Tonight, Vara was out for a walk. Living in close proximity with the stallion Scythe certainly was pleasant. More than that. It was the happiest she had been since she could remember. Still, it was nice to get away for a little while and take time to think. The night was a good time for reflection. The birds had quieted but the insects still sang their chorus. They kept her good company even when she was alone like this. They always had.
The air was warm enough for an early springtime night but carried a n** of winter's chill. "Just give in and become spring already," she chided softly with a smile. She couldn't bring herself to be annoyed at the weather in her current mood. No, life was far too pleasing for her to be unhappy at much of anything right now. Even as that was, she couldn't help but feel strangely uneasy. The chill wind brought with it the hint of a scent, too faint to identify.
What could it be?

The earth seemed still, as his heavy hooves trodded over the land that had once been known to bring him happiness. Tonight was going to be a hard night. That was for sure. But he couldn't help but enjoy the subtleness that was the silence.
His tail flicked under the wolf pelt that he carried upon his back.
Honey colored orbs glanced around the area, looking for some form of life.. He was hungry after all..
His belly rumbled, and he sighed. It had been too long since he had gone on the hunt.. It had been since the little mare named Naina had approached him.. And that had ended unsatisfactory to say the least.. He hadn't even been able to take a nibble..
His ears perked, and his eyes became watchful like that of a predator. He had heard something.. A soft something, but no predator disregarded the sound of a possible meal. His eyes were like a hungry wolf.. as that indeed was what he was to the right extent.
He growled slightly, giving a slight grin.
All would work out in the end.

It was a war between curiosity and common sense in Vara's mind. Common sense told her that if she was instinctively uneasy about something that she should probably just let it be. Poking your nose into the wrong places almost never ended well. Still, her curiosity called for her to go on. "This is going to be trouble, I can tell." She huffed out a breath and pushed onwards, ears upright and alert. If there was anything out there she'd at least try to be ready for it.
In the back of her mind she realized she was probably being silly. Scythe had been living in this area for a while and hadn't told her about anything dangerous in the area. Certainly something fierce enough to hurt a soquili would have left signs.... unless it was new to the area, like her.
She stopped still at this thought. Maybe she ought to think a little more carefully about this.

He was new to the area.. yes.. But he presence had remained unnoticed past rumors and hushed whispers of something evil and dark stalking their dreams.
And that was true.. Only rumors were going around.. Hushed little talks of how others thought that a true evil was stalking them as they walked.
They were only partially right. He only stalked the ones he killed. If he stalked one of the Soquili telling these rumors.. They would not be alive to be telling..
His eyes watched as the mare almost brought herself to him. He was hidden in the trees. His eyes glowing, but he remained hidden rather well.
She wasnt feet away from him. He could even smell the musk of her sweat.
He licked his canines. His stomach trying to make light of the situation. It was hungry.
He was hungry..

The longer she stood there in that darkness the more keenly Vara felt that something wasn't quite right. It wasn't any one thing, it was the combination. The strange smell, the sudden silence, even the way the darkness seemed to cling to the shapes around her didn't seem natural. Her heart began to speed in her chest but she willed it steady again and breathed deeply in and out. She would not let herself be overcome by fear.
It was time to take command of the situation or at least enough to give her more peace of mind. "Is there someone out there?" She asked the question quietly enough that it wouldn't attract danger from afar. If it was close enough to hear her already then it could easily follow her should she choose to retreat.

He watched her all jittery.. He watched her fear of what she couldnt see. It made him grin. That was what he wanted to see..
He paused, before smiling again and speaking in a low voice.
"Course not."
He said, stepping out of the shadows like a nightmare. His eyes were glowing with malice and his teeth were shimmering in the moonlight. His pelt was like honey spread across his back. It was musky and smelled of wolf.
He gave her a wink.
"But there is.. something out here.."

Blue eyes widened. A skinwalker. Even though all the evidence for it fit she had a hard time believing what she saw before her. She had never met a skinwalker before and didn't think that tonight was when she was going to. She didn't know what to do. She had heard stories, terrible stories. She wondered if-
She didn't know what to do? What foolishness. She knew that she needed to treat each soquili with the same amount of respect, regardless of species. Tales were tales and she wouldn't judge a soquili based on... the cursed pelt on their back.
She locked her legs straight so that even in fear they wouldn't shake. She straightened and forced herself to meet those golden eyes. "Hello. My name is Avalokiteshvara. I hope that we meet in peace."

He looked at her, and watched her fidget. Looking to the ground with a bemused smirk on his face, he laughed slightly.
"Ah yes.. I come in peace.. and you leave in pieces. Does that work for you?"
He asked, walking closer, lifting his head up just enough to have it cast a shadow upon the curves in his face.
His golden honey eyes were of liquid, and he wondered why so many tried to befriend him.. He was evil.. His pelt was proof enough.. Yet every single one thought they could befriend him.
Ha.. He'd have fun with this one.

