Here we will talk about double bass!!!! And I only mean the kind with strings, not any other bass instruments. (That includes bass gutars).

You know, I have only started to learn bass this past year when I was student teaching. When my cooperating teacher was teaching, I took up a bass with the rest of my sixth grade lower strings and started sawing away. It was fun. My fingers hurt like hell afterwards too.
I have always held a special place in my heart for bassi. Even sitting on the other side of the stage, those low frequencies still rumble my heart. And oh my god, this one Senior Regional concert we played Copeland's Simple Gifts (from the Appalachian Spring Ballet), and when those basses came in, the whole building shook, and the music was complete with that solid foundation underneath it all. It was magical.
On a side note: ever been hit on the head with a scroll of a string bass? It hurts.

This thread belongs in the orchestra/strings subforum.
Moved. (and basses really are underappreciated! My best guy friend plays tuba, so I feel your pain.)

The only problem with basses is when you're trying to tune them, and one eejit won't stop playing scales on their instrument. The only solution? Shoot the offending player. but who really wants to date a fish?

Basses are amazing and rare. We should be worshiped! I had these uber cool pics of string basses but lost them. They had green ones! I want a green bass.

You want unappreciated? Try the viola. Most composers won't even write in our clef, and switch unnecesarily into treble. I can read treble, but it is a hassle switching back and forth. Secondly, we are often told we are "un-needed" in the orchestra, and that we're totally obsolete when it comes to solo playing. HELLO???!!!! Hindemith, Stamitz, Hoffmeister, Walton, Bartok, Mozart! They all wrote killer pieces for the viola. And we have beautiful tone despite the awkward build of the instrument-- it should be around 21 inches, but that's physically impossible to play. We're a key part in chamber music-- Ever heard Brahms 69? Or Smetina? Don't get me wrong-- the jokes are hilarious and we can be a little strange. But so many string players don't take the viola seriously, and some of us have a true passion for it. Sorry to interupt your happy little thread-- I love the double bass. I just needed to vent. Continue.

PM me!I'm a primary bass player, but I also play piano and I'm hoping to learn violin this year, then in the following years I'm going to learn other orchestral instruments and maybe a few band instruments.
But yes, double bass is the most rad instrument and is very downplayed and unappreciated. I roleplay anything!
