I've always enjoyed looking at some of my favorite comic book/manga artists for inspiration (Like Jhonen Vasquez and Clamp) Ooh, also I wouldn't just stick with simplicity all the time. Always strive to hit something just a slight bit harder than what you're used to. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! You know... All that sort of crap, you know?

What ever you see and can think of. Just draw it. And just draw every chance you get. And you should have no problem reaching your goal.
But if you want to make money but don't mind not getting a lot. Portraits of passerbys seem to be the way to go.
But if you want something like entertainment then probably backgrounds and characters. The entertainment way will get you a lot of money, most likely. But I'm no expert I'm just saying.

it really depends what your into, I'd say start drawing one or two of everything to figure out what you have the most fun doing, for me its drawing people, but I used to love doing animals and tattoos and shoes (can't forget those!)
