Subject: ACTUAL QUESTION ON CHEMISTRY EXAM

The following is supposedly an actual question given on a University of
Washington chemistry mid-term:
The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared
it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using
Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.
One student, however, wrote the following:

Quote:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different Religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.
2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over. So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you, and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct...leaving only Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God."

The student was the only one to recieve an A. 3nodding

hoo boy! *wipes tear* That was brilliant.....absolutly brilliant..... xd Wait.....that means......if Number 2 is correct......Then I'm not going to hell anymore! My sister tells me that I'm going to hell since I'm bisexual WOOT!!! I can sin like hell and still get to the pearly gates! St. Peter, HERE I COME BABY!!!!

Ahem.....Yeah, that was funny! and I live in Washington..... xd

Wooo boy, i love the way he uses old sayings (I.E. "When hell freezes over" and "all hell breaks loose"). Its absolutly brilliant, he must be very smart to have come up with such an answer. And I don't mean book smart.

There's one thing he forgot to account for: layers

According to Dante's inferno, hell is divided into nine greatly varied layers, each effectively a seperate but linked plane of existance with its own temperature and physical laws. The ninth circle is a frozen wasteland, and the first two circles, limbo and purgatory, actually relinquish souls eventually. Furthermore it is possible that hell expands based on the number of souls entering it, and "cold day in hell", well a cold day is relative and a temporary variance, so a cold day in hell could be hot enough to melt steel.

...damn I think to much. xp

That's quite possibly the most brilliant thing I've ever read.

...pretty much all of that pretty much summed up what I was think, pretty much...as Clyde would say. 3nodding It also shows why I don't believe in Heaven or Hell- too many flaws.

Not if you approach them the right way.

First, take into account that they are not merely locations, but actual planes of existance, therefor allowing them to be infinite.
Also, take in to the account that "as cold as hell" and "as hot as hell" mean the same thing.

Haha Halarious and brillient!

When we get to WW2 in Social Studies I'm TOTALLY getting back into my Hitler being a genius with odd ideals bit agian! ^^ I did that on an SAT once. I would love to meet the person that read that.

Good point. I guees I just try to look at everything from a scientific point of view. The only place I can think of that is anythinglike Hell would be the planet Venus.

Though it was funny, I don't believe it's actually something submitted by a student. xp

Well, at least someone else thinks Hitler was a genius. A sadistic, ruthless, horrible basterd genius, but a genius nethertheless.
