Personally I have no problem with secondhand. It reduces the waste of it all and your not supporting the killers with your $. Instead your supporting a thrift store with a good cause and keeping yourself warm. Also would you wear something non veg you already own or have been given. Say someone you know gives you a gift that they believe to be non leather but it turns out it is, do you waste it?

So what are your opinions?

I have non-vegan clothes I'm phasing out of my wardrobe, but I'll NEVER get anything new (or new to me). If somebody tries to give me a non-vegan present, I politely explain my moral opposition but thank them profusely for the thought. I just had to do that with some pearl earrings my mother bought me about a month ago.

Agreed.

Another positive. If its second hand, I can't see any reason I shouldn't have it because its got to be better than consuming more goods needlessly.

So if somebody was throwing out a pack of hot dogs, would you eat them? I can't see how accepting animal products is okay. It's a tacit acceptance of the system.

I don't consume meat under the principle that even non-purchased meat is funding the demand for more meat (since someone else will buy it for me). However, leather is different in that is lasts often for decades, so whether it get thrown in a landfill or used second hand, it remains potentially useful.

Morally, its still not ok to strip an animal of its skin (alive, if the internets tell the truth) for the sake of something to wear. However that's a moral dilemma for the individual vegan, sincw unlike meat you're not directly funding it.

From a prespective apart from veganism, I'd rather an individual was using leather second hand than paying for a first hand sweat-shop produced coat or pair of boots. This might not apply to all vegans.

Meat remains potentially useful, too. It's shorter shelf life doesn't change that. And if using second-hand meat is creating demand (it isn't), how is second-hand leather not? Either way, you are at best preventing waste. At worst, you are telling other people that both practices are okay.

I disagree. Meat is useful for a much shorter period of time, so the supply has to be refreshed constantly.

It is. Someone has to purchase it, unless you're hunting it yourself.

Once its past its first user and the first user has discarded it, its no different than leaving it there.

Wearing fake leather (pleather and such) gives the impression that leather is ok, unless the person veiwing it knows its fake. Same for fake fur. Same for fake meat if the person watching you isn't away its fake.

I fail to see how "second-hand" (sounds so funny in this context) meat creates demand. If your friend says to you "I'm going out of town this weekend, but I've got this hamburger in my fridge. I don't have room in my freezer, so do you want it?", taking it and eating it creates no extra demand. That doesn't make it right, though.

If you're really concerned about the waste, give it to a friend or a needy person or a thrift store. Wearing it doesn't do your ethics any favors.

Ok, I'm not vegan but I don't like the idea of wearing dead animals...still, my mom's aunt bought me this really nice blue suede jacket from a recycling center and hell yes I wear it. It's made in Finland, it's really good quality and it's second-hand, plus the money goes for a good cause. The place employes local unemployed people and they make new out of old. I bought this really nice denim bag that was made from an old jacket. If it's not fresh I don't see a problem. I mean it's better to keep using the old one if it's still good, than throw it away and make more.

I swear I'm not. All I mean by that is that moral right is not determined by majority rule.

I am a vegan mostly due to disliking the taste of meat and due to being lactose intolerant. I know some people may think this sounds awful, but I'm not vegan for the animals. I like animals, I respect them and I believe the vegetarian/vegan diet is easier on the earth, but I am not on a plight to save the animals.

Having said that, you know where I'm coming from (albeit, if you disagree, fine, I don't really care).

I have no problem with recycling and reusing wool.

I don't like leather though, particularly leather jackets. Wearing some animal's old skin is really creepy.

I don't like fur either.
