Name: Hazeline Lee
Age: 33
Height: 160 cm
Occupation: Currently working as a research officer in a plant laboratory. Works in the bookstore on and off now that Xiu seems capable of managing it. Is debating the possibility of furthering her studies.
Hobbies: Reading, watching documentaries, doing the occasional baking and crafts.
Likes: Pastel colours, taking a stroll during windy days, tea...
Hates: Being called a banana, rap singers, raised voices, worms...

Status: Single but content

Appearace: Hazeline appears as a slim, middle aged lady with dark brown hair that is constantly pulled back into a ponytail or tied up in a bun. Diagnosed with short-sightedness since primary school, Hazeline is rarely ever seen without a pair of black steel rimmed glasses. Another item that Hazeline is rarely seen without is her leather wristwatch that she wears on her left hand.

When working, Hazeline can be found sporting a combination of pastel coloured blouses with dark coloured slacks under a white lab coat. Flat heeled shoes are the footwear of choice for Hazeline.

When at home, Hazeline prefers to go about with t-shirts and bermudas. Skirts or jeans for shopping while dresses, gowns and the like are only worn for/during special occasions.

Personality
Hazeline is for the most part an introvert and rarely finds the need to socialize with others. She prefers to keep to the company of close friends and family but she does attend the occasional gathering hosted by her workplace/ community.

A bookworm by nature, Hazeline loves reading and delights in sharing her passion about books with her Raevan. It is fun to be able to discuss the theories, plots and character developments with someone else in the household.

Hazeline is not well endowed when it comes to a sense of humour and most of her jokes and punch lines tend to fall short. Aware of this, Hazeline is more than happy to let someone else be the life of the party.

Hazeline is nothing but serious when it comes to her work and research. Oftentimes one would find her holed up in her room or office for hours as she works on her papers and publications.

Preferring practicality over aesthetics, Hazeline makes her purchases based on how useful a product is. For example, if given a choice between an ornamental vase and a milk jug, Hazeline would most likely choose the jug. On the grounds that it could at least be used for something. However, if two curtains are of equal functionality and comparable in price, Hazeline would only then factor in the aesthetics. It is not much of a surprise then that Mrs. Bedievere would be the one responsible for the "feminine touch" of the house.

Brief History

Hazeline's father passed away when she was very young. Her mother remarried soon after. To her parents' relief, Hazeline and her stepbrother Gerald got along pretty well with each other. The family became even closer when Joshua was born.

From a young age, Hazeline had always loved books and her parents had always supported and encouraged this hobby of hers. Their continuous support and encouragement paid off when Hazeline performed well in school and was offered a place in one of the better universities. There, Hazeline took a degree in biotechnology and furthered her studies in plant biotechnology.

After graduation, Hazeline got a job as a research officer and needed a place to stay. Wanting to help his sister, Gerald scouted the housing areas close to the research institute and came across the rundown bookstore managed by Mrs. Bedievere. After purchasing the bookstore and striking an agreement with the old dame, Gerald got Hazeline and Joshua to move in with Mrs. Bedievere. Which was convenient for everyone all around as Hazeline got a place to stay close to work, Joshua could attend school nearby, Mrs. Bedievere was no longer alone and had someone else to manage the technical part of shop owning and Hazeline's parents could go for their "Around-the-world" trip.

Hazeline and Joshua still receive postcards from their traveling parents from time to time.

Other important human characters of the household:

Gerald (Older stepbrother): Gerald is five years older than Hazeline and is considered by many to be a financially successful businessman. But like his parents, Gerald lives to travel and is constantly on the move from one city to the next. The family keeps in touch via instant messaging and video calls . Xiu has yet to meet him.

Joshua (Younger halfbrother): The baby of the family, Joshua is fifteen years younger than Hazeline and was an unexpected (but very much welcomed) addition to the family. Like any teenagers his age ( 18 ), Joshua enjoys playing video games and hanging out with his friends. Come fall, he will be enrolled in a Foundation course for computer programming.

Mrs. Bedievere aka Ol' Ma or 'Ma' for short: A very gusty, capable and cheerful woman of 73 who helps Hazeline and Xiu run the shop. Also helps in the cleaning and maintaining of the shop/house in general and lives on the first floor of the shophouse with Hazeline. Treats Hazeline as if she were her own daughter. Her cooking and baking skills are second to none.

Mrs. Bedievere was the wife of the original owner of the home and bookstore that the family is currently staying in. Ever since the death of her husband, the store has been gradually falling apart (as capable as the old dame was, she was not very proficient in book and stock keeping) and had it not been for Gerald who bought the store and took on the debts incurred, the poor lady would have been turned out to the streets. Instead, Mrs. Bedievere was allowed to continue living in the home she had build on the condition that Hazeline and Joshua were allowed to live with her.

Naturally the old dame agreed and promptly made the necessary arrangements to accommodate the family.

Xiu is a raevan who prefers the company of books and a small group of friends as opposed to confrontations and fighting. However, if the situation does come up, he would fight tooth and nail to protect his family and friends.

His protective nature is greatly aided by his ability to detect malevolent intentions in others (living or otherwise). For living beings plotting to cause harm, Xiu would see a darkish aura surrounding them. The darker the aura, the more dangerous their intentions are. For non-living beings such as ghosts (and other invisible spooks), Xiu is not able to see them but is still able to detect their harmful disposition. To Xiu, evil spirits appear as a mass of black fog. The thicker and larger the fog, the more dangerous they are.

As such, Xiu hates throwing himself into unnecessary danger and might appear as indecisive at timesl to others.

