Do you think Zuko and Katara share the same brain?

So, basically this is a thread where you can post and discuss and similarities or differences you notice between Zuko and Katara.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 13, 2008 2:00 pm

Okay, I'll make the first comparison and contrast.

So, as I'm sure most of you know, both Zuko and Katara have an alter-ego or secret identity - The BlueSpirit and The Painted Lady. This is a similarity, as well as a difference.

When Zuko took on the disguise of The BlueSpirit, he used it for personal gain, stealing in order to help he and Iroh survive. However, when Katara took on the identity of The Painted Lady, she used it to help people, risking her own safety to heal the sick and help a polluted village.

But, even though they used their alter-egos for these reasons, I think they would also be willing to use them for the opposite. Zuko has shown time and time again that he is a kind hearted person, and I think that, if it came down to it, he would use the disguise of The BlueSpirit to help someone in need. Similarly, I think Katara would be willing to use the identity of The Painted Lady to help herself and her friends, if there was no other way.

I don't know if this means anything, but I think it shows that, though their intentions may be different at first, Zuko and Katara have very similar morals and ways of thinking.

Er... Sorry for the rant. >.>

I agree with you all the way. The Blue Spirit and The Painted Lady have their similarities and differences, but both would be willing to use them in the same way if it came down to it. You make some really good points.

Hey, wouldn't that be another Yin/Yang similarity, too? Similarities and differences, and both willing to use their power in the same way...so they're complimetary?
I've always thought that they'd make a good team together...

=o It is, isn't it? Neat.

We're probably gonna find a lot more things that support your Yin/Yang theory. 3nodding

Squee, The Yin/Yang-ness of this couple Cannot be denied...And I forgot to mention the Painted Lady/Blue Spirit in my little theory, too!
Did you guys also notice the colors that were associated with each of their aliases? The Painted Lady had red in her face paint, and the blue spirit was obviously blue...
heart
I'm beginning to think that they have more similarities than they have differences! Or it's just becoming more and more apparent than ever to me!

Their tempers, and the growth their patience has.

In the beginning of the series, Zuko and Katara are both very impatient, short-tempered, bossy people. Katara's short-temper is demonstrated near the beginning of the very first episode, as she accidently shatters an iceberg while yelling at Sokka for sexist comments. Zuko's is displayed not long after, when he yells at his uncle about 'Not needing calming tea', and again when he orders Iroh to teach him more advanced bending.

While Zuko's temper is highlighted a lot more frequently than Katara's, it's still a dominant trait that they share. And though their reasons for getting angry are often different, their behaviour is the same - somewhat involuntary bending, yelling, rude remarks (which they often don't mean), etc.

However, they both develop abit more tolerance as the series progresses. In 'The Desert', when Iroh is getting help from a friend, Zuko follows along. While he does complain and question what they're doing, he doesn't explode or yell like he would have at the beginning. In 'The Drill', when Sokka is constantly bothering Katara, she remains reasonably calm. Yes, he eventually wears on her nerves to the point of her yelling at him, but it takes a lot longer than it would have in season one.

So... yeah. That's a trait that they have in common. Sorry for ranting. Again. ^.^;

A good point! ^^
Also, in 'The Desert' Katara was a lot more patient too, trying to keep everyone together, dealing with Aang, who was now the angry one with a bad temper...and her brother getting high on everything he saw XD

Yeah, that too. Though, that may have been the sort of thing where, in a time of crisis, people are able to do things they normally wouldn't, like stay completely calm and keep everyone together. But, yeah, it's probably a bit of her maturing, too.

Both of you have really good points. She may have matured a little from that experience, even if it was a little.

The family situation.

Both of them have lost their mother, whom both were very close too (At least, I'm assuming Katara was). Katara took over the role of mother in her family and while travelling with the gaang, and also carries her necklace as a reminder of her mother. Zuko, however, has nothing to remember his mother by, and has had no mother figure in his life since Ursa left.

Another difference is their relation with their father. Katara is close to her dad and loves him dearly, recieving the same affection in return. Zuko, however, does not have such a good relationship with his father. Ozai sems to veiw him as pathetic and weak, and favors Azula because of her skill and all-round ability to do anything. He even went so far as to permenantly damage Zuko for the simple act of speaking out of turn. But, Zuko does have a father-figure who cares deeply for him - Iroh.

Speaking of which, they both have caring, elderly family members. Gran-Gran for Katara, and Iroh for Zuko. Iroh and Gran-Gran both pushed them to acheive their destiny and change the world.

Hmm... That's all I got at the moment. ^.^; If anyone can think of more to add, please do.

Okay, I know this isn't a place for videos, but this segment of 'Zutara for the Intellectual Dummy' focuses on compare and contrast, so I thought it would be appropriate.
