ok...so last night my band director asked me to play mello with my friend chelsea. right? right. k well we were playing and i know same fingerings, mouthpiece...blah blah blah. but its like a 5th below the trumpet...and i'm used to trumpet music more than mello music. i was wondering if any you have experienced the want to play higher [if youve made a similar switch like this] while you played the other instrument that was in a lower key. I mean i loved playing mello...but ya think practicing might help me get used to it...but not mess up my trumpet playing at the same time?? and do you ever get used to it?

I'm a mellophone player who just started playing trumpet, lol. I've found, in the past week of playing it...I do want to play my horn higher than I should, but I think it will go away. Just try to keep your instruments straight, meaning don't play trumpet music on mello or vice versa. And I've noticed while playing trumpet that it's made for playing higher. The mello and the horn feel more comfortable when you play lower notes. The trumpet plays high notes easier. I don't know if this helps at all...but that's my experience so far.
