Welcome to the original birthplace of Salome This journal is maintained by TawnyAngel Height: 15h 3" Salome's Stats Skill level: 60Power: 8 pts Strength: 7 pts Intelligence: 11 pts Wisdom: 7 pts Courage: 7 pts Luck: 6 pts Speed: 14 pts Agility: 14 pts Adaptability: 9 pts Stamina: 12 pts
Personality: Salome is an unstable mare suffering from hallucinations, paranoia and delusions. As she has grown older, these things have taken over her mind and essentially she lives in her own world which brushes against the real world only by coincidence. This said, she is seldom actually dangerous. If her paranoia tells her that somebody is trying to harm her, she is far more likely to flee than to use her vicious horn and tail blades to beat them off.
Location: Pretty much anywhere; she can be a bit oblivious to her location but she tends to stick to kinder regions
Salome's Tree is located in the Eastern Quadrant

Literally, schizophrenia means ‘split-mind’. However, when Eugen Bleuler coined the term in 1911 he was referring to the fragmentation of thought processes seen in the disorder - not to a ‘split-personality’. Schizophrenia is a class of disorder characterised by delusions, hallucinations, disorganised speech and the deterioration of adaptive (healthy) behaviour. Some symptoms of schizophrenic disorders are shared with mood disorders, the difference being that the core of Schizophrenia is disturbed thought rather than disturbed emotion. Prevalence estimates suggest that about 1% of the population may suffer from schizophrenic disorders. Central to schizophrenic disorders are cognitive defects and disturbed thought. Delusions are false beliefs, held by the sufferer though said delusions are clearly disconnected from reality. Delusions can range from belief that the affected person’s thoughts are being either broadcasted or influenced to the belief that they are an animal other than human with a malformed body. Some patients suffer from delusions of grandeur; they maintain that they are famous or especially important. The connection between thoughts also deteriorates in some schizophrenics. They may begin describing some wild fantasy but, after the first sentence, go off on a tangent and rattle off sentences that show no connection to one another, or even to the first sentence they uttered. Another important part of Schizophrenia is the deterioration of adaptive behaviour. Friends and family may observe that the sufferer ‘isn’t him/herself anymore’. They often lose the ability to carry out routine activities such as bathing and combing hair. The deterioration of behaviour can extend further; the person may no longer find themselves able to do their job and they often find it hard to maintain social interaction with friends and family. Part of the reason for these problems is change in emotional expression. Though it has been found to be little indicator of how the sufferer is actually feeling, many schizophrenics display ‘flatness of affect’. This means that they simply no longer display emotional responses. Another possible change is one to inappropriate response to a given situation, for example a patient might cry over a comedy whilst they might laugh at the story of a brutal murder. Yet another possibility is the development of extremely volatile tempers; over-reacting emotionally, often in unpredictable ways. Hallucinations are perhaps the best known feature of schizophrenia but it is not quite so widely known that they can be not only auditory (hearing) but visual, olfactory and tactile as well. Auditory hallucinations are the most common and suffers of schizophrenia often report that the voices give commentary on their behaviour, argue with their actions (perhaps tell them they don’t need to wash or change clothes,) or issue instructions such as telling them to prepare for alien visitation.

There are four subtypes of schizophrenia currently recognised by psychologists, one of these being a category for those who are clearly schizophrenic but do not fit into the other categories.
Paranoid type is characterised by delusions of persecution, and of grandeur. Sufferers believe that the world is out to get them and they may become suspicious of loved ones. They believe that they are always being watched and are being manipulated. To explain these delusions, they develop delusions of grandeur; surely if so many are against them they must be famous and or important.
Catatonic type involves distinctive motor disturbances. These can range from random muscle activity to rigidness. Some sufferers can go into a catatonic stupor; an extreme form of withdrawal where they seem oblivious to their environment and may remain utterly motionless. At the other end of the spectrum, some go into a state of catatonic excitement. Patients in this state are hyperactive and incoherent.
Disorganised type is characterised by an extremely severe decline in adaptive behaviours. Patients display emotional indifference, are often incoherent and social withdrawal is profound. They may babble or giggle without cause and their delusions focus on their body, for example they may believe that their brain is melting and coming out of their ears.
Undifferentiated type is the fourth category into with people who are clearly schizophrenic but cannot be diagnosed as any of the other types are placed. This type involves a mixture of symptoms from the categories, and is fairly common.
There has been criticism of the sub typing method of diagnosis as the catatonic type is becoming increasingly rare and that the last category is more leftovers than category.
The idea of positive and negative symptoms has been suggested to combat this. The words positive and negative do not in this case refer to good and bad. Positive symptoms of schizophrenia are additions or excesses to normal behaviour and include hallucinations and emotional overreaction. Negative symptoms on the other hand involve losses and deficits to normal behaviour and include social withdrawal and flatness of affect. According to this theory, patients would be classed as one or the other based on whether they showed predominantly negative or predominantly positive symptoms.
However, this has problems of it’s own as patients usually possess both positive and negative symptoms varying only in degree to which positive or negative symptoms dominate.
Although the distinction between positive and negative symptoms is useful it cannot replace sub typing. A better understanding of patients can perhaps be gained by combining the two outlooks together.

