Green grass colored tipped paws padded slightly exploring the oasis that he had been born in. He hated the sand around him because it wasn't solid like ground was supposed to be but there was nothing else to do since his mother was out hunting or whatever so he was exploring. Needless to say he hadn't found anything new, all he had found was sand and more sand. How productive.
Not.
Heaving a heavy sigh the ashen colored cub picked up his pace telling himself that if he didn't find something in the next five minutes or so he would turn around and find one of his siblings or he would return to the room of furs to take a nap or something.
Honestly he couldn't wait to leave this place. It reeked of blood and it was full of sand. Oh how he hated those loose grains of sand. Hopefully they would be leaving soon. Tama had told them that they would be, or she told the trees without meaning to and they told him.
Suddenly the cub came to a halt his draw dropping rather comically to anyone that might have been watching. Before him seemingly sprouting right out of the ground was a group of black stone pillars, some standing straight up, some resting on the other. They were simply amazing and he was astonished to see how they seemed to defy gravity in ways that trees couldn't.
"Wow...."

Safikunja was in her favorite place, atop the highest rock she could find in the Oasis, her face stuck in the wind. By why shouldn't she? As far as she was concerned, she was the daughter of the goddess of the wind placed with Tama to be raised while her mother did her job. Lions didn't have DNA testing and neither did humans back in the early 20th century so the only one who could prove her wrong was in fact her real mother, Zagaa'Tamanio. But safi was also convinced that Tama had had a cub who looked almost like her but had died at birth and the goddess had swapped them so that Tama wouldn't be sad. Safikunja was in for a rude awakening ...at least eventually.
She got a good whiff of brother. Curious, she hoped off of the large rock and bounded in his direction. Down lower to the ground, it was harder for her to identify scents so she had to judge blindly which way to go to find him. She saw the black pillars before she saw her brother. "Majivu!" she called running up to her brother. "Those don't look safe."

Majivu's ears flickered with his sisters words as he turned his head towards her tilting it. "Look at these...these...things!" Was all the cub could manage to say. He was so in awe of the sight before him that he was rendered speechless and since he couldn't find the words to describe the towering figures before him he had to touch them. He raced forward to the closest one, one of the ones standing up straight and tall.
Once he was beside the shiny smooth black surface he touched his paw flat against it before lifting another paw and pushing his weight heavily into it only to see that it wouldn't budge not one inch. A frown settling upon his features he furrowed his brow and stepped back looking it up and down.
"Hey Safikunja," he began his voice hoarse sounding as though he hadn't spoken for ages. "What you do you think these are? They aren't trees or apart of the earth cause if they were I could hear their whispers and they aren't whispering anything to me..." Majivu told her wrinkling his nose as he looked over at her again.
Majivu believed that he was blessed by the goddess of the earth to be able to hear the words and thoughts of her creations, such as trees. Ah yes, such an odd little family.

The black things before them were monstrous to her eyes. They looked like a parasite, dark and evil, that had latched onto their precious earth. If only she could talk to her mother, she was sure her mother could cook up a wind strong enough to remove those scars.
But her brother's fascination seemed just the opposite. He appeared amazed and awed by them. Well he may be blessed by a goddess but she was the daughter of one. She couldn't expect every mortal to be as conscious about things as she was. Reluctantly she followed behind him and in turn touched them. Later on, she would swear they had an evil power to them. For the moment she touched them, their surface cool compared to the hot desert air, she was in awe.
She wrinkled her brow at her brother's question trying to come up with an insult for them. Instead all she could come up with was "I don't know..." as she looked all the way up at the tops of them, her neck craned as far as it could go.

Suddenly curiousity gripped him and he ran to one that was leaning upon one that was standing up straight and tall. "I wonder if this is climbable." He mumbled pushing himself onto his hind legs as he attempted to latch himself to a part that wasn't too high of the ground. Managing a somewhat stable grip he pulled himself onto the shiny black rock. Panting heavily he glanced back at his sister beaming. "Wow! This is cool!" He exclaimed before taking an uncertain step forward on it's surface unsure if he could make it to the top without sliding back.
Inhaling deeply he decided it was worth a shot. "I'm gonna make it to the top!" He declared puffing his chest out before stepping back and then bursting forward in a run.

Safi furrowed her brow that her brother went against what she believed to be right. The pillars weren't right so they shouldn't touch them. What was he doing? What if he fell or their mother caught them? They could get in a lot of trouble. Right? Because as far as she was concerned they should.
But then he was climbing and her focus was more on why did he think it was so cool. Before she knew it, she was climbing after him, exhausting herself to catch up. "Slow down~!" she said trying to catch up.

A ring of laughter escaped the ashen colored cub as he glanced back at his dark colored sister. "No way, if I slow down I'll lose my momentum and slip!" He cried cheerfully turning his head back so he could focus all of his attention on the tip of the rock. Unfortunately all he caught was his paw sliding off of the pillar's surface and onto the air. Blinking eyes wide with fear his other paw scrambled about trying to find purchase only to find nothing on that smooth stone.
His other paw joined him as gravity worked it's magic on him pulling him downward toward the hard ground. Instinctively he squeezed his eyes tightly bitting down so harshly on his bottom lip it actually brought blood. Sweet gods please let the earth's plants rise up and save me. He pleaded silently just waiting for the inevitable crash.

