Modern Salem

Controlled by - The Autumn Court & The Ebon Noose (The Winter Court), Cooperative.

Salem (short for "Jerusalem") is 20 miles northeast of Boston, up along the coast. Many of the events of the American witch hunts that took place in the summer of 1692 actually took place in Salem Village, the site of modern Danvers. Salem revels in its reputation as "Witch City, USA," and capitalizes on that reputation every Halloween, as visitors converge from up and down the eastern seaboard to get a taste of the town's "spooky" ambiance.

Salem's reputation as a witch city is so well known that it spills over into the consciousness of the mortal inhabitants. They think nothing of Salem's several witchcraft shops and occasionally go in for a book or a few exotic herbs themselves. This pre-eminence of witches is aided by the presence of the Ebon Noose, a coven lead by The Winter Queen herself. There is an unquestionable concentration of would-be witches in the area, although the coven is composed mostly of changelings and talentless mortal wannabes than true Thaumaturges. Still, those that do come to power are usually already partially indoctrinated in the brand of magic promoted by the Ebon Noose. Traditionally, Salem is also the seat of power for the Autumn Court, owing to both its reputation as an Occult center and its historical significance to the Court, although Jacky Carroll spends as much time conducting business out of Boston as he does in Witch City.

Due to the large changeling community and the relatively small size of Salem, the changeling politics of Salem are unusually incestuous, with many different motleys, entitlements and factions competing for status and everyone knowing everyone else's business.

Resident NPCs - Shuck's Crew (Privateers. The motley makes its home in Danvers, but frequently extends its territory into modern Salem.)

Danvers (Salem Village)

Controlled by - Contested between the Scarecrow Ministry (The Autumn Court) and Ol' Shuck's Crew (Privateers)

Other Players - The Abbey of the Ravenous, The Midnight Circus (True Fae)

The town once known as Salem Village abuts modern Salem, and some say taints it. Danvers is best known for its lunatic asylum, which, although closed down in 1992, still remains a potent presence in the surrounding countryside. Autumn Court scholars and magi believe the high concentration of insanity, in conjunction with the permanent taint of the land by the Witch Trials, is what attracted the True Fae and made the asylum an entry to the Hedge.

Those who know the history of Samhain well know that Danvers was, and may still be, Others territory. Not long after it was established in 1878 patients from the asylum would occasionally go missing. At first such events were infrequent, not arousing much attention. Before long though, the incidents spread into the town, often accompanied by sightings of strangely dressed transients and gypsies.

Inevitably the missing returned, though not as they once were. Thoroughly broken by their experiences and having returned only at their Keepers' behests, these Changelings succeeded in turning Danvers into a Loyalist stronghold. The Autumn Court, which had long since reigned in Danvers due to its historical involvement with the witch trials, was pushed out to modern Salem.

There was a time when the loyalist Changelings of Danvers and their Keepers posed a serious threat to the Changelings of Salem, but that hasn't been the case since the mid-'90s. When the Asylum closed, the lack of an easy supply of souls weakened the Others' hold over the area. Eventually the Keepers grew bored with the never-ending stalemate between their followers and the Seasonal Courts, and withdrew. Without the aid of their benefactors, the local loyalists were driven nearly to extinction. The handful that survived scattered to the winds, or went underground entirely.

Today, as far as Changelings are concerned, Danvers is practically a ghost town. The trod that once connected to the Asylum seems to have withered without regular use, although such passage ways never close off for good. Under the direction of Belladonna, Winter Courtiers scour Danvers for any signs of Loyalists or returning Keepers, while the Scarecrow Ministers cultivate the town's reputation as a place to be avoided by any freedom loving Changeling.

Resident NPCs - Naomi Peterson (Hedge Witch, Custodian of the Danvers Historical Society), Shuck, Garm, Scissorman, Johnny Capp, Razor Molly, William "Pretty Bill" Turner (Shuck's Crew, Privateer Motley)

After a few weeks of settling in, Bree asks Stitch to take her to Salem proper to refill her herb stores. The two of them make a day of it, pausing for lunch at a small cafe and browsing through the various shops scattered around the village. The proprietors and merchants are glad to find that she knows her way around an herb pantry and isn't just shopping for charms or love philters, like most tourists. The concept of paper money still eludes her, but a line of credit is something she knows quite well and the little plastic card with Carroll's name on it proves quite useful.