The tree
Tall for the age of its owner, spindly and of twisting trunk and limb. Bark is red, red as blood and mostly smooth. Mostly for jagged black spines run up the tree in a helix and over the red red branches in the same. The branches bear golden leaves that are like those of a pine tree. Neither they nor the spines fall in winter, the tree is never bare; one by one they fall to the ground and visitors to the tree should be wary of the ground nearby lest they find one of those curving jagged spines with hoof or foot or paw.
Sometimes red roses will spring up on the tree. This does not happen often, does not have a pattern but when it does happen these roses spring forth from the spines. Sharp blackness opens like a bud and, for a time, the tree gives of a beautiful scent and is pleasing to the eye. Before long however the roses wither and fall, pushed aside by new black spines which soon cover the tree with their sharpness once more.
The mare
Salome suffers from Paranoid type Schizophrenia. She has frequent hallucinations affecting all of her senses, and to explain her firmly held belief that the world is out to get her she has come to believe that she is capable of performing magic. She is very confused when other people can’t see its effects, and hasn’t considered for a moment that the world might be out to get her because she’s a crossbreed.
She moves around rather too much to make solid relationships, and might well end up believing that any friends she did make wanted her dead in the end anyway, causing her to either run away or try to drive them off. Another problem she has with relationships is her occasionally volatile nature. Though unlikely to actually harm anyone in these sudden tempers (as often as not she will try to use magic she does not possess to attack) which seem to be sparked by nothing at all, she is an intimidating sight when angry. Most that see one of these rages do their best to avoid her in future.
Salome often over reacts to emotions other than anger as well, becoming ridiculously grateful to somebody who said one kind word to her, or bursting into tears over being startled by a fly.
All in all, she is a difficult person to deal with, and very few Nequus have ever tried to do so for more than one chance encounter. It is unlikely that many, if any, ever will.

Salome's aquaintences Annabelle - Salome’s best friend. She doesn’t actually exist, but Salome doesn’t know that so it’s probably alright. Elsie - Salome likes this mare; she was kind to her and told her a story. She hopes to see her again some day. The Triplets - Salome likes two of them and is wary of the third. Their names confused her a little however and she can't remember what they were all called; she does remember however that they all had 'Xeno' at the start and that one was a girl's name. Eira, Morthan and Naveen - Salome likes these three, and the adults' four foals. She hopes to get to see them all again at some point. Aïdoneus - Salomé likes this stallion, and is very grateful for being so helpful when she first arrived in the land of the chosen, as she calls the Hellene territories. Diego - Salomé is neutral towards Diego; she has been convinced that he’s on the good side, but she’s aware that he doesn’t like her, and so she plans to avoid him in future. Spyke - Salomé likes Spyke, but is aware that he probably doesn’t like her given she beat him up when she thought he was siding with a demon. She’s a little sad that she won’t get the chance to talk to him much anymore, as she wanted to ask him about the moons. Ignatius Salomé likes this strange Reya and also thinks he’s a very good person for not becoming a demon like (she believes) his mother was. She counts him as a close friend.Sanue Salomé likes this Jala, but remains cautious of him until she can affirm with Ignatius that he isn't a demon.

