It seemed like forever since the day Caelyndei had finally gathered the courage to leave the strangely bitter-sweet comfort of her basket. Though it had been cramped and somewhat uncomfortable towards the end, it was still Caely's second home. Poking her head out the lip of her basket, she giggled and used the small, lovingly weaved object as a fortress from imaginary baddies and all sorts of scary things. It wouldn't be much longer before she wouldn't any longer be able to fit, even now it was a rather tight squeeze. Sleek ears flicked as she peered at the tall grass all around her, sitting up to look over it before quickly ducking back down when two long rabbit ears stared back at her. Eeep!!

Trying to quiet her giggles she lipped the lid of her basket, pulling it to flop over her head as she sunk down inside until only jade optics peeked form the darkness. Caelyndei was waiting for the poor, unsuspecting rabbit nearer to her location before springing out like some sort of make-shift jack in the box. It was a game the young paint had grown to love, though the surrounding wildlife could hardly say the same. Biting her tongue she squashed herself down as far as she could until the lid closed and her body was enshrouded in darkness, audits straining for the sound of the nearing rustle of stirring in the grass.

The little colt made his way through the under brush, pushing past the limbs of trees that reached out and attempted to ensnare him. Oh no - he wasn't going to be captured, not today! Pausing now and then to paw at the slight frozen ground, the little orange colt was pleased that some of the snow had melted, leaving little piles of slush and dirtied snow as a reminder to the local wildlife. No, winter was far from over, but comparatively warmer days were at hand and the little colt was enjoying it.

He'd been born in winter, and as it was he didn't understand or realize that the cold would eventually, someday let up and give way to a warmer and greener world.

With little regard to his surroundings -it was a small woods, and he'd seen everything there was to see in 'em (or so he believed) - that he hardly noticed the brown and black kissed basket. It was only as his hooves touched the ground that two long ears flickered, and the small, unsuspecting rabbit took off like a light. The flash of brown did startle the colt, who leapt up a bit and stared. What on earth was that!?

Nostrils flaring, ears pricked, the little sunset colt let his silver eyes stare at the spot the rabbit had been. It was only then that it occurred to him that the stump he'd thought he'd seen was actually a basket! He'd never seen such a thing in his life, and the newness of it intrigued him. Why was it out here? What was it anyway. . . ? Unlike many soquili in the land, he hadn't been placed within a basket so sweetly, so the concept was new and foreign to him. What on earth could it be?

Silver eyes wide with curiousity, the little colt took a step forward and sniffed at it. It smelled like woods and . . .and something else. Like his sister but not at all - that was odd! Maybe his little winged sibling had been this way?

. . . doubtful, but a possibility nonetheless.

Oblivious to the little filly hidden within, he lipped at the edge, curious. It didn't taste particularly good. . bleh.

Waiting patiently, Caelyndei strained to listen for sounds of the little rabbit's footsteps towards the basket once curiosity got the better of the wary creature. Her heart racing beneath her ribcage like galloping hooves with anticipation. This was going to be so much fun! So concentrated was the young filly's senses on the clover-muncher's actions that her entire body leapt out of her pelt when a stranger much heavier than the little creature she'd been intending to torment crunched through the slush and snow.

The slosh of hooves in the muddy mixture was so unexpectedly loud, though it didn't seem to be a quick gait or loud enough to be something very large. Still, Caely was hesitant to peek out of her basket, wincing as her rabbit started at the sound of the unfamiliar guest and dashed away in a hurry. Cynara's daughter knew that bunnies tended to be skittish creatures, but she still couldn't help but wonder if it was danger that caused the creature to run. Not that she had ever really known fear.

Sleek ears flicked as the hoof steps approached gradually, gasping at the soft sound of scraping on the lip of her basket. What the heck? Was it trying to eat her basket? Poking her nose out from under the lid she whinnied loudly to hopefully spoke the creature from the edge, offended. Hay! That's not food! Don't eat my basket!

Tossing her head the lid fell backwards revealing the black and bay filly whose ears were pinned in aggression, rather angry that someone would want to destroy her precious basket! Afterall, she intended to keep her basket forever as a memento of sorts to the start of her life and the celebratory welcoming of her presence within her rather large family. W-What do you think---Oh!