Feeding habbits: Xiu feeds off the innocence/positive vibes of others but no harm will be done to the person whose innocence is being consumed. In fact, as a sort of symbiotic interaction, the person whose innocence is being eaten will be getting a certain amount of good luck in return for providing Xiu with a meal. The giver will also be feeling like they have just done a good deed and will get through the day feeling pleased and contented. This will probably encourage them to perform even more good deeds and generate even more innocence for Xiu to feed off.

However once a year during the Hungry Ghost Month, his diet shifts to the consumption of human blood. Eyes will change from blue to red to reflect this and fangs will appear during feeding.

Abilities:
Luck giving (passive) - Xiu is able to give others luck but only when he has eaten their innocence. Xiu has no control over this skill as of yet and it is doubtful that he is even aware of it as the luck being given at this point of time would seem just like a string of convenient coincidences. No sudden lottery winning here!

Deception Detection (passive) - Xiu is able to detect if someone is lying and is able to differentiate between a lie that is done for one's own interest or a lie that is done to cause harm to others. The severity of the lie could also be judged.
This skill also includes detecting people with the intention to cause direct harm (e.g: If someone has a gun hidden in their overcoat with the intention to shoot, Xiu can sense their motives before the deed is done).

Blood Manipulation (active)- Ever since the fel virus outbreak and subsequently in Sigel stage, Xiu is able to (to a greater or lesser degree) manipulate blood. Greater when he himself has recently consumed blood and lesser when he has not. If he has consumed blood prior to activating his skill, Xiu's eyes and rune would glow red and the Sigel would be able to manipulate the blood of others without needing to come into contact with them. As he utilizes his skill, the red of his eyes and rune will gradually fade to his default blue once more. If Xiu has not consumed blood, he has to be in direct contact with the person whose blood he wishes to manipulate.

Unlike in movies and mangas, Xiu's blood manipulation does not involve anything as fancy as making weapons and stuff out of blood. Rather, he manipulates the components and funtion within the blood itself. E.g: clotting factors, electrolytes, oxygen affinity of the blood cells...etc

Luck Manipulation (active)- Luck is the probability of an event occurring in one's favour. And probability is a numerical value denoting the likelihood of it happening. Once Xiu is able to gauge the probability of an event, he can manipulate it to his advantage.The higher the probability of something occurring, the less magic he would have to use to induce it.

Fel essence:

White blood – It is undeniable that regardless of status, creed, or race, one’s blood would always be red (due to the iron found in the haem group of the blood). But lo and behold, when an innocent of sometime long past was charged with the death penalty for something that he was guiltless of, the blood that poured out of his wound during the execution was not red but white much to the astonishment of the court. As the white blood pooled onto the execution ground, some of it was collected and kept as a memento of an erroneously judged crime. However, till now, the blood still remains as white and as pure and as un-coagulated as it the day is was spilled much to the disbelief of modern day scientists.

Soul: Pi Yao

Rapid's note: First and foremost, there seem to be no hard and fast rule for this said legendary creature and there are lots of non-consistent bits about it. So basically, what I’ve listed below are just a few of the many scattered information regarding the creature from various websites.

Pi Yao's defining traits (from Mythical Creatures| CozyChinese.COM):

- It is a guardian animal that stands for fair-lay and righteousness.
- It does not exhaust its life-span (I guess this implies that it is immortal)
- It feeds on air and drinks dew
- It understand human speech
- It’s humane, intelligent, loyal and forgiving
- It loves and protects those who are weaker than itself.
- Because of its ferocity, a single cry from it can subdue a thousand men, frighten animals, make soldiers lose their strength all at once and scatter demons.
- It is able to exorcise demons and evil spirits by draining away their essence and converting it to wealth.
- Can be used to prevent bad luck and diseases and ushers in wealth.

Regarding the Pi Yao’s role and background

"Pi Yao is the ninth son of the Heavenly Dragon and has different names depending on where it is sighted. Pi Yao lives in the heaven, Pi Xiu lives on earth and Pi Kan lives in the sea. All have the same properties"

(Finally realized after much web-surfing that there are actually three versions to it and the Pi Yao, which is the heavenly version, has wings as compared to its earth counterpart while the Pi Kan has a fish like tail…)

“Both Fu Dogs and Pi Yao are associated with temples and are often placed at their main entrance to guard against malevolent spirits. The Pi Yao is less seen as temple guardians, since this role is usually given to Fu Dogs or Lions”

“They are said to contain the power accumulated through the ages” (I guess it means that the older they are, the stronger they become…)

“Pi Yaos are traditionally used as personal protectors and when made expressly for this purpose, exert great power in safeguarding the health and welfare of its owner”

Physical Description:

Rapid’s note: Because Pi Xiu and Pi Yao have been used interchangeably; the only distinctive difference (that I can find) between the two is that the Pi Yao, which is the heavenly version, has wings while the Pi Xiu does not. Apart from that, its other physical attributes are similar.

-The Pi Yao is a mythical two horned or antlered Chinese animal. Although in recent times, the one horned version is becoming increasingly more common, I am going for the older two horned version.

-Its fur is described to be whitish-grey in colour.

-The description of its appearance evolved through the dynasties until it settled on short wings, two horns, coiling tail, with manes connected to either the chest or the spine, protruding eyes and long menacing fangs.

-The Chinese character for “Pi” seems to refer to some sort of leopard like creature or…as quoted from the Chinese History Forum:

“It is a small dragon that looks like a grayish white dragon like panther”

-Looking at the posture in which it is usually shown, the creature seems to project a sense of strength, elegance and mobility

-And err…it has no a**s because it has offended the Jade Emperor sometime in the past. So as a punishment it can only eat and not defecate. >.<;;;