Salome's encounters Midnight snacks - Salome met a mare called Elsie. They ate apples together, and talked about fruit. Elsie then told Salome the story of the Sand Nequus and the pair went to sleep. Grass and Paranoia - Salome encountered three Bae, one of which quickly left. She got on quite well with them and was gifted with a flower but before very long the departure of the third of their number combined with a strong hallucination made her twitchy, and she left in short order. The Product of Boredom - Salomé met an Ichsa colt named Spyke while looking up at one of the moons. Somehow, she connected his white horn to said moon and decided that he must live there. She did her best to find things out about the moons, and the colt played along out of fear. Before long he spotted an opportunity to leave and did so. Salomé then left to find Anna and tell her about ‘the moon boy’. The Dimming of the Day - Salomé found herself approached by a small crossbreed foal asking for help with keeping a tree’s parents fed. Only too pleased to offer her aid to one of her own kind, Salomé agreed and saw the tree from sapling to the hatching of its four crossbreed fruits. Land of the Chosen - Salomé found herself in a place where her kind are accepted and was only too keen to join their ranks and their army, the army of the Chosen, or of the Hellene to anyone else. Chasing Demons - Salomé chased a ‘demon’ (Diego) and got into a fight with it and Spyke, when the small Ichsa wouldn’t back down. Fortunately before she could kill them, Ignatius arrived and convinced her that Diego is a double agent, and therefore an ally. Just a little bit different - Salomé met Sanue of the alpha force. Anna told her to destroy him as he looked like a monster, but she refused given that she knows a couple of people now who look like monsters but fight for the Chosen. In the end she decided to ask Ignatius about him, as the odd Jala claimed to know her friend.

The fourth day
I don’t understand why I’m by myself. I broke out of my fruit three nights ago and even then I felt that something was wrong, that something was missing. I have had a chance to look around now and I know what it is; parents. There are other trees around with foals and all of those have grown up Nequus with them, usually two but sometimes one. I don’t even have one. Does this mean somebody somewhere has three or four to make up for me or did my parents just vanish?

The tenth day
I’ve found out that other things are different about me now. A grownup with leather wings wouldn’t let me talk to her children because she said I was a crossbreed. I asked her what that meant and she explained it to me. There are five true and good kins in our world; the Bae with wings like a butterfly, the Jala with wings like a bird, the Aeri with leather wings, the Reya with a curving horn leather wings and many muscled tails and finally the Ichsa with tendril wings and a long straight horn.
I’m not any of those, though I suppose I must be a mix of Reya and Jala from what I’ve heard. I don’t think I’m even right for that though; my horn has too many spikes on it for a normal Reya’s and my tails have sharp tips that cut me when I try to swat a fly away.
The Aeri mare made me go away after that and I haven’t been able to make any friends for very long. As soon as parents see me they make me leave. They almost seem to think that I’m not just wrong but dangerous too. They think I’m going to hurt their foals but I’m not. It’s not easy being a crossbreed, I suppose. Maybe I’ll meet more like me someday and then I can be friends with them and we won’t care what anyone else says.

Probably the second month
I’ve decided to leave my tree now; I’ve heard some of the families living near me talk about a place called D’ob. It sounds nice there but I must remember not to eat too much of the grass or it will make me ill, that’s what the Bae stallion was telling his three fillies. Maybe in D’ob there will be somebody a bit like me, that would be nice.

Not quite sure anymore
I’ve arrived in D’ob but I’m not sure I like it here. Everybody stares at me and everybody pushes me away from them. I think they can hear me, hear me think and it makes them angry. They want to hurt me because they don’t like that I’m thinking about being friends with their little ones and eating the nice things they’re eating. I’ll have to think very quietly so they don’t hear me and don’t get angry with me.

The best day ever!
Finally! I’ve made a friend. She’s a crossbreed just like me. Well not just like me, she’s Aeri and Ichsa and she’s very pretty. She’s all pretty and dark green with black legs and wings and horn and hooves but her mane and tail and her eyes are silver. Her name is Annabelle and she doesn’t have any parents either. She and I are always going to be friends and we’ll look after each other.

The day I found out more about Anna
I’ve talked to Annabelle a lot today and decided to call her Anna most of the time. Best of all the things I’ve found out about her is that she’s even more like me than I thought! She agrees that people can probably see into my head and tells me they can hers too but more than mine so she can’t be around other people and has to leave when they arrive because they’d hurt her.
I don’t mind, she’s promised she’ll always come back when we’re alone again. I love Annabelle; she’s like my sister and we’re always going to be friends for ever and ever and ever.

Strange day
I cut myself with my tails again today and when I did Annabelle told me to roll on the ground and see what happened. I thought it was a bit of a silly thing to say but Anna is my friend and my love-sister and so I did it.
When I stood up and looked around, everywhere my blood had got on the grass there were pretty red flowers. I smelled them and they smelled very nice. Anna tells me that this makes me special and it must; I have magic flower growing blood; goodness knows what else I might end up being able to do as I get older.