The poor thing. The curse must have warped his mind like this. He couldn't have started like it. It must be lonely, terribly lonely. Lonely and maddening. Her heart swelled with pity even as her heart pounded. Poor thing. He was threatening her with dismemberment but she still had compassion for him, compassion and fear.
"No, that doesn't work for me. I'd be glad to keep you company and speak with you but I'm not going to be killed." She was prepared to flee should he start carrying through on any threats. It wasn't too far away to Scythe. She could probably make it there in a sprint if her leg wasn't injured before she got there.
Poor thing. Probably always had people running from him. She wished she could help him and not die while doing it. She wished she could do anything in this situation, anything at all but make small talk and plan her escape.

He took an intake of air, almost as if he was hissing. A look of concern on his face as he shook his head, letting the pelt move about his body.
"Well this is an unfortunate event." He said, biting his bottom lip.
"See.. I came here, to hunt. To feed. On you really." He said, explaining calmly as if the situation at hand was not one he could control.. or really.. that he cared to.
He wasn't tormented anymore. He was free. The b*****d before him had been tormented indeed. But the curse, the curse had brought him forth, and given him the world.
He had once thought of such a curse as a bad thing. But one's 'curse' was anothers 'cure.'
He lifted a hoof, shaking it a bit as if preparing for strenuous activity. Like a runner stretches their legs before running.
"So.. Miss Long name.." He said, not really bothering to try and pronounce what she had said. He had become indifferent to the names of the meals he ate.
"You don't really think I would just want you to sneak around do you? Personally.. I prefer a little chase.. But if you're wanting to just stand there.."
His eyes looked dead into her blue ones.
"I can arrange something."

In Vara's life she had tried to help many soquili and even succeeded in a decent number of cases. She hadn't ever abandoned a soquili due to an unpleasant personality and had found that many were much more kind than their exterior habits or form would suggest.
She didn't think this was such a soquili. Somehow the way that he spoke his threats with such a calm tone made him all the more terrifying. She should have run when she first felt uneasy.
"I ask you as a plea from one soquili to another." It took all her will to say the words slowly and not garble them together in a rush. "Let me go peacefully and let us both go our separate ways. There is no reason that we both cannot exist in this world."
She wondered if she even could outrun this skinwalker stallion. It might be too late already.

He gave a soft grin. Almost kind if you oculd read past the malice in the grin.
"Begging now? Well this night just keeps getting better." He said nodding.
He wasn't normally one to attack and run. He generally liked to talk to his prey.. Scare the hell outta them before he did anything that could warrant any fear.
He was a predator. But he was a cunning murderer.. He didnt kill to eat most of the time either.. He just liked the feel of being the one to snuff out a line of possibilities.
"I kinda wanna play a bit. Do you like games, Long name?"
He asked, walking over to the side, blocking her means of escape, and looking at her from the corner of his eyes.
Molten lava eyes..
"I like games.. I especially like games that I win." He said, looking over at her and giving a snarl.

Om mani padme hum. Om mani padme hum. She repeated these words in her mind, her own personal calming chant. Om mani padme hum. She had always used them to help her concentrate but tonight she was using them for something else, to try to keep herself grounded enough to save her life. He couldn't help it. She had all the sympathy and compassion in the world for him but she didn't want to die.
She didn't want to die. There was too much to live for, now above all other times in her life. She was going to live. Om mani padme hum.
Though visibly frightened by his display an air of determination grew around the mare. She couldn't go back where she had come from but she could probably push through the bushes if she had to. Nothing was over yet.
"Some games were not meant to be played." Maybe there was something still in him that was soquili and not skinwalker. "Certainly.." She paused long enough to say her mental chant once more. "Certainly there must be something that you hold dear or have held dear in your life. If there is..." She lifted her head high and looked him in those terrifying eyes with a mixture of fear, pride, and compassion in her eyes. "Then you know why I cannot allow you to make a meal out of me."

'Now.. D'ya know why I dont think that way? Why I dont treasure anything, or hold anything dear?.. Cause then I'd be like you."
He snapped. His eyes growing dark and angry. He had been growing tired of the mind games, but her constant plea of life was getting drull.
His fangs gleamed as he glanced at her. Moving quickly to be sure she wouldn't escape from him, he grinned.
"Now, holding still, would be in your best interest, as it will be less painful.. Run? And I'll kill you slowly once I land my fangs on you. Which sounds more appropriate to you?"
He asked, not really wanting to chase anyone.. He was kinda tired tonight, but he would chase her, should she choose to run. He was offering her a painless escape.. Thats all she was going to get.

"I said that I wouldn't let you kill me!" One hoof stomped down with the force of her shout. She couldn't save him but she could save herself. She could force her way into the underbrush, yes. And then... Her mind raced ahead of the path that she knew her hooves would in just a moment. She had an idea, one that just might work. She was going to live. She had to. Om mani padme hum.
"I am sorry that I can't do anything for you and I hope that some day you will be able to find whatever salvation is possible for your kind." The pounding of her heart seemed almost deafening. She had to make a break for it now before he attacked her. She felt like she should say something before she gave into her adrenaline and bolted, some sort of farewell.
But she wouldn't. She wouldn't say a goodbye because she knew it wasn't over yet. Without another word her legs surged beneath her and she flung herself into the brier. Her legs kicked beneath her even as the thorns tore at them but she didn't stop and didn't look back. Any moment his fangs might sink into her flesh. Any moment now...
