Ton's of people have the same debate...is Band a sport or not? If you ask the football players...and the cheerleaders that...they will more then likely say "no" but i say that to a certain degree it is. So I'm asking for you're opinion...is band a sport..or not? what do you think? actually...a better question to ask would be...why is band not considered a sport? what is the reason that band is so...not important? if you think about it, only the band people think that band is something "including myself". It takes enough physical strength plus brain power, I guess you have to endure it to realize it.

Well at my school it hardly matters wether or not you consider it a sport. We have an excellent music program.
But if ask me, it is a sport. The dictionary agrees with me too.

Can't sympathize. At my school even most of the football players agree that the band's better than the football team. Of course that's not saying much if you've ever seen our football team... Not to mention several of us could probably beat the football team at football... But band is a sport. Undeniably. Why else would it involve so many outdoor practice sessions in unfriendly if not down right dangerous weather conditions?

Personally, I'd say band is not considered a sport because the people who decide what counts as a sport have never been in marching band (probably never even seen one, lol). Because most people in marching band agree it's a sport.

Dude I got into this discussion in my Honors World History class, and it was me and five other marching band students against three cheerlearders. Band won though and our teacher agreed that we were better. To be hoenst our football sucks, and well the band pretty much can beath their, well...not going to say it. XD It may not be considered a sport but that doesn't mean we don't go through more or just as much as all the other sport teams go through.

At my school we are not considered as a sport but certian groups do, the ROTC agrees that we are a sport because we work harder than any other program at our school. Our football team sucks and most of them don't see marching as sport even though the lose all the time and we actually win.
I consider it as a sport, you have to be atheletic to play and march at the same time. I swear that I lost at least 15lbs marching and have more upper body stength, leg strength, and endurance than I did before marching.

I watched this thing on youtube that did a bunch of tests on marching band. They monitored the heart rate and a bunch of other stuff of a drummer while marching, and it showed that marching band is a very strenuous activity and is as physically demanding as any sport.

Well... I can say right now that as of last year one year of band is considered half a PE credit, just like a Varsity sport, and it's written down as a sport or activity offered. Of course, the principle and vp both hate band and would rather take the band's money and give it to football or basketball, but that's beside the point. We have no support, but it is considered as much a sport if not more in my school.

For us, it counts as a class, not P.E., though, and that's their excuse as to why it doesn't count as a sport. Losers. However, some random soccer chick that I talked to called it a sport, so I guess the students consider it one, to some degree.
On the plus side, at a recent PTA meeting, a few of the parents complained about how it wasn't a P.E. credit, so that may be changing soon. I hope it does. I'd rather do two three-hour marching band practices and one eight-hour one per week than run aimlessly for an hour Monday-Friday.

D:, how come people are always doing cheerleader/football vs. marching band? I guess it's just at our school where everyone actually gets along. And I do consider it as a sport, because we practice, exercise, warm-up, have competitions, and all that jazz. However, my Government teacher, who's also a basketball coach disagreed with us and we debated with him after a while. However, I'm not saying marching band is harder than other sports. I'm sure cheerleaders can't roll-step while carrying an instrument, guide, and play a memorize piece of music. But I'm sure I can't do a half-tuck back-flip while doing a chant and lifting a person that weighs the same as me above my head.

Truthfully, I can't consider band a sport. I can consider it an extra-curricular activity for sure. At our school, you get a school credit for band. All sports don't get any school credit, not even for gym. That's just the way I think about it. Also, Multiple Orgasms, I have a rebuttal to your statement. We have a basketball cheerleader in the band and can do both. Haha, just a little argument, that's all. ^^

I think marching band is a sport. I think this becuase they work just as hard as or even harder than other sports. They prefrom at football games, they go into competitions & have pratices. To me its like dance, people say its not but if you really think about it you will relaize that it actaully kind of is a sport. MB is not considered a sport mostley becuase most people look down upon them well at my school they are looknig down on & people just don't relize that its hard work & they have to learn what they have to do & work together. The reason that band is so important is that it helps build skills that make you better with working with other people (i can't think of what that is called at this momnet in time *rolls eyes at self*), it is thought as not imporatant pretty much the same reason why people don't consider it a sport, and because it is looked down on & such. This is coming from someone who is not in MB at all but may be if time allows it, well Color Gaurd that is, after being sent alot of DCI vids. form a MB Geek awsome friend of mine & going 2 my home coming foot ball game I have relized all that I just said.
