The world was a scary place, she had always known that inside her mind. But recently the world seemed less scary than usual. Perhaps through the influence of less scary Kitsu the world seemed a little less dark than she originally thought. Or maybe because it was softly snowing outdoors that made her feel a little more at ease. When it snowed, the world seems peaceful, as if asleep. That meant no disturbance, surely.
Her soft paws pressed against the cool, fluffy substance as she made her way towards the HQ. Sharded wings were tucked as neatly as possible next to her sides. With all that white on the ground, she blended in much more easily than in the warmer temperatures. Greens and browns did not help her blend in at all.
Pearl's head poked inside the HQ, her long ears twitched for any sounds of anyone inside. No signs of anyone. Safe for now. But no signs of anyone also meant Darkside wasn't there. With him around she felt much safer. Not that there should be anything to worry about inside these quarters, right? From what she heard it's typically a fairly calm place, open and inviting to anyone and everyone. Kitsu with ill-will wouldn't cause trouble here, right? At least that's what she hoped for. For now she'd have to brave staying there alone temporarily.

The floor seemed to groan underneath his weight as the massive nightmare lurched throughout the HQ. It had not been the warmth that brought him here, but the prospect that his current targets would have thought to keep themselves out of the cold. Bloodied talons splayed themselves roughly as the Tyrant Nemesis slowly twisted himself around in the small room, leather restraints creaking as he stepped into the hallway once more. A milky eye roamed in the crater of his skull, restlessly searching for prey that was not here. No hair hindered its endless pacing, having been removed and the roots burned long ago.
He loomed silently for a moment, arching his thick neck when his mutated jaws cracked open to catch a strange, strong new scent. A forked tongue teased at his canines for a moment before it slipped back within its serrated cage, and the bioweapon cocked his head slowly to the side. He could see her now; a pale, slender thing with strange, fragmented appendages and a pointed spine protruding from her brow. Curious. Yet, he was uninterested. With the cold weather, his prey would undoubtedly slow, perhaps even stop for a few, precious hours. He could not afford to waste them on investigating, tempting as this peal, pearly figure might have been.
Thickened bands of muscle on his back swayed back and forth, and tentacles pulsed wetly on his protruding shoulder while the beast emitted a low, undulating rumble deep in his chest. It would be her first and only warning. The creature shifted forward once more, the sickly sweet smell of decay that clung to his bulky frame growing stronger and stronger.

The first and most obvious sign was the smell of decay lurking closer and closer. It was rather unbarable, but it sparked a bit of interest within her still. What was that smell coming from? She had never caught a scent like this, not even when seafood was brought home. It smelled like a mixture of decaying seafood with bodily wastes. A strong scent that would put almost anyone off. But the curiosity was rather overwhelming. She wanted to know more and just for today she felt just brave enough to head towards the smell.
Even though she could feel the tremors were fairly strong, she inhaled deeply and continued her way towards the giant creature. With her poor eye sight, she couldn't see the digusting tentacles protruding from his shoulder. At best she could make out his general form, with very little details. Even if she could hear it, she didn't know what they were. If she didn't know, how would she know they could prove dangerous? She was very innocent, like that of a child's who first discovered the sockets in the walls.

The mechanical bits interlocked with the still-organic flesh of his mind whirled quietly at the creature's undaunted approach; he detected no aggression in her moevments, but he had never been one to tolerate close contact save for battle. An analysis was quickly cast upon her, calculating her density and forming the conclusion that her matter was composed of some sort of stone. For a living creature, such a thing should be impossible, yet there was no denying the evidence that continued to slink towards him. Her movements, he noted, were not hindered, and it was likely she could cause some damage with those jagged wings or sharpened horn.
At once, no matter how mild, the unfortunate female was sorted into the 'threat' category.
With a bass-like drone that made his entire body quiver, the Nightmare allowed his jaws to wordlessly clench. She drew closer, and he swayed for a moment, the thick, oozing appendages on his back beginning to twitch as though debating whether to snatch her up or not. Instead, a massive foot stirred and lifted itself, twisting sharply as it shot forward to try and smash her straight in the side of the head. If the blow connected, his bloodied claws would rake savagely at her skin, seeking to wound and even infect her, should the opportunity present itself.