Thin ears pricked with surprise to find herself muzzle to muzzle with another foal, blinking jade gaze at the colt with a gentle cant of her head.

The little colt hadn't expected the basket to make a noise, much less move! Though startled, Althalus wasn't a jumpy sort and instead froze, as if he'd been caught red handed! Lips still locked on the edge of the basket, he heard the basket 'protest' his nibbles! SCARY! This wasn't some sort of animal - it couldn't be - so how on earth could it talk?

Suddenly, the brown lid of the basket was snatched out of his mouth as it was thrown off, and lo and behold, there was curled a brown and black filly! They were nose to nose, and Althalus could only gape, for a moment breathless by the event. Never would he have expected to find one hiding in 'it'. . . whatever it was!

But this could be a good thing, wasn't it? A new friend, so long as she wasn't too irked that he was eating her basket. Jade eyes met silver and for a long moment he just stared, getting a good look of the little filly before him. She had a white nose and face, but was predominantly brown. Little black bits dotted her in random patterns, and it was all set off by two bright, jade coloured eyes.

Hardly taken aback by the close proximity, Althalus finally regained control over his voice. Eyes lighting, he grinned down at the filly, tail swishing happily behind him. The little sunshine boy chuckled, pawing at the ground in his good humor. "What were you doing in there!?" He giggled, nostrils flaring as he tried to fathom why she was hiding. "Are ya hidin' from someone? Or do you live here?"

Did some soquili only live in brown and black things like this one? Were there others he could find and wake up, others out there he could bother? Or was this little stranger unique in such a discovery? Either way, Althalus was greatly amused and very pleased. "I din' mean to eat it - I thought it was just some sort of strange plant!"

Now of all the things to expect, Caelyndei certainly hadn't expected him. Bright, bold eyes softened as the shape of another foal took focus before her face once she'd drawn back to a comfortable distance. The inverse paint filly wasn't accustomed to speaking so harshly with others, but she had only been defending her basket. Still, Caely felt somewhat bashful now, her neck craning as she shrank backwards ears flicking against her head shyly. Luckily, the stranger seemed to be pleasantly natured and hadn't taken her irritated comments to heart.

Instead he laughed at her! Looking rather crestfallen the tiny filly flushed beneath her bay coat, sinking deeper into the security of her wearing basket sullenly. I was... I was playing.

Soft voice murmured though her explanation was muffled as she tucked her chin into her chest. I was... going to.... surprise that bunny.

Why was it that the more she spoke the more pathetic she sounded. Spook a bunny? What was she an infant? It really was a ridiculous game when she thought about it, even if it was one of the most amusing ones she played while alone. Falling silent as her voice evaporated with the growing sense of despair Athalus' apologies might as well have fallen upon deaf ears for all the good it might have done Caely at the moment. It.. it's okay, you can... if you want.

Slight frame was already removing herself from the wicker basket which looked miraculously similar to the young filly in coloration, wiggling with some effort to shake the rounded object from her hind quarters.

The mischievous look Althalus had been wearing quickly settled as he heard the brown and golden haired girls quiet response. Her crestfallen features hadn't gone unnoticed, and suddenly the orange one realized his err. Well. . . almost. He didn't know what he had said that had caused her to respond so negatively, and a sudden panic struck his heart!

Oh no! Gasping slightly, silver eyes widened as he stared up at her, and his ears flattened against his head. Not in irritation or annoyance with her, but at himself! ARGH - he was such a plank! He hadn't meant to upset the girl, but he didn't realize that the basket (which did mimic her markings quite well) had been so important to her.

It took him a moment to realize that the bunny he had scared away had, apparantly, been her toy! Oh jeeze - no wonder she was so upset with him! What he had hoped was to be a new friend, one just as playful as Aiolos and Porsche, had not transformed in to something more. . . .worrisome. Not only had he tried to eat the basket-thingy that she treasured, but he had scared away her bunny friend AND had upset her by talking!

. . . . way. to. go.

"Oh! No - no, no, no! I uh. . . I din' mean to eat it - I just din' know what it was! I thought it was some plant or sumthin'. . . . I din know it was yours! Please," he half begged, dipping his head in the most submissive of gestures, "Dun' be upset! I din' mean to scare away your bunny either, I jus' din' know that you were playing! I. . . I'm sorry, really!"

