We all know the old adage, I'm sure.

I just can't help it. Whenever a book is getting it's own shiny display, or has an elaborate cover, I always think that the outside is trying to make up for the inside, and hope the book lives up to it's display. Have you ever read one of these hyped-up novels? What was your reaction?

My own story: The Alchemyst by Michael Scott had it's own display for awhile. I bought it, but still haven't finished it. Then Gaia came out with the items and I wondered just what made this one novel so wonderful. I suppose I'll have to read to rest to find out.

I must admit, I look if covers are a bit good, before I read a book, unless someone told me it was a good book.
I must say though, sometimes the cover isn't really about the book. I don't know an example at this moment, but sometimes I think the drawer didn't read the book properly.

I do judge a book by its cover more then a few times, idk I just like books with nice covers. I've regreted it more then once but I still do it. :/ I'm guilty oh well.

I will freely and gladly admit that I am a book-whore. I will read any book on any subject, and I will not only read it, I willl devoure it! I am yet to meet the book that I did not like. When it happens I am sure I will be mortified.

I came to the realisation a long time ago that covers do much to draw me in, but for the most part, the only thing I first pay attention to is the title. Shiny displays are great for grabbing my attention, but if the title doesn't interest me, I don't even pick it up. If the title catches my eye, however, I will read the back, and likely the first chapter before even reaching the checkout.

I can only recall one book that I read because the cover drew me in. It was Midnight for Charlie Bone, a 'young-teen' novel, that was surprisingly good. The cover was holographic... kind of hypnotizing. There's a whole series of which that is only the first, and I have indeed thought of completing my collection just because they look so good on the shelf. But even in this case, the title played an important part in my purchase, it just sounded so darn interesting.

The only thing I'm really concerned about when it comes to covers is whether or not they're embarassing. I can't stand cheesy romance covers with half nekkid men & women with their corsets falls off. I don't want to half to hide my book in shame when I'm out in public!

I agree I read a book that was really good (can't come up with the name) but it was really irritating I hid it most of the time I think it put down in a box at the moment (goes looking)

I really don't look at book covers much these days. When I was little I used to, but not any more. It's probably because I pick up a book with an interesting title, flip it over before even looking at the front and read that. If it's interesting I open it. I only get to know the cover at all when I happen to own a particular book, or take a long time to read it. Asside from the color of the book I honestly couldn't tell you much about the covers of most of the books I read.

After all, the most interesting part of a book is whats inside the cover.

I agree with everyone here! XD Titles pull me in, along with cover art. And it is the inside that matters. 3nodding

Not so much the covers as the... spine xd

When I'm looking for a new book to read I tend to walk down a random section of the library or bookstore and pick up the first book that catches my eye
It's rather hit and miss, but I've gotten some great books that way (some went on to be faverates whee )

I tend to gravitate to brightly-coloured books.
Can't help it.
I see and lime and hot pink spine and it's "Ooh, what's that..?"

Gah, I always - ALWAYS- gravitate toward some sort of displayed book that everyone is talking about. Then once I have read the inside or the back of the cover, it seems odd how people think some books are good, as to I think it's horrible. I mean, the plot might be good, but it's not written well. No matter, I gravitated toward some books that were really good, and had an awesome cover such as Perfect and Time Travelers Wife.

No matter though, I think everyone does it. biggrin

I have to agree with everyone that it's almost impossible to ignore something brightly colored. XD

well, i always read the summary when i'm attracted to a book before reading it, but i must admit that i don't go by cover as much as title. mainly because at the library, all of the books are turned to the side so all i see is the title. sadly, the summaries aren't always lead and i get some lame books.

The first thing I usually look at is the cover, then the title. The cover is more eyecatching, but if the title isn't interesting, at least a little, I probably won't even read the summary. But I don't buy books based on the cover. I buy them based on the summary, the first chapter, reccomendations, or if I love other books by the same author.

I'm kind of a visual person, so I am drawn to nice looking covers. But my aesthetic sense is weirder than most peoples. A lot of the time, I go into bookstores, and they'll have big displays set up for books. I'll look at the display for maybe two seconds, and then out of the corner of my eye I'll see this blindingly bright coulored cover that looks like someone blew up a neon paint factory, and I'll gravitate over towards that book.

I found one of my favorite books of all time, Scarlett Thomas' PopCo, because of one such incident.