Pearl was an animal no matter how anyone looked at her. She carried animal instincts just like any other Kitsu, though hers were slightly skewed compared to others. Even though under normal circumstances she wouldn't find herself in such a predicament, she did. Of course, under normal circumstances why would a Nightmare dwell within these peaceful quarters? Her overwhelming curiosity of that Nightmare drew her closer to him, and as a result placed her in this predicament.
When the massive paw with claws swung her way, she attempted to dodge with her small body. Key word being try. As fast as her body could react, the difference in distance was still great. His paw was at least twice the size of her face, there would at least be a small scratch here and there. She could only brace for impact now and await the pain.

He felt his hardened talons bite straight through hair and flesh, but the monster only felt a roiling irritation that stirred in his chest as a low, hungry growl. He had not anticipated for her to move, and her small, diminutive stature had been more than enough to put her out of fatility's path. With his instincts now triggered, the Nemesis was determined to hunt and destroy this impudent creature; if it lacked the intelligent to stay out of the way of predatorial beasts, then it did not deserve to survive.
"Hrrraaaaannnghhh..." The bass-like thrum was more than enough to make the Tyrant's entire body quiver, and the sound pulsed deep into the creaking floorboards of the cabin. He rolled his shoulders, and the sleek, slick appendages on his back extended downward to swipe at her, thick and heavy like clubs. If he could manage it, he'd even try to snatch her with one of them to better savage her, all the while advancing with slow, thudding steps.

It was probably a good thing she was mute, or else her screams would just encourage the raging beast a few steps away. He would probably enjoy her suffering more so than anyone else within proximity. Of all times she had to be alone, she had to be alone with a monster. Just her luck, too. No one around to call for help, or attempt to save her from this monstrosity. And no knight in shinning armor was going to save her, or else he would've appeared long before this all happened.
As the pain burned through her skin, her face winced instinctively as a reaction to the burning sensation she now felt. Bits of fur laid on the ground as crimson blood trickled out of her skin. Her once soft pinkish white fur was tainted with a dark crimson substance. It smelled of rust or some sort of metallic object, and the scent made her sick to her stomach.
She realized her mistake of approaching such a gigantic, menacing beast. Looks can be deceiving, but with Nemesis is was plainly obvious he would pose more than just a small threat to little Pearl. For the first time, she truly regretted her actions. There's a lesson to be learned in every story, but this was not the lesson she wanted to learn. More than anything in the world, she wanted to be home. Safe within the comforts of those who would go out of their way to protect her. But such a wish cannot be granted right now. All she can wish for is to make it back home...alive and live to see another day.
Despite her wounded state and small stature, a wounded animal was one with the highest survival instincts. She wanted to live. There was no time for another thought, everything was now purely instincts.
Recovering as fast as she could manage, she tried with all her might to leap out of the way. Though with her injuries and from the shock alone, she could probably only dodge two of those appendages at best. Still, she had to try. If they caught hold of her...she would probably try to fight it as best as she could manage. Clawing, biting, etc. Anything goes.

The Nemesis understood little of suffering or guilt. To torment and torture was simply not built within his nature; he had been designed as a ruthless killing machine that got the job done as quickly as possible. The trembling creature's death meant very little to the beast, and would give him nothing more than the briefest sensation of satisfaction in knowing that he had emerged triumphant. Should she scuttle beyond his range, he would feel no longing to pursue her. She was not his current mission. The iron taint of fresh blood practically coated his tongue, and the Nightmare roared low and loud as his tentacles tore through the wooden flooring of the cabin, snatching for the pale, fleeting form of the female.
Wordlessly he pivoted to better track her movements, keenly aware that the exit was now fully unguarded. It would be a simple thing for him to leave...but the beast lingered. Would she approach and again risk her life for some unknown purpose? She had no place to run in this cabin, for he had searched it thoroughly in the brief span of time he'd spent here. It would be easy to pin her up against a wall and crush her skull to ensue that all brain function would completely shut down.
"S.T.A.R.S...." Came the droning grumble as he reminded himself of his mission. They were his targets, not she. To remain here and preoccupy himself only meant that they were potentially dragging themselves even farther out of range. He had been unable to pick up their trail, so what good would his wasting time here do? Surely the feel of her body crushing itself underneath his claws would do wonders to relieve his frustration...and that was why the Nemesis waited, torn between duty and savage instinct, to appraise the female and judge her next move.