They visit some of the witchcraft monuments and museums, which puzzle Bree to no end. She can't quite wrap her mind around a culture that despises magic so much that it would kill people even accused of being practitioners. She feels a little better after discovering the ergot-poisoning theory, but the whole experience leaves her a teensy bit rattled and she seems relieved when they head towards home again.

A beautiful sunset paints the sky in rainbow colors as the girls walk toward the train station, chatting idly about the effects of the various effects of the herbs Bree purchased that day.

"No, seriously. Motherwort and black cohosh. I've been taking it for years as a preventative. Works like a charm. And lady's mantle with a sprig of mint works wonders for those moon's-blood pains."

The shopkeepers were right, you do know your stuff. I'll have to try that. My... plumbing is kinda screwed up from when I was taken, but that doesn't stop the feeling something's gonna claw its way through my uterus every month. stare

*At the other end of the platform, watching as the girls make chit chat, is a leathery old man in his fifties, in a denim work shirt and jeans and a red baseball cap. To changeling eyes, his skin is an oily black and he has large eyes that reflect the light in a green glow. His face has a slight canine quality to it, and his shadow is that of a Doberman or Mastiff.* Which one of them was it, Bill? The brown haired one?

Aye, sir. I'd recognize her anywhere.

Hmm... She's not one of us. And she's not particularly frightening.

Though she be but little, she is fierce, Sir. sweatdrop

"Well, let me know when you're a few days prior and I'll make you some tea." She stares at the poster with the train routes, momentarily fascinated.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, she sees the reflection of a monstrous black dog in the large overhead mirror.

"Stitch...."

*Stitch blinks and follows Bree's gaze.* Holy s**t. *She casually casts her gaze around. Her hands remain at her side, though her fingers elongate and harden into stiletto like blades.* We're being watched.

Bree casually wraps strong fingers around Stitch's wrist and whispers, "'Shield.'"

"We need to move. I've run into the blond man before and he's trouble. I ******** up his buddy pretty good. Get me into a grove and we'll be safe."

*Stitch nods* Brandywine Park. It's about a five minute walk from here. It's fairly open, but there's a cluster of trees in the back. It's our best bet. Follow me, and try to look casual. Don't let on we've noticed them yet.

Bree nods and plasters on a casual, slightly witless smile. It's her favorite mask...and her most effective.

*Stitch puts on a show of chattering away, smiling and laughing with her friend. Shuck frowns.*

Why would they be leaving before their train gets in?

Maybe they decided it was a lovely day for a walk and decided to stay?

*Shuck glares at him.* Come. Let's follow them and see where they go.

I'm telling you man, that's a bad idea. That girl, she's trouble.

*Shuck grabs Bill by the ear and drags him along after the girls.*

Bree chatters right back in the most airheaded fashion, while her mind focuses on the surrounding trees. She only has one Vanish prepped and she's not willing to leave Stitch behind. Plenty of offensive spells on-hand this time, with enough Shields to give them time to run if need be.

And then....there's always the Warrior in her sleeve, so to speak.

Ow, ow, ow. Boss please, you don't understand! This girl laid Charlie out flat. He got electrocuted, burned, hit in the nuts, and got a concussion from when she cracked him in the head!

Look, they obviously haven't spotted us yet. Let's just turn around and leave them. Focus on getting that ritual from the Book -

*Shuck pulls out a pen knife and sticks it in Bill's mouth, threatening to cut open his cheek.* Do not mention that in public again. The others are taking care of that. Any mention of Harker, the Book, or the ritual again... We'll have to change your name to "Smiling Bill."

Bree squeezes Stitch's hand and leans in giggling as if to share a secret.

"Twenty more feet and run like hell for that grove."

*Stitch nods and giggles in reply, while behind them Shuck and Bill are on the move again and beginning to catch up. They hit the twenty foot mark, and Stitch takes off in a sprint towards the grove. Shuck curses and runs after them.*

Bree pauses briefly to turn and throw a spell.

"HOLD!"

Then she books it after Stitch towards the trees.

*Shuck weaves at the last second and just narrowly avoids being hit by the spell. It breezes past him and hits Bill square in the chest, freezing him in place. Bill's own momentum does the rest, and he pitches forward.*

Ah crud! *Lands on the ground face first, stiff as a board.*
