Seika stretched herself lazily in the branches of a pine tree that sprouted a few yards away from the tree line bordering the valley. The sun was setting, leaving a crimson streak that stained the skies above the mountains on the other side of the vast valley. Her tail dangled below, flicking back and forth as the last of the sunlight faded into pink and red, leaving the cool colors of the night to dye the sky. Her red and orange eyes hung half open and she yawned. It was time for her to rise and saunter about the night like she normally did.
She hopped down from the pine tree, her tail brushing its trunk as she left. She blinked and flicked her ears. She couldn't hear anything but the wind drifting through the trees, which she was padding further and further away from. Her claws flexed in and out of their sockets as she walked along. A part of her wanted to sleep more, but the other part told her to keep walking. Laziness was not a virtue, she knew that.
The full moon rose, beaming its cool, white rays of light and fog was settling in the valley. Seika cocked her head. It wasn’t natural for fog to settle just after sunset, was it? She flicked her tail with surprise. Oh well. She knew better than to trouble herself with these petty issues of life. She yawned again. It was going to be an uneventful night as always, or so she believed. The past few nights weren’t interesting. She wondered why she wasn’t like a normal, happy Ulaya that traveled during daytime when the sun was up. She sighed. Another petty issue of life . . .

Kuragari wandered along through the forest, instinctively keeping to the deepening shadows underneath the trees. He seemed to have been doing a lot of wandering, recently. That was what had first gotten him into trouble, when- No. No reason to think about that. And yet he couldn't seem to stop himself.
Suddenly he realized that he was no longer in the forest. At some point while he had been lost in thought, the trees had thinned out and disappeared, leaving a hollowed-out bowl. He was out in the open, right where any Ulaya could see! Part of the godling kit wanted someone else to see him, but he shoved it down mercilessly. Nothing good could ever come of it. Luckily the last vestiges of sunlight had already bled from the sky, and tendrils of - fog? - were beginning to fill the valley. For a second he wondered if his own need had somehow called it, but that was unlikely. At any rate, it would make the perfect cover.
Then he caught the flash of color up ahead. A bright, fiery orange was moving down the slope. Another Ulaya? He should turn back. But despite himself, Kuragari's curiosity overcame him and he stole forward, emboldened by the darkness and fog. It was indeed another Ulaya, much bigger than him and female, with horns and tail like his father's. What was she doing out at night like him? He followed her silently, taking advantage of every bush and depression and thankful for his dark coat. It never occurred to him that his eyes, which seemed to catch the scant light like a cat's and flash a brilliant ruby, would be just as much of a giveaway.

Seika's ears flicked as she heard the faintest of rustles behind her. Her tail wagged with interest and she turned around, her claws scuffing the ground in front of her, just in case this . . . being was a foe. She blinked and scanned the area. The fog was irritating her, making it slightly difficult to see. Her ears dropped slightly in defeat. It was probably just the wind.
Then, a red flash caught her attention and she blinked in surprise. A pair of gleaming red eyes were staring at her. She shuddered once and she didn't even know why. Some sort of force just made her. It was an involuntary action. She lowered her head to peer closer at the figure. It looked like an Ulaya pup, but she couldn't be sure. She crept closer, keeping her eyes fixed on its own red ones. "Hello?" She called out, her tone unlike its usual self. It was more . . . hesitant so to speak and she couldn't explain why.

Kuragari stiffened involuntarily as the Ulaya turned, willing himself to blend into the shadows. But it appeared it was already useless; after only a brief scan her eyes had unerringly settled on his own. From this close he could see she looked dangerous, with deadly fangs and claws, though the kit wasn't afraid. He never was.
He could still turn back and hope she would think she had been imagining it, but what if she tried to follow him back to his family? He doubted his parents would have a very warm reception for either of them. So, giving up the ghost, Kuragari stepped out of his hiding place. She had spotted him, after all, and it was only fair to let her see who - and what - he was. The small kit stood there regarding her curiously, somehow seeming at the same time both very young and old beyond his years.