Her eyes were wide opening as they saw the blurry shadows of appendages move through the floorboards. Long ears twitched as the sounds echoed in her ears. This didn't look too good for little Pearl. Even though the exists were unblocked, she doubted she could run fast enough to get through before his massive form blocked her way. If she did run through, it wasn't as if she would be completely save from his reach, though. She was almost sure he would most likely go after her. There wasn't anything else around to distract him otherwise. It seemed like an instinctive reaction to do--going after injured animals.
She was always fairly good at hiding, but only because her pursuers would soon give up after she was hidden. There wasn't much inside to hide behind or under. Only chairs and tables were around, and the gigantic monster could tear through that just as easily as he did with those floorboards. She was practically cornered with no place to hide and no line of defense. If only she had the means of defending herself...
Despite her less than optimistic outlook on this situation, she had to try something. Anything! If he blocked the entrance, well, that would be the end of it, probably. The chances were slim to none, but she still had to try something. It was a lot better than standing here getting mauled by tentacles.
With that, her little legs kicked off the ground as she made her way towards the entrance. Hopefully luck was on her side today...

Sure enough, the pale creature unexpectedly paused in her antics to twist slender body around, racing brazenly back towards him as though to attempt escape. A simple lurch forward allowed his thick frame to serve as a barricade, awkwardly shifting backwards to squeeze his flanks through the door frame. She wouldn't be able to get past him unless she could dart through her legs, or somehow find the height to soar over his broad back.
Thick claws dug into the ground as the bioweapon braced himself, grating his thick jaws together even as she shot towards him. When she'd darted close enough for him to feel the heat of her body, detect churning muscle under deceptively gleaming skin, the monster lashed out with thickened tentacle and forelimb alike to smash the female up against the wall. He would stun her if he could, knock her until she was senseless and feeble before terminating her lifesigns in a quick and brutal fashion.
Despite his unwavering ruthlessness, the Nightmare was inwardly confused. She had foolishly chosen to rush him, as though her brazen display would intimidate him or force him to back off. It had only served to place herself right in the jaws of the lion. The Nightmare rumbled low in his throat, letting the sound pulse on and on in unbreaking strands even as he readied himself for the kill.

Pearl wasn't trying to act brave in the least. She just wanted to leave this place, though she should have expected the giant monstrosity to block her way out. The little gem was never one for brave acts. What possessed her to approach the Nightmare was beyond even her now. She should have guessed even in this peaceful place not everyone was so willing to befriend her. Poor dear.
As she saw and heard the giant tentacle and a giant limb shooting towards her, she knew dodging all of it would be practically impossible at this point. She ducked low and raised her paws against her head, bracing for the damage. The paws would absorb some of the shock to her head, as she relaxed the rest of the body. Resisting whatever aftershock would only prove futile. May as well go along with it for the least damage possible.
From the looks of it now, it would be some Christmas miracle if she made out of this alive. If she did, her perception of others would be even less attractive than before. There was no way she was coming back here for a while, if she even decided to leave the safety of home.

If time had suddenly decided to slow itself, the assault almost looked decidedly gentle. His thickened claws effortlessly pushed themselves underneath her body and scooped her up, allowing her to sail through the air until the cabin wall rudely interrupted her effortless flight. His paw, however, did not slow; it crushed itself into her side with enough force that the seasoned wood of the walls groaned. Only then did he allow her to drop, a deep-sated note of contentment growling in his chest. Tentacles snaked forth from the thick leather of his sleeves to wrap around her slender limbs before he'd hauled her into the air. She would be hauled close to his mutated jaws, hot, fetid breath rasping across the hardened features of her delicate face before the monster roared with brutal sound.
He would throw her then, having so rightly proclaimed his superiority, watched as her body sailed away from him in an unbroken arc. Whether she could catch herself and avoid damage was simply a matter of how badly his first blow had stunned her, as the beast had no intention of watching anymore. Slowly, the creature of monstrous proportions made to back from the cabin, booted feet crunching deep within the snow before he could properly twist himself.
Satisfaction coursed through his entire being as the Nightmare drew further and further away from the scene, the ghostly creature already banished from his thoughts as he focused on the task at hand. This had been a pleasant distraction, but his mission was still of utmost priority. The Tyrant droned low in his throat, announcing the name of the team whose utter annihilation was currently his sole reason for existence. He would find them. The actions he had taken upon that small, insignificant being from before would seem a blessing in comparison to what he would do to them.
