The corporate pirated Santa that kids fawn over today is nothing like the real Santa. The True Santa. The Santa of the Old World...

St. Nicholas was never fat and jolly. He didn't wear a fur-trimmed coat (oh no, he detested fur coats and hats and things) and he didn't eat cookies and he certainly didn't bring toys to the bad kids like he does today. No, St. Nicholas was much more firm and stoic...

St. Nicholas was a stag, as all of the Old World great ones were. A stag of wondrous proportions. An ancient buck, with antlers that stretched for miles and held up the very sky and when he moved, the clouds would move with him, creating the wind and shifting the rains. Hooves that pierced the soil and brought up new life, roots and trees and wonderful flowers, the likes of which aren't seen in this day and age. He had a beard, of course, but it was the majestic white beard of a reindeer, one that tumbled down across the lands and flowed between the terrain and created streams and lakes and seas. And he was red, the deep, dusky red of the earth, with bright white eyes that had no pupils and no form and glowed bold and empty but always saw, saw everything, and that is how he knew who had been good and who had been bad. He needed no list. Time was his list.

Every winter, St. Nicholas would breathe in deeply, and suck up all the life of the forest. Cold would spread. Animals would sleep. Leaves would fall and cover the ground and snow would blanket the world. And then St. Nicholas would breathe out, and release the life once more, and the snow would melt and the animals would wake and play and dance about in his glory, and the world would be renewed.

But as children grew more rowdy, as adults grew up and forgot about him, as humans began to tear up his hooves and pollute his wonderful soft beard and fill his antlers with the buzzing of planes and blimps and all sorts of mechanical nonsense, St. Nicholas began to fade. As he faded, the glory of Christmas faded. Every year changed into the next with no celebration of the earth. Every Christmas melded into the others. There was no sleep. There was no rest. The world could no longer be renewed.

St. Nicholas was not gone, however. Only dimmer, only fainter.

There would come a time when he would return.

Lar has set aside a small room in his cabin for Roland. Roland will not be moving into that room until he has grown a bit older, so for now he stays in Lar's bedroom and sleeps in the small crib Lar built for him.

Roland's soon-to-be bedroom is kept neat and tidy, and the furniture inside is very simple. A small wooden dresser rests next to the twin-sized bed in the corner, which is also made of wood. The bed has a thick mattress made from cloth and goose down, which is undented and untarnished, having never been used before. Two pillows (also cloth-and-down) rest on one end, and there are no blankets or sheets yet, since no one is using it. There is one window adjacent to the bed, with simple curtains, always kept pulled. There is also one battery-powered lamp on the dresser.

In addition to his bedroom (which is furnished identically like Roland's, save for the addition of Roland's crib), Lar also has a small 'den' area in the cabin. This is where he spends most of his time when he is not out hunting.

The den is large, almost half the size of the house, and filled with bookshelves and books. There are small tables in each corner, next to the bookshelves, and anywhere else there is room to put one. Unlike the rest of the house, it is rather disorganized, with papers and maps and tools scattered about the little tables. On the walls are mounted racks of antlers from some of Lar's greatest kills, and next to the door there is a hat rack covered from top to bottom in deerskin and coonskin hats, cloaks, scarves, jackets, and other bits of clothing. Across from the door, against the wall, is a giant stone-and-marble fireplace, Lar's pride and joy. In the winter there is always a fire going inside the fireplace, and during the summer, at nighttime, Lar often gets a fire going as well. In front of the fireplace is a thick bear rug, which Tam likes to rest on.

On the bookshelves are all manner of books, from hunter's guides to children's stories. They all have broken spines and worn covers. Lar reads them all in an effort to try and become more literate, though he isn't making much progress.