Seika's tail flicked with surprise, her eyes blinking once. It was and Ulaya kit, but this one was different. This one was a god. Her tail coiled around her back leg, her head lowering to get a better look at him. Her claws tapped the ground as she examined him, her eyes carefully taking in everyone of his features. She nodded her head to him with recognition. There was something about this kit that made her feel . . . queezy and she didn't know what.

Kuragari nodded back to her and patiently bore her close scrutiny. It was still strange for him learning how to deal with mortals - he had enough trouble with his own family - and he wondered if it held true the other way around. Of course, his particular domain made it even harder... The chains wrapped around his front paws clinked as he shifted slightly, a soft warning, and he let the thought trail off into oblivion again. The Ulaya was still staring at him; was he supposed to do something? "What's your name?" he finally asked. His voice was soft but curiously flat, like a painting whose colors had been bled out.

Seika was a little surprised at the kid's tone, her tail loosened around her leg. She didn't think the kit was going to hurt her, but why was she so worried? It was as if this god unearthed her fear of being utterly helpless. That was her only fear . . . Well, she wasn't and idiot, for this was the God of Fear. She sighed. "Seika." She replied, her tone was the same as it usually was. "And you are?"

"Kuragari." He said it with a sort of quiet pride in who and what he was. His particular domain could be... difficult... sometimes, but he was a god and wouldn't have wanted anything less. "Are you afraid?" the godling asked with barely a hint of resignation in his voice, noting the slight uneasiness in her expression. Arawn and Lilith might enjoy toying with mortals, but he had never really understood that. In some ways, he was just as much of an outcast from his family as his misfit sister.

Seika shrugged. "Your aura at first was a bit ... overbearing ... But not so much now." She replied approaching him a bit more. The chains around his paws she took careful note of. "Do those ever bug you? Your chains?" She asked, interested in this god kit.

Was that the faintest suggestion of relief in his expression before it flickered back into its usual impassivity? No, it couldn't be. Such emotions were for mortals, not godkind.
He lifted a paw at her question, chains now making not a whisper of noise, and his unnervingly steady gaze flicked from them back to the other Ulaya again. "No more than your horns or tail ever bug you," he said. In some way he didn't fully understand, they were as much a part of him as that.

Seika looked back at her tail and flicked it, her horns gleaming in the moonlight. "I guess." She replied, shrugging. Her gaze averted back to Kuragari. "Do you come here often?" She asked, interest flickering in the back of her eyes.

He shook his head. "I've never been to the same place twice. I guess... I don't know, I wander a lot." He shrugged, one ear flicking. "You?" Why did he travel so much? If he just stayed with his brothers and sisters, he would certainly be less likely to have any more unfortunate encounters with mortals.

"I guess I'm a traveler as well." Seika agreed with an indifferent shrug. "Life's just slipping through my fingers as I don't seem to actually know how to grasp it and live it to it's fullest extent, which I'm probably going to regret." She explained with a dark chuckle. She tilted her head up to the moon, blinking as her eyes rested on its perfect form. "You gods on the other hand don't need to worry about things like a time limit on your life, but I think I'd get tired of living forever. I don't know, I guess I'm just like that."

Live life to its fullest extent... What did that mean? One was awake, and ate, and slept, and woke again only to sleep again. Was there supposed to be something more?
She was right. He had never thought of it that way before, but even as a kit part of him was already tired of the endless monotony of days with no prospect of what mortals called happiness. Maybe that was why he was a traveler. But to live a life measured in years, then days, and finally hours before meeting De'taila's embrace... "What is it like to die?" he asked, curious but not really expecting an answer.

Seika's eyes rolled back down to meet Kuragari's blood red gaze. She sighed, not knowing she could give him a real, valid answer to that. "Well, for that answer you'd have to ask someone who died." She chuckled grimly. "Because, well, I really don't know . . . I don't know if after you die, your soul goes to the underworld, spins in dark void forever with the other souls of the long departed or . . . I don't know. You just leave this world, and, well, you don't come back . . . I know that."