Safikunja charged up after her brother although she was not having as much luck as he, slipping and sliding. So she was no where near his height when he fell before her. Her mouth formed a large "O" and she released a scream. Quickly, she climbed down, nearly bashing her chin when she accidentally fell onto the pillars. She ran over to him but clearly it was too late to even think of that. Look what had happened! Blessed by a goddess wasn't the same as being the daughter of one. He just didn't have a powerful enough bond to save him from falling.
Knocking her prejudice out of her mind, she nudged him. Maji, Maji! You ok? Get up!" she said, worry laden in her voice.

Despite the fact his fall had been from rather high the pain wasn't as immense as it should have been. A smile formed upon his lips with a wince as he opened his eyes. The gods had heard his plea and softened up the ground for his landing. Letting a groan escape his maw he flicked his tongue out having tasted blood. "It's okay Safi...it's okay." He mumbled groggily as he attempted to roll over and onto his paws.
"The earth saved me from most of the pain," he explained as he lay on his stomach, head still spinning from the after effect of his fall. "Next time I try that I'm not gonna fall and I'll be bigger..." He said aloud although he was speaking more to himself than to his dark sibling. Once more his tongue shot out over his bottom lip cleaning up the blood while trying to stop it's flow.
"Don't tell mom okay?"

Safi nodded. "If Wind was here, she would have saved you from even hitting the ground," she said with pride. "I won't tell Mama. She doesn't need to worry about us. Plus one day we'll be big and strong and protect her ourselves." Since Safi was the daughter of a goddess and all. "And I don't you should try. It's rather high, you know. Well unless you could run REALLY fast I guess." It was true she cared for her siblings but she liked to channel it into a sort of "it's my job to protect you" way. It was as if she was trying to keep herself from admitting she loved them as a family which would threaten her belief of her inheritance by dissolving it into unnecessary to consider.

A cough escaped his maw strangled by his attempt to suppress it. Although the young cub hid it rather well the fall had hurt him pretty bad, the coughing was just a little taste of the truth. Another cough spilled from his mouth followed by a string of others each a bit worse than the other. Lifting a paw he pressed it to his maw trying to stop and hide his coughs. While his body was hunched over because of it his eyes darted to his sister. "Maybe..." Cough, cough "Wind could have but..." Cough, cough "But it can't be helped now." Majivu barely managed to get out.
Eventually his coughing fit stilled and he stood tongue running over his lip to find the bleeding had stopped but the blood had stained his lower jaw. He'd have to make sure to clean himself before returning to the den. "One day I'll be able to do it." He declared tilting his head back. "One day I'll be able to climb it without falling...."
White ears had flickered at the piercing scream that rang out across the oasis. Fear shuddered through the green striped female's body as ceased what she was doing immediately turning ears perked. Standing still for a split second Zagaa'tamanio had broke out into a run towards the scream that faintly echoed still. The young mother's heart was pounding heavily in her chest as she pushed herself harder while the last reaches of the scream were still audible.
However Tama had an incredibly strong feeling of where her child, or children could be at that would result in a scream. The stone pillars. The ones that her father and the seemingly heartless female Koka had trained. That area was unsafe, but it was also far from the den so the female thought she had nothing to worry about.
She had been wrong. So very very wrong. She could feel it.
Upon reaching the clearing that lead to the pillars she slowed slightly body on high alert. When she emerged from the trees and spotted not one but two of her children, one with blood on their chin she narrowed her eyes, not necessarily in anger but that stern looks mothers got with their kids did something wrong.
"Safikunja, tell me why does your brother have blood on his lip?"

Her eyebrows darted upward as he began to cough. Not being entirely familiar with falls - at least not ones to be highly concerned about - she wasn't quite sure what the coughing meant or even if it was the fall that had caused them. Having never heard much coughing in her life, it still concerned her. It did not sound normal nor did it look pleasant. She inched forward, trying to think of a way to make it better. Her mind's only focus was to try and stop it. Of course in her mind, she was also thinking that if he was smart he wouldn't ever climb them again. But her slow movements weren't successful in procuring any remedy as she never made it quite so close to his side before their mother burst onto the scene.
At their mother's question, Safi's eyes turned to look at Majivu, her face becoming coolly smug - a look of almost superiority that children often get when tattling. But she had promised that she wouldn't tell Mama. And yet, they hadn't agreed on what the story was which gave her the ability to make one up. She sought for a story that at least gave her some glory. "We were playing around and then he broke into a run, claiming he could run faster than me. However, as we ran, he looked back to taunt me. Of course, I wasn't behind him because I'm amazing. But well as he was looking for me behind him, I was in front of him and noticed where he was running, looking back myself. I called out to him but he didn't turn around in time and bonked right into that pillar. But it's ok. I don't think he's hurt that badly." Safikunja nodded confidently at the end of her story, channeling her feelings of success towards that of a cocky victor rather than one who had just magnificently covered for her brother.
