Okay, here's something that slightly confuses me... Someone on another message board I frequent made a topic asking about the "most dreaded" piece of official GW art, one which supposedly made fangirls gouge their eyes out. It didn't take me long to realize what he was talking about. You see, one of the GW artbooks comes with a double-sided poster. One side is a fairly standard pic of the boys and their Gundams. The other, however, is Relena standing in in a lake, the water coming up to her hips...and not a single stitch of clothing on her body. I know Relena's unpopular with some segments of the fandom, but really now. I know guys are notorious for not wanting to see each others' naughty bits, but I was never under the impression that women felt the same way. Even if it's just Relena, how does that work? Does she suddenly not count as a woman because they disagree with her politics or dislike her personality? Do her sex organs suddenly become spewing fonts of evil just because they enjoy pictures and stories of homosexual intercourse?

Void my dear, you are asking the same thing I have been pondering since I came into the Gundam Wing fandom. The sad thing is, yeah some fangirls really are that terrible and will scream and rant about anything to do with Relena... or her being pretty/a woman/with Heero. And it does seem to be due to the fact that they would rather see Heero and Duo doing the nasty in the back corner of a hanger somewhere... and Relena gets in the way of that "vision." That is something that has always perplexed me because... well to be honest I am a Gundam Wing slash fan and I still really like Relena's character. If you want to make a fanfic invovling Duo and Heero in some kind of relationship(even though that's the one pairing I can't stand sweatdrop ) there are plenty of mature ways to go about doing it with out throwing in a bunch of Relena torture into the fanfic. I have never understood why other slash fans can't just enjoy their pairings in peace and lay off the women of Gundam Wing a little. You can still appreciate them as characters and find other things to do with them and they don't have to "get in the way" of your favourite pilots being together should you chose to want to do that.

Wait... no one's considered any yuri pairings...? *Ahem*...
Anyway, personally, I prefer the pairings that had been originally suggested by the series itself. For crying out loud, Relena and Heero are totally meant for each other, sheerly based on personality (plus, that'd be pretty... *shifty eyes* redface ). Heero being with anyone else is probably the biggest eye roller to me. (Eh, that's my opinion, LOL!!)
Anyway! I think the girls like that have their own issues with their sexuality. Just like most dudes are insecure with themselves (Oh please, don't deny! You're totally uncomfortable, aren't you?). *Shrugs*

I'm pretty comfortable, given that the cross country team showers together and I don't feel at all awkward when doing so. Hell, some of the guys play soccer with bars of soap on the shower floor >_>
Some SEED and Naruto fangirls are just as bad... granted, it's not as though Sakura and Lacus aren't as engaging as Relena, and the fandoms aren't quite as scary about it, but it's just another case of dealing with the ignorant majority.
Now, let's go commission some GW yuri and post it on 4chan or something >_>

Well, with Naruto people initially thought Sakura was useless because all she really brought to the table was her crush on Sasuke. In the end though, she realized that she was defining herself by the crush, a major problem she needed to deal with, and as of Shippuden she's become much more competent and likable, so I think the fans have mellowed on her. That, and she showed a little of the fangirl herself when Konohamaru did the Sasuke/Sai version of the Sexy Jutsu. XD
And I have NEVER heard of Lacus getting hate from fangirls. People who dislike her character, sure (heck, I'm one of them). To be cynical, I almost think people see Lacus as something of an author avatar, which is why some people can accept her and others are revolted by her.
I'm not violently opposed to BL/yaoi, but the problem is that a good portion of it is...well...just not very well-made. That, and too many fans shove it in your face and get indignant if you don't start gushing. That, and it really annoys me that so many of these stories portray gays in a really cheap, stereotypical fashion (I'm straight, but I have several close friends who are gay and it bothers me when this happens).
I can accept a BL/yaoi story if it's well-done and respectful to the characters, but I just have a really hard time seeing Heero/Duo working, mainly because Duo himself seems to be a rather strong proponent of Heero/Relena (as seen in Battlefield of Pacifists, Endless Waltz, and several official artworks). It doesn't even seem to be the stereotypical "I want my beloved to be happy", but rather "those two are too shy to say anything on their own...time for Dr. Love to step in!"
(BTW, randomly, it's been commented that Duo hits on Relena in one episode. It's worth pointing out that this is a dub-only moment; in the Japanese, he refers to her as "Jouoh-san", which is a polite way of referring to a young woman of higher social standing than yourself. Maybe because that can't be translated directly, or because they felt it suited Duo's personality better, the US version replaced it with "Hey, good-lookin'!")
As for GW yuri, there's a shrine to the women of GW that has a few yuri fics. And...well...I've had an idea for one on the back burner for ages. Well, it's not QUITE yuri...long story short, Dorothy's birthday is coming up, and Relena promises to help her deal with her long-standing crush. Only AFTER she makes the promise does Dorothy reveal the two people she has crushes on: Heero, and Relena. So as her present, Relena spends a day doing girl stuff with Dorothy and hanging out...and they experiment... It's not quite yuri since it's a sequel to the lemon I wrote a couple of years ago where Relena is the naughty one who tries to subtlely show Heer that she's ready to advance their relationship...and when he's too thick to notice the hints, she basically goes into his bedroom, strips nude, and jumps him. sweatdrop
If you're gonna commission GW yuri, don't waste it on 4chan. It'd probably be better to find an artist who actually likes Relena and see if s/he is willing to do some private collection pics.

I mean, I'm not going to object to seeing Relena in that way, but I do feel a little like it demeans her as a powerful female force (I'm a bit of a feminist), since you know the majority of fantasies are that of the male fandom. I may be a yaoi fan (of course, my favorite pairing is also one of the most illogical whee ), but honestly, that picture doesn't bother me. I look at it as just another piece of art. 3nodding

While I can't really make a comment on the tastefulness of the artwork, I think that a lot of GW yaoi fans who hate Relena are among the most dramatic people I've met. Fangirls "gouging their eyes out" over one artbook picture is a perfect example. Saying "eww" and clicking the back button would be a perfectly justified and mild way of expressing their displeasure. Which is exactly what I did.
Granted, my hatred of Relena really had nothing to do with yaoi; I just didn't like her character-wise. It's dulled down to more of a mild annoyance now.
I promise, not all yaoi fans are as (pardon the language) ******** up as the loudest ones tend to be. sweatdrop

I don't think the loudest fans of ANYTHING represent the majority. Except maybe sports fans. razz
Also, are women really that put off by seeing each others' naughty bits (or even just their breasts)? I was under the impression that it's not nearly as bad as guys who get all creeped out at the thought of seeing another man's junk.

Well yea, but sadly they're the ones people tend to remember when they think of the group. Yea, sports fans are excluded because we know they're all crazy. Except me and my fellow Orioles fans. :p
I personally have never had a problem with seeing a naked female body; I think boobs are quite nice. heart whee Honestly, seeing a naked guy is just not attractive to me (unless it's my boyfriend, of course wink ).
But yea, I think women are just more vocal about their disgust because we're not "supposed to" like things like that. Or something. I dunno. whee

It's probably because its not 'lady' like to show our breasts. Some take it so far then they make fun of it when really they do it too. Eh, I have alot of homosexual friends so it doesn't bother me seeing something like that. Its only when I hear someone making fun of another's bits that makes me mad.
