him to voice when unquestioned.

I think it's okay that both are taught in schools. It's not okay when a teacher presses upon a child that one or the other is the absolute truth, and thus, that the other one is completely wrong. No matter what you believe, you should be trying to give the kids an unbiased [as possible] view so that they can make up their own minds. We weren't there when the world began and therefore, no one can say what really happened. Maybe both theories are wrong. No one knows... so no one should be allowed to say it like it is.

Last time i checked, people WEREN'T allowed to teach Creationism in schools. :/ Maybe it's different where you live.

While i believe in Creationism, i don't believe teachers should push their beliefs on students or tell them they're wrong for what they believe. Everyone is different, and since the whole Evolution vs. Creationism thing has yet to be solved [please don't argue with me here. >_< I'll get upset, for real.], there's no reason for him to push his ideas on you. It's pointless to argue about such things.

I would go to the principal, maybe? Like i said, i'm not sure it's even legal for him to be teaching Creationism.

I believe evolution is the more likely of the two. I've never been a religious person, and I've always leaned more towards science and facts. (Ha ha, Edward Elric much?) But I'm not saying Creationism is entirely impossible. Evolution seems more easy to believe.

To me, I think its important to learn all theories/beliefs. That was probably my favorite part of World History, was learning how all the different religions viewed things. Of course, I'm very open to everything, and I just think no matter what everyone's going to think something different (no two people think the same, even if they think they do, they process things differently). So, no offence to anyone, but I really don't see the big deal. You learn it, and you learn everyone's theory/belief, you might not agree, but at least you can accept that others think that way.

But yeah, if someone presses me to believe someone, saying "My way or else!", that's when I start getting ticked off.

There is supposed to be separation of Church and State, I remember how my mother got ticked off when my bus driver decided she'd force us all to listen to little kid Christian music (of course, all us fourth graders just thought it was annoying and didn't think much else of it xD).

But yeah, I think its ok that everything be taught, as long as it isn't shoving it down anyone's throats.

:/ I think you're open to what you believe in, and they should teach evolution in a science classroom, and creationism in a history class, or something... And remind the students that you shouldn't get offended and that you are entitled to your own beliefs...

Vampy: You could be right that neither should be taught. I don't know, though. The idea is that schools are supposed to educate people, and that might count as witholding information... but then again, since nothing's been proven, maybe not. S'all very complicated.

But you get a high-five for the "people shouldn't push their beliefs on others" part. *High-fives*

Chibilicious: I'd be okay with both being taught, but the problem is that every religion has its own version of how we got here. If we teach Creationism (in the Chirstian sense), we'd also have to teach every other explanation that every other religion believes in. I don't think we have enough room for that many classes.

Now, if we just group all of the different religions into one class called "Creationism: Religious Explanations" or something like that, it'd be fair. But could we really get all of that information into a single class? And think about how many parents would be enraged that their kids are basically in a religion class when there's that whole "seperation of church and state" thing going on. I don't know if there's really a solution to this...

Poisonous Genocide: I'm pretty sure it's still not allowed, but he seems to be getting away with it. I suppose it's because he's not "offically" teaching us about creationism/evolution. His class deals with theater and plays, so there's barely a relationship between religion and his subject matter. I would go to the principal, but the teacher's not a bad guy, y'know? Just a little... set in his beliefs. There's the possibility of him getting fired or something, and I don't want that to happen.

Smirk: ...You made me wanna watch FMA. Way to go. XD

Linux: Wow. ._. High-five your mom for me. XD Christian music is annoying. (I'm Catholic, so I'm allowed to say that. Nyanya.)

Valerie @ Chibi: We actually have a class like that at my school. It's very interesting. We learn about different religions of the world and what they believe and stuff. And we take field trips to their places of worship. Sadly, i was only in that class for one semester so i only got to learn Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, but it was still a great class. 3nodding We went to a Synagogue and were going to go to a Mosque, but we couldn't get the funds or something, i dunno.

Yeah, i thought of that. XP Maybe just tell the teacher how you feel?

I have one belief. They should touch on all main views and let the students decide for themselves. Either that or not touch on it at all which they kindacan't skip around the beginning of time.

I have to agree with Chibi on this one, I think both should be taught in schools, but I also think you should have a choice to learn either one.

I myself am more of an evolution-happened-and-I-agree-with-the-big-bang-theory-but-that-doesn't-mean-i-don't-believe-in-a-higher-power type o' girl.

@Toxicaust: D= What? There is no justice in the world! I want that class....
Not that I'm a particularly religious person, but I'd like to learn about other religious ^^

Yeah, the thing is, creationism comes from Christianity, which is a belief system. Evolution comes from science, which is like an anti-belief system: it requires proof and evidence for everything.

Now, am I not wrong in saying that, just as Christianity is a belief system, so is Islam, so is Hinduism, so is every single religion on the face of this planet.

In the interest of keeping religion and public education separate, either teach none or all of those beliefs. However, evolution is science, and as such, should be presented as part of the science curriculum.

Obviously we should learn about different faiths and beliefs, but not as science.

I kind of don't give a s**t if I offend anybody. This is something that pisses me off to no end. Sorry if I did, but yeah. It hits a goddamn gigantic nerve.

Magic.Neon says...

The way my school taught Creationism definately made me look into evolution.

It was basically this:

'KAY SO GOD MADE THE WORLD AND THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING AND IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT YOU'RE GOING TO HELL AND SATAN WILL RAPE YOU'

Thing is, they didn't even teach us about evolution - creationism was the only explanation. Shitty religious schools, I'm only there because they always get better results in league tables.

...now bow down!

as long as they're taught as theories, and don't lead the students to believe they're solid facts, then i think it's ok

if someone says "this happened, not this" then, that's just stupid

it's the kind of subject where you have to give students the options and let them derive for themselves which they think is the best, or whatever, or they can dismiss them both
