Edit
Well, after a water change the bulge started residing and today [feb 05] she looks like she's back to normal.
Still don't know what it was, but whatever it was it seems to be over. biggrin

This week I've noticed a slight bulge on the right side of one of my goldfish.
Could someone help me diagnose?

Here's a picture:

I've always believed that goldfish can change color trough out their life, and my gold fish has been losing a lot of her color in the past two months, but now I'm worried that it may be related to the bulge at her side.

Also, I've always been meaning to ask, can a bend in the tail such as the goldfish at the bottom has, cause the fish problems?
She is the skinniest of the three.

It could be a bacterial infection but it's really hard to say. Fish can also develop warts, tumors, abscesses, etc. You could try using an antibiotic such as "Maracyn" or "Maracyn Two". They are both available at most fish stores. Change 25% of the water every week to help keep it stronger and keep it's water chemistry more consistent. All fish really need a 25% weekly change anyway. He will be better able to fight off diseases and infections that way too. Fresh water is the cheapest and best prevention and treatment there is.

Maybe it was the electric shock. Electric shocks will bend the goldfish's spine or most of the time kill them.
Another reason for the bent body could be that that goldfish was born deformed. I know, i recently had some butch baby goldfish. Some had spent spines, crooked mouths. Most of these died off by themselves.
If it is swimming upside down, it is most likely to be swimming bladder disease. Most with this disease would probably not make it but try feeding it duckweed or peas.
Water changes about 20% every other day might help which is to keep the water quality good. I suggest taking him or you going to your local fish store and ask. Medication might be able to help your fish.

Thank you Sweetange.
I'll do the water change tomorrow and check the petshop as soon as possible.
I'll keep you posted.

The one with the bent back (Betty) wasn't born like that though.
She developed it somewhere mid last year. We've had her for near 3 years now. I'm actually thinking it's because the aquarium's not large enough.
Though her swimming is wobbly, (much like the way a double tailed gold moves), she nor any of the other fish ever swim upside down.
I'd freak out if I caught one of my fish doing that. In my experience they're very close to death then.

I don't really feel like bringing my fish to the petstore since most of the employees there are kids working part time, or old bored ladies who chnge jobs every month or so.
I just don't trust the diagnosis of people who try to sell fish with ick saying that it's their color pattern. stare

Well, thank you again for the info, and I hope all goes well with your butch babies. smile
