The big wild dog had managed to bring down a substantial worthog on his own and now he was dragging the beast back towards the den and his gravid mate. Of course as he padded along dragging the beast of his burden he pondered how many pups they would have. Either there were few and they were large or many and they were small. Many pups meant lots of hard work for the both of them and he knew that Bem would probably be exhausted after giving birth. He would have to pull up his 'socks' and get on with it. Bem would always be worth the hastle.
Wagging his tail as he neared the cave mouth he smiled and dropped the large boar giving a yip and lowering his head. He remembered someone once told him, never walk in on a pregnant female without giving warning, you might just get your head bitten off, literally! He waited quietly for Bem to emerge a glimmer in those golden eyes.

As if summoned, Bem appeared, moving slowly. The grey femme was sporting an enormous belly, and moved as such both to protect the occupants, as well as the fact she couldn't move any other way.
She eyed 'Ratio grumpily.
"That took a while," she snapped. She knew that was unworthy of her, but her conscious was too tired lately to function properly.
Her gaze fell on the large boar and her tired eyes lightened somewhat. She offered 'Ratio a weary, apologetic smile.
"Sorry, love. Had I known you were bringing something that large, I wouldn't have said that."
That wasn't exactly true. She had become quite a grouch recently, subjects to bouts of moodiness, often accompanied by unprovoked verbal attacks at the amazingly patient white male. She couldn't tell if her belly contained a few HUGE pups, or many small ones. Either way, they tired her often.
She glanced back at her mate.
"Dinner time?" she asked politely, trying to make up for her rudeness. She tried hard to keep the anticipation out of her voice. She was very hungry.

Horatio smiled gently, he always forgave Bem without her asking for forgiveness, he knew full well that she could not sleep well with the bulge of her stomach, she was tired and hungry and her hormones were all over the place. he didn't care she was careing for his pups in a way that he nevcer could.
Wagging his tail gently he gave her a soft nod "Eat, I can wait." He whispered moving to her sid slightly to admire her. Despite the fact that she was grouchy and snappy, all but constantly, Horatio couldn't help but admire her still. he felt she glowed with radience and he often wished to simply nose at her belly to feel the tiny souls within, souls only she could deliver safely in to the world.
He lowered his head to look at her stomach his ears flattening against his head in an almost meek manner a small whimper rolling over his lips. He was pleased she was doing so well, clearly she was carrying a large deal of weight around with her and he couldn't help but admire her courage, she was a first time mother after all and hefting around such a tremendous weight had to be a trouble for her.
"You look wonderful today." He coos his golden eyed gaze shifting to look at her face instead of at the swelled belly which he so longliy wanted to nose at, just to feel their babies within. "Radient, I don't think you've ever looked more beautiful." he smiles laying down in the dust to wait for her to finish her meal, he could wait for as long as it took for her to finish, her meal was far mor eimportant than his own.

Bem loved him for his kind words, but one of them was the one she really wanted to hear. Eat. And so she did. She just about attacked the boar, wolfing down a few bites before slowing. She didn't want to make herself sick. She smiled up at Horatio, her eyes shining.
"You're so perfect," she said, almost in tears. Normally she would have snorted with laughter at the 'radiant' comment. She was far from radiant. Her belly was enormous, her eyes dark from lack of sleep, and her hair unkempt. She was probably covered in blood now too. And yet, instead of the laughter, her hormones were making her really emotional.
I don't know how I deserve you."
She finished eating, a portion by far larger than she would have normally eaten. There was still plenty left for 'Ratio. It was a huge boar. She smiled again at Horatio, whose gaze was on her stomach. She smiled to herself as she settled herself down nearby. She was still tired, still a little too warm, but at least she had eaten.
A sharp kick on her insides made her sit up with a huff. She glared at her belly.
"Now honestly," she said, scolding the pups she held.
"I just ate. Is that any way to treat your mother?"

Horatio chuckled lightly his gilden eyes shimmering in the sunlight. He let Bem eat keeping his silence as she wolfed down her portion. He couldn't blame her, she was eating for a fairly substantial party which kicked and moved in her ample stomach.
Looking at the boar he skipped going straight for it and went to bem instead licking at her muzzle and cleaning away the blood. "What you are doing for the both of us is far more wonderful than anything I could ever do for you Bem." He smiled and continued to lap at her maw until all the blood was gone from her face at least.
Settling he looked at her stomach and his ears perckefd forwards when her stomach lashed out at the world. The were certainly active today. A little moan escaped his maw and his tail wagged avidly behind him as he watched her belly with intence concentration. "Can I feel them Bem?" He whispers an ounce of uncertainty in his voice somehtign that didn't often happen in the confident voice of the pale male.

