2. Jesus was not born on the 25th, the bible makes this VERY clear.
Yup, since there were no Jewish holidays in December, it was impossible for this to be his birthday (Hannukka doesn't count, barely a holiday until the Jewish people played it up for their kids).
December 25 is Mithra's birthday. And some sun god's too, if I remember. mrgreen
It was just easier for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus at the same time the pagans were celebrating back when they had to hide their beliefs. Not to mention that it states that on the night Jesus was born the Shepard's were out in the fields with their flocks, which would be far far far too cold in December in that region for this sort of thing.
It might be a symbolic thing, like the fact that the Queen's birthday is celebrated when the Queen wasn't born on that day.
And I dunno - here in Scotland the sheep seem to be out 365 days a year, and it's a fair bit colder here than it would be so close to the equator. Maybe shepherds 2000 years ago were really ******** tough. Or maybe I'm clueless. |D
And lastly -- if the angel came to Mary announcing her pregnancy, I'd assume she'd be kind of unaware of the fact, otherwise she'd be spazzing at Joseph for doing things to her while she slept, so is it not possible the annunciation happened in Summer, where it's very likely the shepherds would be out doing their thing?
