So I got an electric silvertone guitar for christmas, but have no idea about guitars! I REALLY want to learn how to play, but when this electric guitar is plugged in to an amplifier, it sounds just like an acoustic guitar. Is the guitar not tuned right or is it the wrong guitar? I sing rock so I really wanted to learn how to play rock music, but this guitar plays song's more in the line of Johnny Cash or something which is not the type of music I want to play. The guitar has 6 strings so I assume that it's not a base. What is wrong with my guitar, and is there a way to get it to sound more like an electric guitar instead of an acoustic? Thank's for reading this long newbie question...

the "accoustic" tone you are refering to sounds like what we call the "clean" setting. i assume you want get "distortion," which can used depending on the amp you have. if there is a button called "drive" or distortion then push it to get the sound. to get more distortion turn up the "gain" and keep the "master volume" at a lower level than the gain at all times. you can mess with the knobs as much as you want to find a tone that you like. hope that helps. smile

Hmm? I don't see a "Drive" setting, but here are the buttons on my amp. I have no idea of how to do this. : /
--------------------

Volume - Obviously >_>

Treble - No idea..

Middle - No idea...

Bass - Maybe this has something to do with it??

Presence - No idea...
--------------------

It's a "Drive" modeld amplifier according to the logo.

well...either you have a bass amp or you just got a really bad one. no offense but i had a drive amp from musiciansfriend as my first amp and i sold it to some sucker for chump change and got something slightly better.
as for the treble, mid, and bass; those are the tone knobs to get a slightly different sound. it's called a 3-band equalizer.
and sorry but withought a cheap overdrive or distorion pedal you're not going to get the sound that "you" are looking for. that does'nt mean you can't practice though, if it bothers you too much you can just play unplugged, sometimes i prefer that when i'm doing excercises.

No biggy, I have enough money to buy another amp, but it sucks that I have to go out, and get another one. Thank's a lot though man, and may I ask where you got that guitar for your avi? It's awesome!

there is actually a thread that i just replyd to in here, i typed in "guitar" at the marketplace and it showed up for 300 gold.

might i suggest a "Crate" amp as your first amp, good value for the $70.

Thank's, and I'll keep that in mind. I am just thankful that I got the right guitar. I am going to dedicate a lot of my time in to learning this thing.

Look for a little button that says "boost" or "overdrive"

if your amp doesn't have one, then turn the Gain up on it.
