Colton toddled on his knees to one of the corners, quickly blocking everyone else's view of the thing that he was hiding. It was a large black box with a screen and numerous dials, none of which were lit up at the moment. The boy frowned slightly at the receptacle and banged a small fist against the top, yipping when the thing blared something loudly. There were voices coming from it! Colt quickly fiddled with some knob and the voices went down to a tolerable level and the boy leaned closer to hear what they were saying...
"Call now to win your tickets to the New Year's Eve Exclusive Concert!"
... How do I call?, he asked himself before shrugging and continuing to tune into the large magic box, not taking any notice of the others at the party.

Intrigued by the sudden noise from the corner, Desi quietly approached the dog boy. He was curious, but cautious. The boy seemed to be having fun on his own, so Desi didn't want to bother him if he wanted to be alone.
But it's so cool, he thought to himself, attempting to create a decent excuse for randomly coming over. Ringing the end of his tail in his hands, Desi peered with interest over Colt's shoulder, pleased that he hadn't yet been noticed. Maybe he could just get a quick look and then leave without being a bother.
Unfortunately, he hadn't noticed that his tail had wrapped around one leg before he caught hold of it. As Desi began to lean forward to get a better look at the mysterious box, he tugged on his tail, thus causing himself to trip and fall directly on top of the boy in front of him.

Colton was so intent on the magic noise-making thing that he wasn't aware that he was being watched by someone until the someone fell on top of him. Yelping and flailing to hide the black package - just in case he wasn't supposed to have it - and peered suspiciously over his shoulder, mind leaping to think of a creative excuse.
I was just checking to make sure that it wasn't broken. I wanted to be friends with it. I thought that it looked tasty...
Seeing that it wasn't any of the adults ( sweatdrop Whew, that was close), Colton relaxed a little, but kept an arm over the front of his box until he knew for sure that the other Hyte wasn't going to go tattle. "Who are you?" he asked far more gruffly than he'd intended; Colton was a nice puppy. Wasn't Kuro always telling him that?

Philomena, of course, had been looking for an excuse to get out and explore the big, wide world of Hytech Labs ever since her mother actually brought her here...outside of the house...it was amazing that she'd actually gotten a chance to leave. The house was nice, but...it was a house. Like she hadn't already found all the nooks and crannies as a young kitty.
So, seeing two of what could only be her "Batch-mates" (the only other Hytes around were either too young or too old to fit the criteria), she was struck with curiosity. Plus, that box the puppy kept rather unsuccessfully trying to hide from sight looked pretty interesting...
"What are you doing?" she asked the two boys, pointing straight at Colton and his box. She'd caught the edge of the puppy's last question, so she added, "I'm Philomena. But call me 'Mena. We're all from the same lab batch, right? Mama'd said there were others."

Desi was feeling ridiculously uncomfortable at the moment. First he'd managed to distress the boy before him (by falling rather clumsily into him, no less) and now there was a girl, too. All in all, he was really beginning to wish that he had chosen to just mind his own business, but it was far too late by this point. Glancing down in an attempt to help himself think more clearly, he made a strange 'eep'-like sound and scooted off to the side after noticing that he hadn't actually moved after landing on the other Hyte. A hint of red crossed his face and quickly deepened once he realized he was blushing at all. Stupid embarrassment. I wish I was still a lizard...
Clutching his tail, he awkwardly stammered, "I-I'm Deridesio - I mean Desidario - I mean, um, Desi. Kakui told me to look out for a couple of others... I guess that could mean us..." It was difficult, at this point, to differentiate between Desi's face and a ripe tomato (had a ripe tomato been there, of course) thanks to his incredible ability to mispronounce his own name twice. Ugh, I bet they think I'm stupid now, but I'm not! I'm smart. I know stuff, really! he thought avidly to himself. He shot the other two Hytes a glance, wondering just how bad an impression he'd made, but quickly looked back at the box when it made a strange crinkly-paper sort of sound. "What was that?" he asked without thinking.

Colton glanced between the lizard boy who had fallen into him and the new cat girl. For one, he was suspicious in case they were just going to tell the adults and he didn't want to meet that Maxwell guy in person. Trying to scoot in front of his box to shield it with his body, Colt looked at Desi strangely. If one looked closely enough, one might have identified it as jealousy. "I want three names," he muttered, pouting, before turning to include both of them.
"I'm Colton. Or just Colt. My Mom said that I could bring a toy from home to the party, so I brought this magic box," he said, shifting to one side slightly to reveal the screen of the package, which was illuminating a series of numbers. "She points at it and it makes noise, so it's gotta be magic, right? I'm trying to listen to it. It said to 'call' and we'd win. But, I don't know how to call."
The little puppy boy looked a bit frustrated and glanced around the room to make sure no adults were within hearing range. "Wanna go find out how this thing works?" Already, he was including the other two in his plot to make the magic box obey him.

'Mena acknowledged their names with a nod, and was struck with amusement that they all had nicknames that they preferred to their full names. She found it kind of funny that Desi's face had gone all red, but Mama did that a lot right before she started apologizing...or started spazzing after 'Mena had done something interesting. Mama freaked out sooo easily... So she figured Desi was probably just like that.
"It's not magic, it's probably...technology," Philomena said, with eyes practically sparkling in excitement. "I'm pretty good with mechanical things!" Well, except for when they blew up. But honestly, how was she supposed to have known that metal wasn't good for those microwavey things? Mama always heated up food in them, so it really wasn't her fault that her metal bowl hadn't been a good thing to stick in there...

The boy blinked. "Techwalophee? Is that like the crazy dancing thing that my Mom does all the time?" She was always doing some crazy jumping around and singing at the top of her lungs. "No, that's shorter; I think it's just techno. Do you know how to get it to listen to me?" He poked a button and the whole thing turned dark. When Colt pressed it again, the magic box/techwalophee turned back on. "I want to learn so that I can impress my Mom when we get back home."
His short tail wagged briefly when thought of his mother, but otherwise, he sat expectantly waiting for anything his two new playmates could come up with.

"Oohhh, I've heard of that!" Desi exclaimed, suddenly lighting up and completely forgetting that he was supposed to be feeling awkward and shy, "Mum's always looking at books about it and she complains about it lots! Apparently it's 'udderly useless'... I think it might be made by cows." Practically glowing with interest and excitement, Desi looked closer at the box.
"What does this do..?" he asked as he reached out and poked at a triangular button. He instantly regretted it as the machine suddenly began to blare something that he was quite sure his mum usually referred to as 'racket' or 'noise'. He quickly flinched away and began to apologize profusely. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make it scream!"

A silhouette emerged from the shadows in the corner, padding across the floor. Maxwell stepped into the glow of the 'magic box', purposefully on all fours to match the children's eyelevel. A deft swipe, and the machine ceased its screaming.
"What are you shrimps doing?" He drawled. "The party is over, yannow. You'd better take that hi-fi back to your mommy, kid." He glanced at Colton, and gestured with a tilt of his head.
"In any case," he stretched out and up as he stood. "You buggers be sure to come by the main part of the store again. I'm so damn bored, I'll even play with kids." A flash of fang, a devilish smile, and he was gone.