The orange stallion stretched out his neck to give the brown one a little, reassuring nuzzle as he would his sister, until he realized that that might probably terrify her away even more. Confused on what he should do - should he stay? Should he go? Althalus retreated a few steps, head falling closer to the ground as he tried to find a way to cheer up the little girl.

Upset girls were never a fun thing to have around! What was even worse, he became a complete fumbling idiot when they put on the water works. He hated to see people cry, and though the little femme hadn't started yet, something told Althalus that if he didn't fix this situation soon it could become a heck of a lot worse! "You can bite my tail if you want," he suggested, swishing his little dark orange-red bit back and forth. "Cause I bit your basket," hoping that might interest the little brown filly.

He would be agreeable with that - his siblings pulled and yanked on it all the time, what would it matter if a stranger did too? Besides, it was only right. He'd chewed on her favored toy-thing, so why shouldn't he get a bite in return?

It would only serve him right!

In mid stride Caelynei nearly fell over in her skittery attempt to travel sideways from the golden colt as he came up beside her. From the outside her horrified expression and nervous shuffle seemed more an attempt to get away from the creature that was plaguing her. In truth the young filly thought herself the plague, her small shoulders quivering as she turned to face him, scrawny legs buckling as she dropped to her knees. Her narrow face tucked into the snow, causing the flakes to gather against her fur and hide the thin racing stripe that cut down the center of her face.

Soft little ears quivered as they flattened against her poll, tail curled between her legs. She was a peculiar little filly and her family often wondered where the dominating trait of her desire to please came from as it seemed to make her unnervingly gullible and unnaturally agreeable towards others. P-Please take my basket! I-I didn't mean to yell! I was.. that is.. you sca--

She'd begun to speak over him, eyes tightly shut, forelock pooling against the snow which was beginning to sting her face with its biting cold, but as she spoke the colt's warm voice grabbed at her attention and made her quailing apologies fall still. Looking rather ridiculous as brow audits perked attentively eventually lifting her snow splattered face within which sat uncertain hues, green like the grass that sprung in the meadows during the warmth of spring. Bite his tail? Was he crazy? Why the heck would she have done that? An avid believer in the 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you' theory, such an offer made Caely shrink reluctantly. I-I couldn't... couldn't do that. It would hurt...

Relaxing a little, body posture eased ever so slightly though she had yet to pick herself up off her knees, shivering a little against the chill which radiated from the glorified slush. Hesitant little tail caved to brisk, sweeping swishes against her hindquarters shyly, unable to deny her eager-to-please nature. It seemed, though the pair had started off on the wrong hoof, that neither of their intentions were hostile and maybe--with some coaxing and a little sweet talk--they could forget this bizarre initial introduction and start over. Maybe?

Althalus was awfully troubled by Caelynei's reaction to him, and the poor colt hadn't a clue what to do or say. The earth kissed filly was skittish to the extreme, and the poor sunset colt didn't know whether that was the way she naturally acted or if he just seemed to scare her. Honest, he hadn't meant to intimidate the small one! He had merely thought her basket was some sort of freak plant that might be good to nibble on. . . .

An honest mistake, really. He couldn't be the only foal in existence that, on more than one occasion, thought only with his stomach. As the small one quivered, facing him, Althalus' ears pinned back against his head and refused to budge. Retreating another half step, the little orange one continued his frantic babble, hoping upon hope that maybe he would say something right instead of being so wrong! It wasn't right that he made her nervous or so afraid - dratted all! This meeting wasn't going right at all and no matter how hard he tried, it seemed things weren't changing for the better.

"No no - I - I din' mean to scare, honest! I promise I'm not scary, really. And, and, and I dun' want your basket!" Logic kicked him in the brain and told him that too could be considered insulting and mean, especially since she was offering. "Well, er - I mean - it's an awfully NICE basket, and I'd take as best care of it as I could! I wouldn't eat it or anything, promise. But I'd much rather you keep it, since you love it so and I - I wouldn't know what to do with it. Please." He half begged, silver eyes staring imploringly up at the small, honey-haired filly.

