Could've swore we had a Lateralus thread. Anyhow, all praising, alternate track listing theories etc should go in here.

Just giving my Lateralus CD another listen after a few years, as opposed to mp3s, and it still has the same excellence after all of these years. It's amazing that they packed all of that within the CD's length limitations and even with HDCD included. It's funny, because compared to every other Tool album, this is the only one where I don't end up skipping any tracks or just letting them play in the background while I tune them out.

I listen to Lateralus so much, that the second CD I bought is now scratchy and needs replacing.

And I'll probably do it too.

It's my favourite so far, and likely will be. I think that so many of the songs just reach a level of technical and musical perfection. The entire album can make me feel such a massive range of emotions, it's really quite bizarre.

Yeah, I have to buy another copy soon. It's the only CD in my collection that's needed replacing simply from being played so often and just over a period of 3 years. Still my favorite Tool album as well.

Wish the title track had a music video to accompany it, because other than the actual music, I found the lyrics to be some of the most interesting ones on the entire album.

The Lateralus-Fibonacci thing still blows my mind, more so as I look into it. When I was a junior in high school we read a poem called The Chambered Nautilus, which I recently found to share similarities with the song Lateralus, the primary one being that a chambered nautilus IS a spiral...

Year after year beheld the silent toil
That spread his lustrous coil;
Still, as the spiral grew,
He left the past year's dwelling for the new,
Stole with soft step its shining archway through,
Built up its idle door,
Stretched in his last-found home, and knew the old no more.

And doing research on spirals in general, I came across this site that's about Divine Proportions...

Quote:
The 17th century mathematician Jakob Bernoulli named the figure at right the Spira mirabilis or "miraculous spiral" and assigned it the following motto: "Eadem mutato resurgo" ("although changed, I rise again the same").

I found that phrase, "Although changed, I rise again the same," to remind me very closely of "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human," to grow and change but still truly be yourself.

WOW I rambled, huh? I think about this stuff too much 3nodding

Hahaha, but it was interesting. It was kind of funny, because when I heard Lateralus, I really loved the music, lyrics and the artwork, but I never really delved into what the meanings or concepts were about. Hell, I think the only thing I found through a brief glance was the word "GOD" in the character's brain.

So to go back through and really explore the fibonacci sequence and lyrical meanings, it was amazing. The only other album that I've really explored as much, is The Downward Spiral, which, while being on the opposite end of the spectrum from Lateralus, as being completely depressing, is funny since it involves a spiral too. I thought it was neat that two of my favorite bands both have spiral-related albums, which I consider to be the best of both of their works and yet one is extremely depressing, while the other is pretty enlightening.

sweatdrop

I'm currently trying to develop a tattoo concept that uses "spiral out" vs. "downward spiral."

Really? :D Gotta admit, I'm pretty curious now.

It's really nothing that interesting, and from what I've heard from artists, not particularly possible. I wanted to have a small spiral, the line of the spiral being compromised of lyrics, and I wanted it on the inside of my arm, right below my elbow. And on the other arm, another spiral, but this one pointing downward, with different lyrics.

But doing text that small is really difficult, so I don't know if I'll be able to do it like I want...

No, that sounds awesome. I'm sure someone could do it, but the level of difficulty seems high. Initially I had another image in mind, which I might draw out just for my own entertainment.

That's all? Haha, personally I think Lateralus outshines Parabol(a). Would've made for a great music video too, but ah well.

You should show me when/if you do draw it out.

I did enjoy Parabol(a), I think it's beautiful, and Disposition can immediately calm me down.

Buuuuut Lateralus owns. 3nodding

I definitely will whenever I get a scanner or camera. Probably get a nice camera first, because I actually enjoy photography more than drawing.

I love Disposition, Reflection and Triad. Almost feels like a different album when Disposition starts playing ..and then Faaip de Oiad ruins it.

Lateralus is my favorite Tool album. It always manages to put me in a good mood and inspire my creativity. The song Lateralus just makes me want to enjoy life to the fullest. Schism and The Grudge are probably my favorite songs off the CD; sometimes they just give me shivers. I also think Parabola is pretty uplifting. This is some of the band's best work I think. I guess it was good that they separated for a bit while MJK was with APC.
