i think i'm depressed but i'm not sure somebody help me..
PostPosted: Mon Aug 22, 2005 4:10 pm

Well I'm off my medication now but I'm not so sure I'm 'cured'. I don't think I really works like that but I know I'm happier then I was before. Some signs to my depression were:
-not hungry at all, I could go for days without eating and still not feel hungry
-weight loss, obviously from not eating
-general non-feeling, I wasn't really sad I just wasn't happy either
-non-coping, I wasn't able to deal with any stress at all it was just too overwhelming
-mood swings, when I did feel it would be very happy and then very sad in a short period of time

Keep in mind that this was just my experience. The hunger worried me the most. If you are worried then talk to your parents or if you are older talk to your doctor.

Give it at least a month or 2, and try to cheer up. Sometimes you may go through phases, last year I felt like complete s**t for a few months. I am pretty happy and fine now, it could just be your hormones or stress. It may or may not pass. Some people get to feeling depressed for a short while and start to actually live off of it, they like the thought of being depressed, it makes them feel special. You may feel depressed, but no matter what you need to try to be happy. If nothing works after a couple months or so go see a doctor about it.

Well, these are some of the symptoms I had:

-Change in appetite
-Loss of interest in activities I once liked
-Feeling of emptiness/hopelessness. I wasn't always sad and crying, but when I wasn't, I just felt empty.
-Social phobia
-Anxiety
-Restlessness
-Uncontrollable crying, even when I didn't know why. Most of the time, I didn't know why I was upset, I just was.
-Boredom, low energy
-Increased sensitivity
-Low self-esteem
-Irritability

Here's more

From webmd.com

Quote:
# Frequent sadness, tearfulness, and/or crying
# Hopelessness
# Decreased interest in activities or inability to enjoy previously favorite activities.
# Persistent boredom; low energy. "The hallmark of depression is this inability to have joy," Dolgan says. "There's this low energy, this shutting away, shutting down."
# Social isolation, poor communication. "A child given the opportunity to play with friends who prefers to be alone" may be depressed, Dolgan says.
# Low self-esteem and guilt. "The kids feel they're not good or not worth very much," Dolgan says. "I often ask, 'Are you important to somebody?' Depressed kids say no."
# Extreme sensitivity to rejection or failure
# Increased irritability, anger, or hostility
# Difficulty with relationships
# Frequent complaints of physical illnesses such as headaches and stomachaches. "A lot of these kids have physical illnesses for no real cause, especially stomachaches and headaches," Dolgan says.
# Frequent absences from school or poor performance in school.
# Poor concentration
# A major change in eating and/or sleeping patterns
# Talk of or efforts to run away from home
# Thoughts or expressions of suicide or self-destructive behavior

Sometimes it could just be hormones. If your symptoms don't go away after a while, talk to your parents. I was diagnosed with depression at 12 and recently diagnosed with 'serious depression.' I tried a few different medications and still go to therapy.

Depression is that, a hormonal imbalance. I can't remember which ones get out of whack, but it's to do with your body's chemical and hormonal balance.

Depression is very real. I believe that suicide is the #3 killer of teens. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Why would people pretend they have it if they don't? It's certainly NOT fun. That's just stupid and really attention-whorish.

Exactly. It is stupid and a grab for attention. But they don't know what it feels like so it's easy to pretend. I know that it is real and that it's not fun but it's also not worth killing yourself over because it can get better if you work for it.

A agree. With all 3 previous posts. Depression is a chemical imbalance. And it's really f***ed up when someone who knows they are not depressed pretend they are. Depression sucks.

I have to agree with all of you. I just recentley got stuck with depression when all my life I've been trying to avoid it, some people just want attention.

It's not something you can avoid. If you were trying to avoid it, but have it now it might not be a chemical imballance, but instead be psycological.

Depression isn't like alcoholism or being addicted to drugs. I wanted help. I was so desperate for it. I was on meds and was seeing a shrink every two weeks. It didn't help. The meds helped me a little, but for me talking to a professional did nothing. Other people maybe different, but that was how I felt.

Right now I'm not taking meds or seeing a shrink. I've known I've had depression since I was 13, but I probably had it for a while befor that. I'm now 19 and I can see all the signs of a major mood swing. I'm able to contol it until I can get somewhere by myself or let off steam.

About suicide, meds for depression increase suicidal thoughts. It especially happens in teenagers, that's why adds on the tv will tell you if young teens should be taking them or not. It's also why you should thouroughly understand depression so you can understand what are med induced feelings and what aren't.

For me, knowing my family understood what was happening to me, and me knowing they'd always be there is what's really saving me. There are days where I'd love to SI or beat the crap out of someone, but knowing I have support helps. I know I'm extremely lucky. Not everyone has that.