Tail still wagging hypnotically behind him, Althalus peered up at Cael as she further shrunk away. Ohhhh - now he was only frightening her further! The red-maned boy glanced over his shoulder, peering at the little fluff bit that wriggled back and forth behind him. He almost wanted to blame his tail for all of this. . . . "No, no - it wouldn't hurt - honest! I mean, I bit your basket. . . t'would only be fair, wouldn't it?"

Althalus heaved a heavy sigh, shoulders drooping close to defeat. "I'm sorry - honest I am! I should've known better than to have nibbled on something that wasn't mine, and I really should've walked softer instead of scaring away all the rabbits." Honestly, this crazy introduction had gone sour because of him and now the little sunset colt found himself caught between a rock and hard place. He wanted to stay and better get to know the brown furred girl, but she didn't seem to like him very much at the moment - but if he left, he'd never get a chance to make amends and a new friend.

No matter what he chose to do, the little filly was only going to further be upset and afraid.

"I'm sorry - really, truly I am! Please, don't be upset or. . or afraid. I won't nibble anymore - I'll be good and on my best behavior, really! Honest I will!"

If that couldn't get her to feel better, Althalus was plum out of ideas.

Never in all her life--which stated as such sounded far more impressive than it was in actuality--Caely had never met anyone as uncertain and apologetic as she was. Watching the strange colt stammer and stagger over multitudes of apologies and promises she wondered in a vague sort of way if the way he looked to her right now was the way other perceived her. As he searched for the right thing to say jade hues softened trying to understand what it was about her that caused him to react so anxiously. The little paint filly certainly hadn't meant to cause him such distress.

Staring blankly her ears flicked, listening to the colt's scrambled speech as the pieces began to fall together. It was almost as if.. as if he thought, that she though.. that he was an ogre.

Gasping as the light bulb clicked and buzzed to life, Caely rubbed her muzzle on the inside of her forearm as she gathered herself to stand. She hadn't meant to make him feel that way at all! Dropping her ears again guiltily, the short distance between them was hesitantly crossed so that her bony chest pressed into that of her new acquaintance admiring his pelt which resembled the valley horizon at the end of a long day. Craning her ebony dusted neck to brush against his own, she nibbled comfortingly at his withers the way she did to console her sisters when they were disheartened. Gentle voice murmuring into the base of his mane sheepishly. It's oh-oh kay. I'm not.. not afraid.

Althalus blinked as the little one suddenly moved forward, wrapping her neck gingerly around his own in a sort of hug. The back of his neck and shoulders were lightly nibbled upon as she whispered a very soft and hushed assurance. . . .

Thank the great spirits!

The fact that the little brown and honey haired female began to respond to his apologies made everything worthwhile. She said she wasn't afraid which was the most important thing - she had seemed so skiddish and afraid at first Althalus was fearful he'd ruined any chances he might have had at becoming her friend! Somehow the little one wondered how they had even gotten in to such a predicament - first the strange basket had exposed a little foal that had been nothing short of livid! And yet now, moments later, she had transformed in to someone shy and a hair skiddish.

Craziness!

Despite it all, the little sunset colt gave a sigh of relief and returned the reassuring gesture as gingerly as he could. She was about the same size as his sister, which made it easy to treat her right - though he was wild and reckless with his brothers and father, little Althalus made sure to do no wrong when it came to the ladies in his life. And Caely was the newest addition!

Silver eyes lighting, he gave a little chuckle, stepping back to nuzzle her affectionately. His little red tail swished back and forth and he smiled brightly up at the little filly - maybe if she wasn't afraid it would be all right. "Well - I . . I'm glad then. I dun want you to be 'fraid of me." Canting his head to the side, he blew a few bangs out of his face before adding, "I'm Althalus - maybe. Maybe we could start this whole meeting thing over?" She could forget about being mad that he bit her basket, and he could forget he scared her so!

Soft foal fur bristled along her spine with delight as she felt Althalus' warm breath and soft muzzle on her own withers, wickering quietly. She felt a small pang of pride in her chest, glad that in some small way her social faux pas had been blurred and possibly even rectified by her current actions. She only ever wanted to be everything everyone wanted her to be. So to feel the unfamiliar colt sigh--with what sounded like relief--was a breath of life to this floundering encounter.

