Hey Guys Im new to teh guild and I thought I would ask a question as my first thread. Ive got around $400, and i would like a 120W amp. If anyone has any suggestions. Please Share. So far what I'm planning to get is an FW120 Crate Amp. But If you guys have anything better for the price, I would appriciate it. Thanks

I'd advise a spide III modeling amp. you'll have about 100 left ocer, and It's a nice amp for lots of clean and distorted tones.

What kind of music do you play?

I think Guitar Center's having a sale on Crate Palominos. Check out the V32.

Yeah the palominos don't look bad.

Stay FAR AWAY from the line 6 spider that other guy recommended.

I know the palomino isn't 120w but it's tube so it will sound immensely nicer. usually only cheap ss amps are made in 120w, and you should NEVER let the wattage determine what you buy. doubling the wattage usually only adds about 3db to the volume, if you want volume use more speakers (doubling speakers doubles volume). the crate is ss, so its going to actually be a pretty quiet 120w and its going to sound AWFUL when you turn it up really high.

if the palomino doesnt have enough gain for you, or you want to go with a modeler go with the vox valvetronix. the 50watt 2x12 is as loud as you will need for absolutely anything because anywhere that its not loud enough (like a stadium) you would have it on a mic so it would work fine plus its got a tube preamp so its entire range of volume is usable, unlike the crate.

What type of amp do you want for rock/metal, and you want quality, and don't care about volume?

Get yourself a Tube amp with your money. Buy a decent amp that has good response and believe me, there's plenty of volume with an amp over 15 watts. If you think you need 120 watts, you'd better be planning on playing a stadium or a football field. Otherwise you'll never get the dial up past 8 o'clock.
