So I remember in high school I met a guy in my youth group whom I started dating and while his family were serious christians, they did not celebrate christmas. I wondered why this was, so I asked his mother and she said that it was because christmas was so commercial that it had nothing to do with christ, and also it had pagan roots.
Now personally I agree it has pagan roots, but that doesn't bother me because a holiday is what you make it, and if it's about Christ to you, then it's about Christ. If it's about winter solstice to you, then it's about winter solstice, etc.
As for the commercial aspect, well, yeah. I agree it's largely a day for people to buy crap but in other countries, like Uruguay where my father is from, he says people there just relax and spend time together and it isn't very commercial. So I think as of commercialism, often people in this country look so much at our country's version of "Christmas" and think "Oh well I don't like all this commercial crap - forget christmas!" when it doesn't have to be that way.
I guess what I'm saying is, I don't see what's "wrong" with Christmas, considering it's whatever you make it and it doesn't have to be a commercial thing.
Anyway, I wanted to see if there were any christians in here who didn't celebrate christmas, and the opinions of those who do or don't, whatever.
Dicuss: Do you celebrate christmas? What does it mean to you? Does the commercial element make it more fun, or does it ruin the holiday? etc.