Bem was surprised at his question. Not the words themselves, she had seen him looking at her stomach often. It was how he had said them. That air of uncertainty lent Horatio a.... cuteness that she hadn't seen before. It melted her heart.
She nuzzled him.
"Of course you can, love. After all, they wouldn't be here without you."
Another sharp kick made her grimace, but it slid into a grin. It hadn't hurt that much. She was just going to birth some very active pups. She rolled onto her side, laying her head on the cool stone. She closed her eyes, the cool rock felt good beneath her warm brow. She huffed an errant curl out of her eyes.
She glanced up at Horatio, inviting him to feel her massive belly.

The big male dog smiled his tail wagging happily, his tail always gave away how pleased he was it was a part of him that he couldn't really control. Respricating the nuzzle he lay on his belly and shuffled towards his silver lady.
A pleased smile raised on his pale lips as his nose touched her distended stomach. He chuckled quietly his ears perking forwards and his golden eyes dancing over her extencive bulge. "Hello pups." he whispers his voice calm though it whispered with a careing caress that the lilac marked male only used on those special occasions. "Calm yourselves now and let your mother get some rest hmm?" He let a gentle laugh roll over his lips his golden eyes looking lovingly at that distended bulk.
"You truely look wonderful Bem." He turned his gaze upwards and he lapped once over her stomach. "You are looking after our little ones so well."

Bem giggled, unable to help herself. It was touching to see her calm, serious Horatio so excited. It warmed her heart. She couldn't wait to have these pups. She wanted to see them, feel them, mother them. And she'd also be happy to have her belly back.
She smiled up at her mate.
"Now that they've heard from their dad, perhaps they'll settle down," she said, her voice full of mirth.
"And I'm happy to carry them. It is a privilege and a joy."
She yawned and gave another chuckle.
"And just a bit tiring."

Horatio grinned sheepishly watching his silvery grey mate with loving eyes, he was so proud of his Bem, she was so exhausted from the whole process of carrying these pups. "I'm sure they will come soon love." He whispers as if he could hear her thoughts and wished to comfort her questions.
"You can't possibly hold them forever no matter how wonderful it makes you look." He grinned playfully and crawled along the ground to nuzzle at her muzzle."You've never looked more beautiful." He whispers. "It's such a burden I have put upon you but I doubt there is a happier wild dog in the world that feels as privalged as I to have you bareing our pups." He smiled an onest look on that serious face his tail wagging in the dust just to confirm the pleased feeling he had despite his somewhat monotone voice.

Bem was indeed exhausted, but, given the choice, she would have done it again. She loved the idea that she and Horatio were creating something wonderful. Somethings wonderful.
She nuzzled Horatio.
"I know they will, and I have to say, I'm looking forward to them being out here. Though they are very easy to keep track of at the moment," she joked, her tired eyes glimmering with mirth.
She yawned and carefully stretched her body, returning to a sitting position. She looked straight into 'Ratio's eyes, wanting him to know that she was completely serious.
"And it is no burden. I never have seen it as a burden. Tiring, yes, but never a burden. It is an honor and a joy, and etc...."
She trailed off as she stifled another yawn.
"Speaking of tiring, I believe it is time for a nap, my dears," she addressed both her pups and her mate.

Nodding to his silvery mate the pale wild dog nudged at her cheek gently. "Yes you should get your rest, all of you." he chuckled softly glancing at her belly once again, he was so happy, pleased that bem did not feel burdened by the pups she carried.
"I'm sure they will soon be running us ragged." He chuckled, "go, get some sleep love, give me a call if you need anything." he settled in the shade of the rocks above not yet going to take a bite from the haf eaten carcass, he didn't acctually need to eat yet and was happy to leave it for later knowing Bem would undoubtedly be hungry again when she woke form her nap.
He turned his head to smile at his silvery mate, time would roll around quickly he knew and they would soon be chasing after a gaggle of puppies, perhaps if he knew how many would be born he wouldn't have felt so relaxed about bem giving birth. All thoughts rolled fom his mind though as he settled quietly to watch over the den.

Bem watched as Horatio settled down to keep a protective eye over all of them. She couldn't help but feel safe with him there. Glancing back down at her large belly, she smiled again. Her eyelids were beginning to feel heavier and heavier. It was very draining, carrying and feeding several other bodies inside of her.
Heaving another big yawn, she settled back down slowly until she was reclining on her side. The stone beneath her was slightly cool and felt wonderful. After one final smile at Horatio, she let her head rest on the stone and drifted off to sleep, dreaming, no doubt of the family she was about to have.