Releasing flaming red mane to allow her companion to draw back, her gaze drew immediately to the reflective silver gaze set in his small face. Struck dumb by their illuminous glow, Caely stared blankly for a moment wondering why they hadn't quite stood out to her before that point in time. Catching herself in mid-gawk, a sheepish look was averted towards the ground temporarily to gather her wits. Feeling him nuzzle into her the little paint's eyes returned once more, wriggling at the large smile upon his face. He seemed so happy now. At least she had managed to do something right! He was already introducing himself by the time she caught up with the conversation.

Althalus.

Caely took to it immediately, repeating his name once unhurriedly in her mind to be sure to prounce it correctly. It was a strong name with a lot of character, just like the colt, but ebony dusted filly only knew that whatever it was about his name that appealed to her, it suited him. Flicking her two-tone tail giddily, teacup hooves danced in place excitedly, though she slipped gracelessly in a small patch of ice and nearly toppled over. She managed to recover though without totally losing her balance, if not in a completely awkward manner, her cheeks coloring bashfully as jade hues stared at the snow beneath their tiny hooves. I.. I would real-really like that. My name is Caelyn-lyndei.

Hesitating for a moment she seemed to shrink as she apologized timidly, ears lowering against her head, I.. I didn't mean to yell at you. I didn't know.. I thought you were a forest animal. I wouldn't have minded so much if I'd known.. that.. that you were so nice.

The little colt couldn't be more excited. Though this meeting had started off on a rough patch, it seemed both of them were able to push past without any residual side effects. Perhaps, down the road should their friendship last, they could poke fun at such an awkward moment. It did amaze Althalus that such a seemingly sweet and almost intimidated filly could have been so quick to yell and defend her basket! It just went to show, he added, that things weren't always as they seemed. Caely held spunk and there was more to her than just a shy, honey-maned girl in front of him. . .

And that made him happy.

At the brown and black girls excitement, his own tail swished happily behind him and it took all his power to leap up and down in place. It was official then - they could be friends! The very best of friends and neither would have to worry about their awkward beginnings. "Ooops! Careful!" He blurted, half-dodging forward to offer his neck for support should she take a topple again. "It's awfully slippery sometimes," he chattered, silver eyes bright. "I've fallen lots and lots."

And it was true. Climbing up snow hills and pushing his way up through the mountains to return home often caused him to end up with bruises a plenty. Today would be no exception, he was sure, even if for now his time was preoccupied with his new friend. Caelyndei - Caelyndei, Caelyndei, Caelyndei. The little colt did his best to commit her name to memory, it being one of the longer ones he'd met in his short lifetime.

Still, it was awfully pretty but, so far he'd seen, girls seemed to always be pretty. There was Nituna with her purple and gold and white, and then Porsche with her rainbow wings, and now there was Caelyndei and her honey hair and spotted coat! Aiolos wasn't so much pretty, he understood, as just amazingly fast and made up of night. . . . And even himself, he couldn't ever be called pretty, despite looking like he walked out of a sunset.

Girls were lucky in that sense, and Caely was no exception! Even his mother and sister were the most beautiful in his family, but that was just a general rule - or so he was fast discovering. Unlike some colts his age, he had never been struck with the girls-have-cooties sort of bug. No, the vast majority of his friends were female, and after being around his brothers it was no surprise he found girls just as fun, if not more so, than boys.

Except, of course, when it came to Aiolos. The Double A Duo would forever be unstoppable, and no one would ever be able to compete for such a rank. Thankfully though, there was no limit to friendships so Althalus knew he needn't worry or be concerned with making new ones. The more the merrier!

"Well then, Caelyndei," he spoke her name carefully so as not to completely slaughter it, the red haired colt gave a broad grin. "You needn't worry 'bout yelling! In fact, I'm kind of glad you did," he added, eyes dancing with delight. "Cause if you hadn't we'd have never met!" Logically that wasn't necessarily true, but if she had just hid within her basket he would have fast left and been on his way. And what sort of horrible fate would that be? "But please - you don't have to be sorry. We're friends now, and that's all that matters! So . . . so do you wanna play or . . or something?"

He tilted his head inquisitively, curious as to see what she might want to do. He surely liked games, but he was just as happy to talk too. Even if his legs were anxious to run and move.
